On a Rainy Night Emily Asked Me to Take Her Home, but One Question of Mine Suddenly Changed Her Face

Emily looked at me as if my one question had touched her last hope.

“Where am I supposed to sleep?” I asked.

The rain struck the concrete of the parking lot as if someone were constantly banging on a door. The diner’s flickering sign went out and lit up again every few seconds. Emily stood by the open car door, crumpling her apron with both hands, and looked at me as if she were seeing me for the first time.

“What are you saying?” she barely whispered.

“Nothing. I made a bad joke.”

“Jake, where do you live?”

I had expected this question for three weeks and still could not prepare for it. I looked away. A folded blanket was visible on the back seat of the car. Under it, my only clean shirt was hidden.

“I have nowhere to go tonight,” I said at last.

Emily held her breath.

“You sleep in the car?”

I did not answer. The answer stood in my silence.

That night I saw for the first time how her face changed when she saw someone else’s hardship. It was not pity. Nor was it that awkward smile people put on when they want to help but are afraid to come too close. Emily simply opened the door wider.

“First we have to see my house,” she said. “Then we’ll think about you.”

“What is happening at your house?”

She took a small, copper-colored metal key from her apron pocket. The key had a silver moon-shaped pendant, with paint peeled off one side.

“I don’t know who I’ll find at home.”

When she said that, I became afraid for the first time.

It was eleven at night. The diner’s back door closed heavily behind us. The manager, Mr. Harris, watched us from inside and did not dare come over.

“Call the police,” I told her.

“I called. They told me that until they see a direct danger, they can do nothing.”

“Who is in the house?”

Emily bit her lip.

“My ex-husband, probably.”

The sound of the rain suddenly seemed very far away.

“Probably?”

“Daniel has been threatening me for three weeks. He called me at work today and told me that I had to return home, or he would find my little sister. Then I saw him by the back door of the bar. I don’t know how he got in, but his car was parked at the end of the street.”

“Where is your sister?”

“At the neighbor’s. She isn’t answering the phone.”

Her voice cracked on the last word.

She got into the car. I settled behind the wheel, but I did not start the engine.

“Where should we go?” I asked.

“Home.”

“You just said you don’t know who you’ll find there.”

“That is exactly why I have to go. If my sister is there and I do not check, I will never forgive myself for the rest of my life.”

Her fingers held the copper key so tightly that the moon pendant left a mark on her skin.

“Jake, please.”

There was fear in her eyes, but something larger than it could also be seen. Responsibility. She was ready to enter the house she herself had been avoiding, only to find out that her sister was safe.

I started the car.

As we left the diner behind, I saw a black car in the rearview mirror. Its headlights were off, but its engine was running.

“Is it him?” I asked.

Emily looked at the mirror and lost the color from her face.

“Don’t stop.”

It was fifteen minutes to her house at the end of town. During those fifteen minutes Daniel’s car appeared three times and disappeared twice. Emily looked at her phone, but there were no new messages on the screen.

Her house was a small, two-story building with a white door and a dark yard light. We stopped at the gate.

“The windows are dark,” I said.

!!!  Ich kam früher aus dem Auslandseinsatz zurück und fand meine schwangere Frau auf den Knien, während meine Mutter plötzlich verstummte

“My sister should be in room seven.”

“Stay in the car. I’ll check.”

“You should not get involved in all this.”

“I’m already involved.”

She looked at me. For the first time that night, her eyes were filled with more than fear alone.

We reached the front door. Emily slid the key with the moon pendant into the lock. The door opened immediately.

It was dark inside.

In the hallway there were wet footprints on the floor, leading deep into the rooms. Emily took my hand. Her fingers were cold as ice.

“Jake, if something happens, don’t follow me back.”

“I can’t promise that.”

Something fell from above.

Emily turned toward the stairs. At the same moment, a man’s voice came from deep inside the house.

“At last you’ve come.”

Emily froze in place.

I stepped in front of her.

Above, on the dark staircase, someone’s shadow moved slowly. Then a thin brown folder appeared in his hand, and the stranger reached his fingers toward its clasp…

The folder’s clasp opened before I saw the man’s face.

Emily gripped my arm so tightly that her nails dug into my skin.

“Daniel, don’t touch my sister,” she said.

The man standing on the stairs chuckled.

“You’re hiding behind others again, Emily? This time you brought a homeless man to protect you?”

Daniel came down from the darkness. He was tall, wore a black coat soaked by the rain, and had a fresh scratch on his right cheek. The brown folder still swung in his hand.

“Where is Lea?” Emily asked.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“First you tell me why you took my money.”

Emily hid behind me, though she immediately stepped forward.

“I did not take your money. My mother left this money to me.”

Daniel tilted his head.

“Your mother? Interesting. Then why is there evidence of forgery on her signature?”

My stomach clenched. Daniel had such confidence, as if every door in this house had been made for him.

“I’ll call the police,” I told him.

“Call them,” he answered. “But before they come, we will learn a few things about you. For example, why you sleep in a car. Or why you came here with a woman who never asked for your help.”

Emily turned around.

“You knew?”

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“You lived behind the diner?”

There was disappointment in his voice, but not disgust. That hurt me more.

“Twenty-three nights,” I said. “I lost my job. My apartment too. I didn’t want anyone to see me.”},{

Daniel chuckled.

“There, you see? Everyone hides their own things.”

A child’s voice shouted from above:

“Emily!”

Emily ran up the stairs. I followed her. On the second floor, the door of a small room was half open. Lea stood beside the bed, holding a yellow plastic bird with one broken wing.

“Auntie, he took my phone,” the child said.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

“Don’t frighten the child.”

“Why were you keeping her here?” Emily hugged Lea.

“Because you were not home and I couldn’t leave her alone.”

“You threatened me.”

“I warned you.”

I took out my phone and quietly turned on the voice recording. A small red dot lit up on the screen. Daniel did not notice it.

“What is in the folder?” I asked.

He turned his gaze toward me.

“That does not concern you.”

“If you threaten Emily, it concerns me already.”

“You are very kind to a man who has to sleep in a car.”

Emily was smoothing the hair behind Lea’s ear. Children’s drawings hung on the wall. On one of them was a house, above which was a large red cloud. In the corner of the drawing it said: “A home is when you lock the door from the inside.”

I don’t know why I remembered that sentence. Perhaps because that night I also felt for the first time how great the difference was between a roof and a home.

“Give me the folder,” Emily told him.

Daniel did not move.

“First you have to understand what you are signing.”

“I will sign nothing.”

“If you do not sign, you will lose Lea’s guardianship too.”

Emily’s face went pale.

“What did you say?”

“Your mother’s will says that your sister’s guardian can only be the person who covers the family debts after the sale of the house. I have already paid half.”

“That’s a lie.”

“The lawyer prepared the documents.”

The sound of car brakes came from the hallway. A few seconds later, someone knocked hard on the door.

“Police! Open the door!”

Daniel looked at me. Real fear appeared in his eyes for the first time.

“Show me the phone,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because I know what you were doing.”

Emily hid Lea behind herself.

They knocked on the door again.

Daniel suddenly reached for the folder, but I grabbed him by the wrist. The papers scattered across the floor. Emily’s signature was visible on the top sheet, and below it was a date that had not yet arrived.

“How is this possible?” Emily said quietly.

Daniel pulled his hand free from me.

“This is only the beginning.”

The door opened from outside. A police officer entered, but Daniel was already running toward the back door. I did not try to catch him. I looked at one sheet left on the floor and felt coldness in my heart.

At the bottom of the sheet, beneath Emily’s signature, my name was written.

And I was seeing this document for the first time in my life.

The officer snatched the sheet from my hand.

“We must take this to the station immediately,” he said. “But before we left, Emily told me something I had not expected to hear at all.”

“Jake,” she said, “why is your name in my mother’s will…”

“Jake, why is your name in my mother’s will?” Emily repeated.

The words hung in the hallway like wet breath. Outside, the red light of the police car flashed on the windows. One broken wing of Lea’s yellow bird fell onto the papers scattered on the floor.

“I don’t know,” I said.

The police officer, Officer Moren, carefully picked up the sheet.

“This signature is not yours?” he asked me.

“No.”

“But it says here that you are one of the witnesses to the inheritance.”

Emily turned toward me.

“You knew my mother?”

“No. At least, that is what I thought.”

The officer unfolded a second sheet. A copy of an old photograph was attached to it. In the photograph, a young woman stood on a shore, holding a small boy. Around the woman’s neck was a silver medallion with a small moon carved in its center.

My body froze.

The child was me.

“This is my mother,” I said.

Emily looked at the photograph. Then she slowly moved her gaze to my face.

“This is my mother.”

Such silence fell over the room that I heard every tick of the wall clock.

“No,” I whispered. “My mother died in a car accident when I was six. Her name was Marisa.”

“My mother’s name was Marisa too,” Emily said.

The officer took a yellowed certificate from the folder.

“It says here that Marisa Hayes temporarily gave her son, Jake Hayes, to another family because she had a serious illness at that time and could no longer raise the child. Three years later, she officially requested the return of her son. The request was denied.”

My ears became blocked.

“Was I adopted?” I asked.

“No,” the officer replied. “The documents show that a relative took you away. Your mother told everyone that she had been forbidden to contact you.”

Emily leaned against the wall.

“Why didn’t I know?”

The officer took out the last envelope from the folder. It was small and dark green, and in the corner, in ink, was written: “For Jake, when he no longer has a place to return to.”

!!!  Part 4 — On Christmas Eve, I Put My Daughter to Sleep in the Restaurant, but After One Whisper from Her, James Dropped the Documents from His Hands

My fingers began to tremble.

“This is your mother’s handwriting,” Emily said.

“Don’t open it if you don’t want to,” Moren told me.

All my life I had thought my mother had left me only one thing: her old guitar and several vague memories. Now I was standing in her house, with her other child, holding a letter that seemed to have been waiting for years to reach me.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were a letter and a copy of a new will.

“Jake, if you are reading this letter, it means that you are alone again. I did not want that. My house and savings belong to you, but only on the condition that you do not abandon Emily and Lea when they need you most. Daniel had access to my accounts and I know that he is destroying the family. If he tells you that everything belongs to him, do not believe him.”

Emily covered her mouth with her hand.

“Daniel knew?” I asked.

The officer picked up the copy of the will.

“Apparently he used the old documents and forged the new signatures. But there is something else here.”

“What?”

Moren turned over the back of the sheet.

There, in my mother’s handwriting, was one sentence: “Daniel knows that Jake is alive, and that is exactly why he is looking for him.”

At that moment my phone rang.

An unknown number appeared on the screen. The call rang only once and stopped.

Then a message arrived.

“If you want to know why your mother left you, come alone to the old bridge in the morning. If you tell the police, every record concerning Emily’s house will disappear.”

Emily read the message and shook her head.

“Don’t go.”

“I’m not going to.”

But a second message had already arrived.

It contained a photograph of our house, taken at that very moment. Emily stood by the window, and I stood beside her.

Below it were only four words: “I am still watching you.”

That night I understood for the first time that my mother’s secret did not belong only to the past. Daniel was still free, knew our address, and now also knew that I had become his greatest obstacle.

Moren took the phone from me and called another number. A few seconds later, his face changed.

“Jake, there is bad news,” he said. “Daniel has already filed a claim that this house is his property. And in the morning a person holding a temporary court order will come here…”

At that moment no one understood that what frightened Daniel most was not the house, but the recording that was still in his own car…
