Seven Years After the Divorce, My Ex-Husband Laughed at My Simple Dress, but the Guest Who Entered the Hall Immediately Erased His Smile

That evening my ex-husband approached me as if all the guests in the hall had to see how he humiliated the woman who had once run his life.

It was seven o’clock in the evening in the large hall of the Coastal Officers’ Club. Golden light fell from the crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling onto the white tablecloths, silver cutlery, and the guests’ expensive jewelry. I stood by the window, holding a glass of sparkling water. On my dark blue dress, near the shoulder, I had pinned a small copper compass—an old item belonging to my father, which always reminded me that a direction exists even when the road can no longer be seen.

Richard saw me precisely there.

He was coming with Tiffany. Tiffany could not have been more than twenty-five, clinging to her husband’s arm with one hand, while on the other hand she wore such a large ring that the chandelier light disappeared in its stone.

Richard stopped in front of me and looked me over from head to toe.

“Evelyn, did you really put on this dress?” he smiled. “Or did you join the service staff today?”

Tiffany quietly giggled.

“Richard,” I said calmly, “it is pleasant to see you.”

“Pleasant?” He raised his voice. Two guests standing nearby turned their heads. “Seven years later you still look as if you barely survived. Still simple dresses, still the same shy smile.”

My fingers stuck to the cold glass of the tumbler. That was all I felt. Neither shame nor fear. Rather, an older weariness that I had learned during the fifteen years of being with this man.

Richard’s company received its first major contract when I was arranging every detail in his place. I organized dinners, checked contracts, called partners, calmed employees, and returned home at a time when I no longer even remembered the dreams of my childhood. Then the money came, and Richard decided that his success belonged only to him.

“Look at Tiffany’s ring,” he said, putting an arm around his young wife’s waist. “This is what life looks like when you make the right decision.”

“Perhaps for you that truly was the right one,” I answered.

His smile disappeared for a moment.

“I did not expect such an answer from you. Though, what can you expect from a woman who, besides a small studio, had nothing left after the divorce?”

Then Tiffany looked directly at me for the first time.

“Do you really live alone?” she asked me.

“I am no longer alone.”

These words came out of me by themselves. Richard, however, understood them as he wanted—as if they were an awkward attempt by a desperate woman.

!!!  Soțul meu și-a așezat amanta pe scaunul din față, iar eu am coborât din mașină cu un dosar care putea să-i distrugă întreaga viață

“You are still the same,” he muttered. “Leaving you was the easiest decision I have ever made.”

Nearby, someone put a fork down on a plate. The small, sharp sound seemed to divide the conversation in two.

And I only touched the compass.

Seven years earlier, after the divorce, I truly had nothing. But then I spent nights at my first job, learned what had once been done for Richard, and built a career in my own name. Now my consulting company was helping manage the National Veterans Foundation’s multimillion-dollar fund. That was why I stood in this hall.

Richard did not know this.

He was about to say something else, but the orchestra slowed its playing. Conversations in the hall quieted. Ceremonial guards stood at the heavy mahogany doors.

Richard immediately straightened his jacket.

“Now watch closely, Evelyn,” he told me. “You will see what people who truly represent something look like.”

He went toward the front row of guests, clearly hoping to be the first to greet the honored guest.

The doors opened.

At first I saw only the shoulders of a white uniform, then the hand of a little girl holding the fingers of a tall man. Richard took one step and extended his hand.

“Admiral Vance, sir, it is a great honor for me. I am Richard Bradley and…”

The man did not even turn toward him. He looked directly toward me, released the girl’s hand, and quickly came across the hall.

Five-year-old Lily’s face immediately lit up.

“Mommy!” she called.

Richard’s outstretched hand remained in the air. The admiral was only a few steps from me, lifted Lily into his arms, and looked toward me.

“Forgive me, my love,” he said, “our daughter wanted to see her mother first…”

Admiral Harrison Vance handed Lily into my arms. The girl wrapped her arms around my neck and buried her face in my hair.

“Mommy, Daddy made me go past my bedtime,” she whispered to me. “He told me that seeing you today was more important.”

Such silence fell over the hall that even the ticking of a clock mechanism could be heard from far away.

Richard’s hand was still extended. All color had left his face. Tiffany first looked at Harrison’s uniform, then at Lily, and finally at me.

Harrison put an arm around my waist and kissed me on the cheek.

“Is everything all right, darling?” he asked me.

“Now it is,” I told him.

Then I looked toward Richard.

“This is Richard. He used to evaluate decisions in my life.”

“Really?” Harrison asked calmly.

Richard barely swallowed.

“Admiral, this is a misunderstanding. I was just…”

“Mr. Vance,” at that moment his chief of staff, Miranda Cole, approached him. She held an electronic folder in her hand. “As you instructed, I checked Bradley’s company’s latest accounts.”

Richard quickly turned his head toward her.

Miranda looked toward me, then said to Richard:

“The matter is much more serious than we initially thought. A conversation with you must take place immediately…”

At Miranda’s last words Richard lost his composure for the first time.

“Not here,” he whispered to her. “This is a business evening.”

“That is exactly why we are here,” Miranda answered. “All the foundation’s principal donors are in this room.”

It was seven forty-five in the evening. Miranda led us into a small reception room nearby. Against the wall stood a wooden console, and on it was a copper candlestick. Lily stood beside Harrison and turned a glass pebble in her hand. I had my hand on her shoulder, but I felt my own heart so strongly that it seemed everyone in the room could hear it too.

Richard closed the door.

“Evelyn, are you involved in all this?” he asked me.

“In what?”

“In this performance arranged against me.”

Harrison looked at him calmly.

“No one is arranging a performance here, Richard. It is simply that this time all the documents ended up in one room.”

Miranda placed the folder on the table and opened the first sheet.

“For the last three years your company has artificially inflated expenses in the foundation’s transportation contracts. The extra money went to two intermediary companies.”

Richard laughed, but there was no sound in the laughter.

“That is absurd.”

“Both intermediaries belong to your brother,” Miranda continued. “And the owner of the third account is your wife.”

Tiffany quickly raised her head.

“Mine? I only signed the account Richard gave me.”

Richard looked at her.

“Now is not the time for this.”

“Now is exactly the time,” I said.

Miranda handed me the second document. On it were the seal of my consulting company and the audit conclusion. My team had been checking all the foundation’s contracts for three months. We discovered not only inflated expenses, but also falsified delivery records: trucks that had never gone out on the road, but whose fees had been paid by the foundation.

Richard looked at the paper and froze.

“You were working on this audit?” he asked me.

“Yes.”

“And you knew all this time?”

“I knew we would find the truth. I did not know it would lead us to your name.”

Harrison placed a small voice recorder on the table.

“This recording was made in the foundation’s procurement office,” he said. “You are telling your employee that no one will notice ‘small changes’ in the accounts.”

Miranda turned on the recorder.

Richard’s voice sounded in the room—confident, mocking, exactly as I remembered it during the seven years.

“If Evelyn were capable of anything even after leaving, she would have stayed with me. She can only do other people’s work. She cannot even understand numbers.”

The recording stopped.

Something collapsed in my chest, but this time it was not pain. It was the last thread that still connected me to his judgment.

Tiffany put a hand on the chair.

“Richard, you told me everything was legal.”

“Be quiet.”

“No, you be quiet now,” she said, stepping back for the first time.

Harrison looked at Miranda.

“Have the lawyers already sent the notification to the investigative service?”

“Yes. And there is one more thing,” Miranda said, looking at her phone. “We have just received a notification that someone from Richard’s company tried to enter the foundation’s archive.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“That is impossible.”

Miranda turned the screen toward me. The message said that the archive camera had recorded one of the employees at two o’clock at night. He was holding my audit folder.

“Who was it?” I asked.

Miranda looked at me for several seconds before answering.

“A person who knew where the original was kept. And he mentioned your name…”
