Nine Years Later, My Ex-Wife Summoned Me by Letter, but When the Door of Her House Opened, I Froze on the Spot

The worn-out shoes of the children standing by the doorstep told me more than nine years of silence ever could. I got out of the car and simply watched them for several seconds. One was small, wet from the rain and covered in mud. The other looked bigger, but its heel had opened, and crumpled newspaper had been stuffed inside.

I was Daniel Whitmore. Sixty-five years old. A man who had a skyscraper in Manhattan named after him, owned a private jet, and had his own surname written on every wall of the company. But at that moment, in the Kentucky woods, in front of the old house, I felt poor for the first time.

I had a letter in my pocket. One sheet of paper, four words, and an address beneath them: If you still remember Emily, come here.

I reached toward the door, but a child’s voice came from inside.

“Mom, did he come?”

My breath caught.

A second voice, quieter, answered:

“I don’t know, child. I don’t know yet.”

The door opened slowly. A woman stood on the threshold, with time, exhaustion, and some unbroken strength all stamped across her face. Her hair had turned almost completely white. An old woolen wrap was draped over her shoulder, and a small wooden bead hung from its edge.

Emily.

I recognized her face immediately, but when she saw me, she did not become confused. She only tightened her fingers around the wooden bead and looked into my eyes.

“Daniel.”

My name sounded from her lips as if it had been left in some locked room nine years ago.

“Emily,” I barely said. “Did you send me this letter?”

“Come in.”

“There are children here.”

“I know.”

“Your children?”

Something flashed in her eyes, but disappeared immediately.

“Come in, I said.”

The house smelled of wet wood, charcoal, and boiled milk. A small stove smoldered in the corner of the room. An old clock hung on the wall and knocked once every minute, excessively loudly. There were three cups on the table, but tea was in only one.

Two children stood beyond the door. The boy, about eight years old, held a torn book in his hands. The girl was hiding behind him, and only one eye could be seen.

The boy looked at me.

“Is he that man?”

“Luka, go into the room,” Emily told him.

“But Mom, it said in the letter that he was supposed to come today.”

Emily lowered her eyes. And I felt in my chest a cold such as I had never felt, neither in a courtroom nor on the hardest day of the stock market.

“What did the letter say?” I asked.

Emily turned toward me.

“The letter addressed to you was not everything.”

“Then why did you summon me?”

“Because I have no time left.”

Those words suddenly made the room smaller.

“Are you sick?”

“Not me.”

The boy pressed the book to his chest. The girl touched the old wooden bead with her fingers, exactly like the one hanging from Emily’s wrap.

“Emily, tell me who they are.”

“They are my children.”

“I already understood that. Who is their father?”

Emily did not answer. Outside, the wind rose and the walls of the house groaned. My expensive watch suddenly felt strangely heavy on my wrist.

“Nine years ago, on the night when you threw me out of the house, there was one thing you did not know,” she said.

“What?”

She opened the drawer of the table and took out a dark-green folder. Its edges were worn, and a little house had been drawn on it with a child’s wax crayon.

Emily placed the folder on the table.

“Before you open it, you should know that what you see there cannot be put back.”

“I have already been unable to put nine years back.”

She reached toward the folder’s clasp, but the sound of a car engine came from outside. Emily went pale. The children immediately fell silent.

“Who is it?” I asked.

Emily looked toward the window and whispered to me:

“The one who should not have known that you came…”

Emily pressed the folder to her chest. Outside, headlights drew moving shadows across the window.

“Take the children to the back room,” she told me.

“No one is threatening me.”

“You do not yet know whom you are fighting.”

Someone knocked on the door three times. The boy held back his tears. Emily clenched the wooden bead in her hand and did not open the door.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I know you are home,” a man’s voice said. “It is time for you to fulfill the agreement.”

I looked at Emily.

“What agreement is that?”

“They want part of your property. The children are only the reason.”

“My property?”

“That is exactly why I wrote to you.”

The knocking was repeated more forcefully. Then there was the sound of metal in the lock.

I stood by the door.

“Step back, Daniel.”

“I left you nine years ago. I will not leave you a second time.”

For the first time Emily looked at me as if she wanted to believe those words, but was afraid.

Through the window I saw a black car and two men beside it. One of them held a folder in his hand.

“Who are they?”

Emily moved her lips, but could not make a sound.

The door shook.

Then the clasp of the folder lying on the table opened by itself. In the corner of the first sheet I saw my surname, and beneath it—the children’s dates of birth…

When I turned over the first sheet, my eyes froze on one line. Only the crackling of the stove and blows from outside against the door could be heard in the room.

The document said: Luka Whitmore and Nora Whitmore. Father—Daniel Whitmore.

“No,” I said quietly.

Emily sat down on a chair. Her face turned white as ash.

“You were pregnant?” I asked.

“I already knew that night.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I told you. You did not listen to me.”

Those words sounded in the room more strongly than the blows on the door. That night returned to my memory: my shouting, her hands on her stomach, the small doctor’s certificate lying on the table. I had thrown that certificate onto the floor then and told her that another manipulation would not destroy my career.

Emily took a second sheet from the folder.

“This is the doctor’s note. The eleventh week of pregnancy. The date—three days before that night.”

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“I came the next day. Your security stopped me at the door. They told me that, on your orders, I could no longer enter the house.”

I could not find an answer.

“Then who is this man?” I asked when another blow sounded outside.

Emily handed me a third document.

“My brother, Richard. He knew about the children. For years he threatened me that if I tried to tell you the truth, he would take the children away from me. Now he found out that you know and wants me to sign away custody.”

The door opened. Richard came in, followed by two men. He was tall, wore a black coat, and had a cold smile on his face.

“So, finally, rich daddy has arrived,” he said.

I stepped forward.

“No one will touch the children.”

Richard chuckled.

“You did not know they existed for nine years, and now you remember fatherhood?”

“Because they lied to me.”

“No. You yourself chose not to listen.”

Emily stood up.

“Richard, leave.”

“First you have to sign.”

He put new papers on the table. Luka stood behind the door and heard everything.

I took out my phone.

“I am calling the police now.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Call them. But before they arrive, you will make the mother of your children look like a mentally unstable woman who hid the children for years.”

Emily raised her head.

“You do not know what I have.”

“I know that you are alone.”

“I am not anymore,” I said.

At that moment a message came to my phone. It was from an unknown number, with a photograph attached: the entrance to our former Manhattan house and the date nine years ago.

Below it was written only one sentence: If you want to understand why Emily really left you, come alone tonight…
