My Billionaire Employer Invited Me to Humiliate Me on My Birthday, but When I Stepped Out of the Black Car, Her Smile Disappeared

Miranda Sterling stopped clapping immediately when the door of the black sedan opened in front of her mansion and I stepped out of it.

It was eight thirty in the evening. On Chicago’s lakeside road, the wind shook the white flowers, while nearly three hundred wealthy guests stood in front of the Sterlings’ enormous house with champagne glasses. Photographers were taking pictures of every car. They were waiting for famous businessmen, politicians, and actors.

No one was expecting me.

For three years I had cleaned the bathrooms in this house, polished the glass railings, and wiped wine stains from the floor after the guests. My blue work uniform turned me into an invisible person to everyone. Miranda often passed by me as if I were only a moving shadow.

That day she herself gave me a birthday invitation.

“Be sure to come, Valerie,” she told me two weeks earlier, while I was washing the floor in her living room. “Just don’t forget, the party is in evening attire.”

Her friends could not hold back their laughter.

“Is she really planning to come?” one woman asked.

“Of course,” Miranda replied, making her crystal glass sway. “People like that never understand the difference between mockery and an invitation.”

I put the invitation in my bag and said nothing. But that night, after returning to my small apartment, I stared at the cream-colored card for a long time before picking up the phone.

I did not have the number saved.

I knew it by heart.

“I’m listening,” an elderly man answered.

“Grandfather, the time has come.”

There was a long silence on the other side.

“Are you sure, child?”

“I have been preparing for this day for three years.”

“Then everything will begin tomorrow.”

That night I smiled for the first time.

Now, in front of the black car, the driver opened the door all the way. I stepped out slowly. The emerald silk dress fit my body as if it had been made for me. Around my neck I wore my grandmother’s brooch—a small silver bird, in whose wings a dark red stone glittered. I had had this item since childhood and had never taken it off.

The conversations stopped all at once.

Miranda first looked at the dress, then at the jewelry, and finally at my face. Her lips opened slightly.

“Is that… Valerie?” the woman standing beside her whispered.

“Impossible,” Miranda answered.

Just then her elder son, Julian, appeared at the top of the stairs. He looked at me, and an expression appeared on his face as if he had been waiting for something for years.

“You came,” he said.

“Your family invited me themselves.”

Julian looked at his mother.

“Mother, tell the guests to move into the hall.”

“Don’t speak to me in that tone.”

“You can still end everything peacefully.”

Miranda tried to laugh, but her voice failed her. I walked past her. My palms were freezing, although from the outside I walked calmly.

At the hall door I remembered my grandfather’s words: “Evidence only shows its strength when all the witnesses are in one room.”

I went inside.

The music was still playing, but no one was dancing. Miranda’s eyes were riveted to the silver bird attached to my chest.

Then the elderly lawyer standing at the end of the hall opened a bag and took out a dark green folder. He looked at Miranda, placed his hand on the first page, and said:

“Mrs. Sterling, before you cut the cake, you will no longer be able to hide what belongs to your family…”

“Mrs. Sterling, before you cut the cake, you will no longer be able to hide what belongs to your family…”

Lawyer Alex Hart stepped forward. The heel of his shoe sounded sharply on the marble floor. The guests stared at one another, while I touched the silver bird brooch with my fingers. The cold metal frightened and calmed me at the same time.

“Alex, this is not a public spectacle,” Miranda said.

“You yourself invited all the witnesses into one room.”

“This is my house.”

“No, Miranda. This is the reason we are here today.”

Julian came down the stairs. He still held a small cup of coffee in his hand, although he was gripping it so tightly that his fingers had turned white.

“Mother,” he said, “what does he mean?”

Miranda looked at him.

“You should not be concerned with anything.”

“I have managed everything for three years, but every time I mention Father’s old documents, you leave the room. Now I am interested.”

Their conversation stirred a strange pain in me. Julian knew more than I had thought, but even he did not have the whole truth. That was exactly why he warned me years ago, when he accidentally heard in the kitchen how his mother said to another servant: “That girl sees far too much in this house.”

That evening, in the empty corridor of the kitchen, Julian stopped me for the first time.

“Leave here before it is too late,” he told me.

“Why?”

“Because your surname is spoken in this house as if it were a curse.”

“Cross?”

He did not answer me.

Now everyone needed an answer.

Alex opened the folder, but did not take out the document yet.

“Twenty-four years ago, Arthur Sterling signed an agreement according to which the controlling share of his company belonged to his partner, Elias Cross. Elias Cross then disappeared. The family stated that he had died of an illness.”

A whisper spread through the hall.

I knew that Grandfather was alive. But the guests did not know that.

“It was an old business dispute,” Miranda said sharply. “A settled matter.”

“No,” Alex replied. “Because the signature on the agreement was not forged. The document canceling it was forged.”

One guest set down a glass. The light sound of glass passed through the entire hall.

“Where is this Elias Cross?” someone asked.

For the first time I raised my voice.

“When he called my apartment, he was my grandfather.”

Every face turned toward me.

The color drained from Miranda’s face.

“You are in contact with him?”

“I always have been.”

“He deceived you.”

“Your family deceived me.”

Julian lowered his eyes. At that exact moment I realized that he knew one more thing he still was not telling me.

Alex took a small voice recorder from his bag and placed it on the table.

“We received this recording yesterday.”

Miranda reached out her hand.

“You cannot use that.”

“I haven’t listened to it yet,” he said. “But its existence is already enough for you to call your lawyer.”

Miranda looked at Julian.

“You gave this to him?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

The recorder’s red light came on. Alex pressed the button with his finger. First a rustling sound came from the speaker, then the voice of a man who belonged to Arthur Sterling.

“If Elias ever returns, tell him that his daughter did not survive that night either…”

My breath stopped.

Miranda closed her eyes.

Julian let the cup fall from his hand.

And a second voice sounded in the recording—a woman whom I had served every morning for three years…

“I told you, Arthur, no one will want to find the girl,” Miranda’s voice was recorded. “Making the child disappear was much easier than bringing the father back.”

Such silence fell over the hall that I could even hear the electric buzzing of the chandeliers. My knees gave way. I grabbed the back of a chair, but the silver bird brooch caught in my fingers and cut my skin.

“Turn it off!” Miranda shouted.

Alex did not stop the recorder.

Arthur’s voice trembled in the recording.

“Valerie is alive. Clara left her at the hospital. If the girl finds Elias, everything is over.”

I looked at every person in the room.

“Who is Clara?” I asked.

Miranda’s face no longer resembled the woman who had been smiling at the guests a short time earlier.

Julian said quietly:

“Our cousin.”

“No,” Miranda whispered.

“Mother, enough.”

Alex slid a birth certificate from the folder toward me.

“Valerie Cross, born to Clara Sterling and Elias Cross. Clara Sterling was Arthur’s younger sister. Miranda and Arthur hid for years that Clara had fallen into a coma after an accident, and you were taken to an orphanage.”

Blood pounded in my ears.

“My mother was alive?”

“For four years,” Alex answered. “Then she died. Grandfather kept her letters. It was written there that you were her daughter.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann ließ mich im Kreißsaal allein, doch als ich seine Blumen zurückschickte, verschwand sein Lächeln

Miranda put her hand on a chair.

“Clara could not raise a child.”

“So you decided that her child should not exist at all?” I asked.

“We had to save the family.”

“You saved the company. Not the family.”

Julian came to me. His eyes were red.

“I knew nothing about you, Valerie. I only knew that I found a photograph from your childhood in Father’s old safe. Mother told me it was a mistake from the past.”

“Then why did you warn me?”

“Because I saw your name in Father’s last will.”

Alex took out a second sheet.

The document confirmed that half of Arthur Sterling’s share belonged to Elias Cross’s inheritance. The forged cancellation signature was proven false by examination.

Miranda looked at the document and laughed. It was a desperate sound.

“You cannot take the company from me with one sheet of paper.”

“Not with one sheet of paper,” Alex said. “With bank transfers, letters, the recording, and witnesses.”

At that moment the head of security appeared at the hall door. He was holding a phone.

“Mrs. Cross, I am sorry to interrupt, but your grandfather needed an ambulance.”

My heart stopped.

“What happened to him?”

“He said that the matter was not over yet. And before they took him to the hospital, he left a message for the lawyer.”

Alex took the phone. One new message was visible on the screen, and the sender was my grandfather.

“Valerie, if you received this message, know that I did not leave the main evidence at home. It is in Miranda’s hands, and she plans to use it in the morning…”
