My Husband Put Another Woman in My Place in the Biggest Contract of Our Lives, but One Question Erased His Smile

On the day my husband handed the management of our company to his mistress, I stood behind the glass door and looked at my mother’s stolen bracelet on her wrist.

It was Mexico City, the twenty-ninth floor of a corporate tower on Insurgentes Avenue. It was nearing ten in the morning. The air conditioner hummed as if wind were trapped inside the walls, while the sound of my heels on the gleaming floor became clearer with every step.

In the glass conference room Roberto stood holding a glass of water.

“Today’s agreement begins a new era for our group,” he was saying. “I want to introduce to you the woman who will lead this project together with me.”

Then he pointed toward a woman dressed in a red dress.

“Sofia Martinez.”

Several executives applauded politely. Sofia, however, put her arm around Roberto’s, as if she were already the winner.

Then the light fell on her wrist.

Small diamonds flashed.

My mother’s bracelet.

A month earlier it had disappeared from my bedroom drawer. I searched through the entire room. Roberto stood by the door, listened to me calmly, and finally told me:

“Maybe you yourself put it somewhere else, Elena.”

Now that bracelet was on his mistress’s hand.

My heart did not speed up. On the contrary, such cold settled inside me that my own breathing seemed like that of a stranger. Anger had already become a processed fact. At that moment I understood only one thing: Roberto was certain that I would always remain silent.

We had been married for twelve years. When we met each other, we had a small trading firm and ate roadside tacos after contracts. Roberto was extraordinarily good at speaking with people. I managed the numbers, debts, banks, and the decisions about which newspapers never wrote.

His face was visible outside.

My hands held everything from the inside.

I saved our lands when the bank threatened to seize them. I changed the structure of the debts, returned loss-making divisions to profit, and wrote into the contract conditions that Roberto always called “insignificant technical details.”

In recent months, however, I smelled unfamiliar perfume on his clothes, saw a second number on his phone, and heard about strange weekend meetings.

But the betrayal was not only a personal matter. Thousands of families depended on our company’s salaries. Therefore, first I had to understand what Roberto had done and how far he had gone.

Today’s deal amounted to hundreds of millions of pesos. It included agricultural lands, processing plants, transport, loans, and guarantees. One wrong signature, and everything I had preserved for years would end up in the hands of strangers.

Sofia whispered something to Roberto. He smiled and touched her wrist. The bracelet flashed again.

At that moment the heavy door opened.

A young assistant came out into the corridor with folders. Behind him stood eighty-one-year-old Fernando Velasco—the founder of an investment group, a man before whom even the proudest managers lowered their voices.

Roberto approached him.

“Don Fernando, there is no need to dwell on technical points. As I explained, Sofia and I will control all the conditions…”

Fernando stopped.

His gaze moved from Roberto to me.

For several seconds no one moved. Then the old man straightened his shoulders, passed by Roberto’s extended hand, and walked straight toward me.

“Good morning, general director,” he said.

The color disappeared from Roberto’s face.

“I have been waiting for you all morning. Please come in.”

Sofia stood up, but did not take her hand off the chair. It was my place.

I entered the room and put my bag on the table.

“You were sitting in my chair,” I told Sofia.

She stepped back without a word.

Roberto laughed awkwardly.

“Elena, what a surprise. My wife has always participated only in internal administrative matters.”

Those words hurt more than the admission of his betrayal.

I opened the folder.

“Continue, Roberto. Explain to everyone who is supposed to manage my company.”

His face hardened.

“This is an attempt to disrupt the meeting.”

The corporate lawyer cleared his throat.

“Mr. Navarro, before we sign, we must verify the conditions of authority.”

“What conditions of authority?” Roberto asked.

It was precisely then that I realized he had not read them at all.

I opened page forty-seven. The rustle of papers sounded in the room. Roberto glanced over the text and suddenly stopped.

His jaw tightened.

“It was not supposed to be this way,” he said.

I looked at him calmly.

“Then, Roberto, now for the first time you will learn whose company this really was…”

Don Fernando looked at Roberto.

“This deal is based on the assets protected by Mrs. Navarro and the financial model created by her.”

“I built this company!” Roberto shouted.

“We built it,” I told him.

Years ago my lands saved his business, burdened with his debts. In return, the controlling voting right remained with me. He knew this until he connected success with his own name.

“Elena, don’t do this,” he told me quietly.

I looked at Sofia. She was still wearing my mother’s bracelet.

“You brought her here and told everyone that she managed the company together with me. Now you have an audience.”

Sofia asked:

“Roberto told me that he controlled everything.”

“The person who controls a company reads the contract,” I answered.

Roberto slammed the folder onto the table.

!!!  On my birthday, my mother-in-law told my child that I was a liar, then my husband swung his hand and the guests fell silent

“We will not sign.”

“We will.”

“You won’t be able to do it without me.”

“You’re right. But neither will you be able to do it without me.”

Then I opened a second folder. It was a decision for temporary suspension that the board had prepared because of illegal expenses.

Roberto turned pale.

“I will not allow this.”

“The board can.”

He pointed toward the bracelet.

“Is this your evidence too?”

“No,” I said. “This is only the beginning.”

Sofia opened the clasp and put the bracelet on the table. Roberto walked toward the door.

“This is not over.”

“I know.”

The next morning the financial director placed new documents on my desk and told me:

“Mrs. Navarro, what is written here is no longer betrayal connected with your husband. It is a crime…”

The voice of the financial director, Miguel, was so quiet that I heard the rustle of the wind by the office windows more clearly.

“What does ‘it is a crime’ mean?” I asked.

Miguel opened a black folder. There was a small ink stain on his finger, as if he had checked the documents by hand all night.

“During the last eight months, money moved from the company into three secret accounts. The sums were distributed as if for consulting services, but the recipient companies were registered by people connected with Sofia’s name.”

I sat down in the chair.

“How much?”

“Forty-two million pesos. And that is only what has been confirmed.”

That same evening, in the legal office of the Navarro Group, I gathered all the directors. My mother’s bracelet lay on the table. I could not wear it, but I could not take my eyes off it. The small diamonds shone coldly in the lamp light.

Roberto arrived late. Sofia stood behind him, although she was no longer wearing the red dress. Fatigue could be seen on both their faces.

“Is this an interrogation?” Roberto asked.

“No,” I said. “This is the moment when you will answer why the company’s money was going into companies created by your mistress.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You told me that all of this was happening legally.”

“Be quiet, Sofia.”

“No, now you will be quiet,” she said, and for the first time removed her hand from his arm.

Miguel displayed the bank transfers on the screen. The dates matched Roberto’s trips abroad exactly. Part of the money had been transferred to hotels, expensive apartments, and secret accounts.

“You cannot prove this,” Roberto said.

Our corporate lawyer, Raul, placed a memory card on the table.

“The camera recordings and electronic correspondence have already been certified.”

Roberto’s face changed.

“Cameras?”

!!!  Mi madre apartó las patatas de las manos de mi hijo y, cuando respondí con calma, su sonrisa desapareció

“The warehouse and archive cameras,” Raul said. “They show Sofia taking the bracelet from your wife’s room. They also show her moving documents from your office.”

Sofia stepped back.

“I was only doing what Roberto asked me to do.”

Roberto struck the table with his fist.

“You’re a liar!”

“You told me that Elena checked nothing!” Sofia shouted. “You told me that soon everything would be ours!”

A heavy silence fell over the room.

I looked at Roberto.

“Why?”

For the first time he could not answer me.

“Because I thought you only looked at numbers,” he said at last. “I thought you would never dare to go against me.”

Those words were more devastating than any confession. He had not only betrayed me; he had considered my patience weakness.

Raul handed me another sheet.

“This is an attempt to falsify signing authority. If the deal were concluded today, part of the control would be transferred to the company owned by Sofia.”

Roberto stood up.

“You will all regret this.”

“Perhaps,” I answered. “But you do not yet know who sent these documents.”

At that moment my phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

“Mrs. Navarro?” said a man’s voice. “I am the person who helped your husband create this scheme. And if you want to know where the remaining money disappeared, tomorrow morning you must come alone to the old railway warehouse…”

The call ended.

Roberto suddenly turned pale.

And I realized that the most dangerous enemy had still not entered the room…
