I Caught My Husband Kissing His Mistress in the Kitchen While I Was Twelve Weeks Pregnant, but One Letter of Mine Erased Her Smile

That night, when my husband was kissing another woman, I was still holding the ultrasound picture of our future child.

As I left the doctor’s office, I held the picture against my heart. I was twelve weeks pregnant, and all day I had been thinking about how I would enter the house, wait for Vincenzo for dinner, and place a small envelope beside his plate. The doctor told me the heartbeat was strong. And for the first time in many months, I felt that my life was moving toward something good.

I entered the house at eight in the evening. The sweet smell of Italian candles stood in the hallway, while quiet laughter came from the kitchen. The door was not fully closed. I stopped by its frame and squeezed the envelope so tightly that the paper crumpled.

Vincenzo stood beneath the chandelier.

Valentina had her arms around Maro’s waist.

They were kissing.

Valentina’s diamond earrings flashed with every movement. Her red dress suited our kitchen as if it had been sewn for this house. Vincenzo’s eyes were closed. What hurt me most was that he did not look toward the kitchen even once, where his wife was standing.

“Vincenzo,” Valentina said quietly, “are you sure she will not come back today?”

“Elena always comes back,” he answered. “She has nowhere to go.”

I placed my hand on my stomach. It was still so early that I could not feel the baby moving, but at that moment it still seemed to me that something inside reminded me: I was no longer alone.

I did not scream.

I did not smash the crystal vase that was within reach. I simply stepped back, went upstairs, and did not turn on the light in the bedroom. My knees immediately began to tremble. For years I had thought that living beside Vincenzo meant protection. That night I understood that protection and a prison are sometimes the same door.

I put documents, cash, three changes of clothes, my mother’s photograph, and my little sketchbook into the bag; a golden bird was drawn on its cover. Mother had given me this notebook at sixteen, and since then I had always carried it with me.

I did not take the jewelry. Nor the silk dresses. Nor the expensive shoes that Vincenzo gave me every birthday.

I entered the dining room while their voices could still be heard below. On the long mahogany table I placed the envelope exactly where I had intended to sit opposite him. My hands were trembling, but I still wrote the letter:

“You saw her before we saw you.”

At three hours and six minutes of the night, I left through the service door. I left my phone beside the bathroom mirror. I knew Vincenzo watched my every step, so I bought a cheap phone with cash and boarded a westbound train under another name.

Nineteen days later I was living in a small rented apartment on the outskirts of Denver. The floor was scratched, the faucet dripped, but for the first time in years the sound of my key opened only my door.

I found temporary work at an art center. I taught children to draw and returned home in the evening with fingers stained by paint. Freedom still looked like fear. Whenever an unfamiliar car stopped by the window, I held my breath.

On the nineteenth night, an unfamiliar number called me.

I let the first call go. The second as well. After the third call, my sister Sofia was crying in the voice message.

“Elena, don’t hang up. He came to me. He did not enter until I myself lured him into the house. He did not threaten me. He simply said he would not force you to return.”

I could not make a sound.

“He said no one could touch the baby, no one could use your family, and if anyone found you, he would not come to you. Elena… he has the ultrasound picture. He found it in the morning. Since then he has carried it against his heart.”

I lowered my eyes. My sketchbook lay on the little table. The golden bird on its cover shone beneath the light.

“What else did he say?” I barely asked.

Sofia inhaled.

“He said he could never force you to return. But before saying that, his lawyer brought him a folder. Vincenzo opened it and… Elena, now I think he was hiding something too.”

“What folder?”

Sofia did not answer me. She only told me that the next day someone would come to me whom I should not run from.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Llegué a casa de mi exesposa en Nochebuena y un niño con mis ojos hizo que Vincent palideciera

There was a knock at the door.

I rose slowly. I went to the lock and checked with my eye. A woman stood behind the door, holding a dark green folder. She pronounced my name and reached toward the lock with her other hand…

The woman standing behind the door said my name again.

“Elena Duka, I am lawyer Miranda Hale. Sofia sent me. If you do not want me to, I will not come in.”

I took my hand away from the doorknob. Her voice was calm, but I no longer trusted calm people. I looked at the street through the window. It was seven in the morning, and heavy white clouds hung in the sky. A brown car stood on the opposite sidewalk, though no one was visible inside.

“Are you alone?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Does Vincenzo know I am here?”

“No. And if he finds out, that will be my responsibility, not yours.”

I stood silently for several seconds. Then I opened the door, but did not remove the chain.

“Show me your identification.”

The woman slid the document under the door. Then she placed the folder on the floor. My name was written on the cover, by hand, in black ink.

“Is this from Vincenzo?” I asked.

“Partly. He did not bring the most important thing. I received it myself.”

I removed the chain. Miranda entered, snow water dripping from her shoes, although it had not yet snowed outside. I placed her folder on the table, beside my sketchbook.

“Sofia told me Vincenzo did not threaten you,” I said.

“Not this time. But kind words do not cancel the past.”

“Why do you say ‘this time’?”

Miranda looked at me.

“Because you do not know whom you were married to. Neither did I completely, until three weeks ago, when a woman brought a recording to my office.”

I felt coldness in my stomach.

“Valentina?”

Miranda nodded.

She opened the folder, but did not show me the first page immediately. First she took out a small voice recorder and placed it on the table.

“This recording is from the evening when you returned home. Valentina knew you were coming.”

“She knew?”

“She knew you were supposed to come. More than that, she planned everything.”

The recorder’s small red light came on. Valentina’s voice filled the room, clear and cold.

“She absolutely had to see it. Vincenzo needs a reason to get rid of her.”

The second voice was Vincenzo’s.

“I did not promise that she would leave.”

“Your wife is pregnant. If she stays, half of your property will belong to her child. If she leaves, everyone will think she abandoned the family herself.”

I made Miranda stop the recorder.

“This could be fabricated.”

“It could,” Miranda said. “That is why we are not relying only on this.”

She took out another sheet. On it was the number of a bank account opened in my name, which I had not used for years.

“This is your emergency account. Vincenzo opened it when his enemies wanted to intimidate him through your family. Money was deposited into the account every month, but during the last six months the money was going to another account.”

“Valentina’s account?”

“No. The account of a company registered in your name.”

I sat down on the chair. The thin floorboard creaked beneath my feet.

“I did not have a company.”

“You did. You signed the documents when Vincenzo told you it was only a formality for protecting property.”

Miranda slid the papers toward me.

“This company was used for laundering money during the last two years. But the signatures, transfers, and authorizations work in only one case: if Vincenzo proves that you knew what you were doing.”

“So he needed me to run away.”

“Yes. And Valentina did too.”

Coldness rose in my throat. My husband had not only replaced me with another woman. He may have used my name as cover for his crimes.

Miranda took out her phone.

“However, I have not let you hear the most important thing yet. The recording continues. There is one sentence there that changes everything.”

“Who said it?”

“Vincenzo.”

The recorder’s screen showed 22:14. Miranda pressed the button.

“If Elena leaves, I will lose everything. Not money. The baby. And if she ever finds out that I prepared her escape in advance, she will never again allow me to come near her.”

The recording stopped.

For a long time I could say nothing. It resembled remorse, but remorse had not begun before the kiss. It came only when I was already far away.

!!!  I Announced My Divorce from My Husband Directly from the Airport, but When He Saw the Post, He Suddenly Turned Pale in the Hospital Corridor

“Why did Valentina bring this?” I asked.

Miranda looked into the folder.

“Because Vincenzo deceived her too. He told her you would lose the baby and then disappear so that no one would have anything left. But Valentina discovered something.”

“What?”

“The doctor’s report. She knew about your pregnancy earlier than you were told. And she knew that the baby…”

A heavy удар on the door frightened both of us.

Miranda stood up.

“Do not open it.”

The second удар was stronger. Then a man’s voice was heard.

“Mrs. Duka, I am Vincenzo’s representative. He only wants five minutes to speak with you.”

Miranda pressed the folder to her chest.

“I am calling the police.”

The voice behind the door answered:

“You may call. But before they arrive, you need to know that your husband is at the clinic today. He received some news, and if Elena does not go there, the baby may…”

The man fell silent. Miranda looked toward me.

At that moment I understood that the truth hidden in the folder no longer concerned only my marriage. Something was happening in my body, in my child, and among the people who had acted silently around it for years.

Miranda finally opened the folder’s last section. A small medical envelope lay there.

“Before we go to the clinic, you must understand this,” she said.

Her fingers grasped the edge of the envelope…

Her fingers grasped the edge of the envelope, but I stopped her hand.

“First tell me what is inside.”

Miranda looked into my eyes. Fear appeared on her face for the first time.

“A paternity test.”

The sound of the dripping faucet was heard in the room. One drop. A second. A third.

“Does Vincenzo know?” I asked.

“He found out this morning.”

“And the result?”

Miranda opened the envelope. She took out several sheets from inside, but did not hand them to me immediately.

“Vincenzo is the biological father of the baby,” she said. “There is no doubt about it.”

I closed my eyes. I seemed to expect this answer, but it still struck me with such force as if someone had grabbed my chest. The baby was his. The man who had kissed someone else and destroyed my life using my name was the father of this little life.

“Then what did Valentina know?”

Miranda handed me the second sheet.

“She knew that Vincenzo had been hiding the existence of the baby for a long time. Not from you. From his partners.”

“Why?”

“Because in his organization there was a rule: an heir must not appear until all the property and business were safe. Vincenzo was breaking this rule. So Valentina decided to use your pregnancy as a weapon.”

Miranda turned on the voice recorder again.

Valentina’s voice filled the room:

“If she gives birth to the baby, Vincenzo will become soft. A soft man cannot manage things. But I can manage them.”

Then Vincenzo’s voice came.

“Do not touch Elena.”

“I will not lay a hand on her. You yourself will lead her to leave.”

This time I listened to the recording to the end. Valentina told him that she would arrange my escape so that it would appear that I had stolen the money from his accounts. Then Vincenzo would accuse me to the police, demand custody of the child, and I would be forced to return to his house.

“Is that why my name appeared in that company?” I asked.

“Yes. But he failed to calculate one thing,” Miranda said. “You never destroyed all the important documents. You had your mother’s habit: before signing, you wrote everything down in the sketchbook.”

My notebook with the golden-bird cover lay on the table.

I turned the pages. Among the drawings I had written dates, account numbers, and Vincenzo’s short instructions. At the time they had seemed to me only notes about spending money. Now my own handwriting had become legal evidence.

“Is this enough?” I asked.

“It is enough to protect you. And enough to start a case against Valentina. But it may also be used against Vincenzo if they prove that he knew about the scheme.”

At that moment my phone rang. It was the cheap phone whose number was known only to Sofia, Miranda, and one doctor.

Vincenzo’s name appeared on the screen.

“Do not answer,” Miranda told me.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi dissero di non toccare l’uomo più temuto di Chicago, ma quando le sue gambe reagirono il medico impallidì

But I picked it up.

“Elena.”

For the first time there was no command in his voice. Only exhaustion.

“What do you want?”

“I am at the clinic. They said the baby may be in danger. The doctor says you have severe stress and must be examined.”

“That is because of you.”

“I know.”

His two words proved more painful than any denial.

“Where is Valentina?”

Silence fell.

“She is no longer with me.”

“That is not an answer.”

“She left. She took the company files and part of the money with her. But before she left, she told me one thing: if I kept the baby, you would never return.”

“And you thought I would return?”

“I thought I could endure losing you. I was wrong.”

I went to the window. The brown car was no longer standing across the street.

“Vincenzo, I am not going to return to you.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

“Because the doctor said you may need help today. And because I understood for the first time whom I was losing.”

“You lost me when you decided that my silence meant consent.”

He said nothing.

Miranda leaned toward me and said quietly:

“Tell him that every conversation is being recorded.”

I did not want to frighten him, but it was the truth.

“Miranda is with me. Every word is being recorded.”

Vincenzo’s breathing changed.

“Good. Then hear everything. I will give you the full right to decide the child’s future yourself. Money, a house, protection…”

“I no longer need protection from you.”

“But you may need it from the world.”

At that exact moment Miranda’s phone rang. She listened, her expression changed, and she turned toward me.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Valentina is at the airport. She is going to cross the border. But before leaving, she sent a recording to journalists in which she says that you ran the entire money-laundering scheme.”

Vincenzo heard this from the other side of the line.

“Elena,” he said, “if she publishes this, everyone will think you are guilty.”

“And what will you do?”

“I will tell the truth.”

“Even if you are punished too?”

A long silence.

“Even if I am punished.”

Miranda went to the window and looked at the street. A black car stopped below. This time two police officers stood beside it.

“We must go,” she said. “Not only a doctor is waiting for you at the clinic. An investigator from the prosecutor’s office is there too.”

I took the bag. I put the golden-bird notebook inside and understood for the first time that I was no longer going to run away. I was going toward the truth.

But before I opened the door, Vincenzo said quietly:

“Elena, Valentina sent me another file. Your mother’s name is in it too.”

My hand stopped on the lock.

“My mother is dead.”

“I know. That is exactly why I am afraid to open the file.”

Miranda’s face turned pale.

On the way to the clinic I thought of only one thing: if Vincenzo was afraid of my mother’s name, then the darkest secret of my marriage had not begun on the night he kissed Valentina…

And he still did not understand that the heaviest blow awaited him not in Valentina’s recording, but in a letter left by my mother…
