James put the phone on the table and leaned on the counter with both hands.
Chloe came to me.
“Mom, why are you pale?”
I knelt in front of her.
“It is nothing, sweetheart. I am here.”
This lie was no longer a lie. For the first time that evening, I truly knew that I was with her.
James called the number.
“Richard, if you touch Chloe, I will hand everything over to the police.”
Laughter sounded from the phone.
“Do you still think that you set the rules of this game?”
“Where is the child?”
“In a safe place. And in the morning you will sign every document that I put in front of you.”
“That is a kidnapping threat.”
“No, James. This is only a reminder that money always wins.”
James ended the call.
I looked at his face.
“Chloe is with me,” I said.
“I know.”
“He wrote in the message as if he had her somewhere else.”
“Richard does not have Chloe. He wants us to become frightened and make a mistake.”
He took out the phone and called a lawyer.
“Evan, wake everyone up. We found Daniel’s documents. Richard sent us a threat.”
He listened to the answer.
“No, we will not wait until morning. We need a court protective order and a financial investigation right now.”
Within a few seconds, his face changed.
“What did you say? The board of directors signed?”
The person on the other side spoke for a long time.
James closed his eyes.
“Evan, if you back away now, I will lose you too.”
The lawyer answered that he was not going to sign the documents fraudulently submitted by Richard. He had also discovered that during the last six years, money had been transferred every month from the restaurant’s accounts to the same secret account.
“How much?” James asked.
He heard the answer.
“Two million?”
He remained silent.
I handed Chloe her plate. The child’s food was getting cold, but she continued eating slowly.
“James, what is happening?” I asked.
“Richard did not only steal your share. He also took Daniel’s life-insurance money and took out loans forged in your name.”
“In my name?”
“Yes.”
At that moment it became clear why letters had been coming from the bank that I could not open. Why unknown people called me and why I was afraid of opening every mailbox.
Richard was even using my poverty as a weapon.
At two o’clock at night the police entered the restaurant. Evan came with them too, holding court documents.
They found Richard at the back entrance. He had James’s office key, and some of the documents were in his car.
When I saw his handcuffs, I did not feel victory.
Only exhaustion.
“Grace, you destroyed all of this for me!” he shouted.
James answered calmly:
“No, Richard. You built this lie yourself.”
At the police station, at four in the morning, they made Richard hear his own voice. James had discovered a hidden camera in the restaurant kitchen. In the recording Richard said: “Grace is in such difficulty that she will sign any paper. Let us use even the child against her.”
Richard could say nothing for the first time.
Then he whispered:
“I did not mean it like that.”
Evan stopped the recording.
“That is your voice, Richard.”
“I was just talking.”
“No,” I said. “You were planning my life.”
It was the first time there had been no fear in my voice.
The investigation of the case continued for months. Richard was charged with fraud, embezzlement, and threats. The court approved Daniel’s share in Chloe’s name, while my forged debts were canceled.
James transferred part of his share into Chloe’s education fund.
I did not want to take the money.
“This is not charity,” he told me. “This is what Daniel left you.”
“And you?”
“I only realized late that family asks for help even when it has no voice.”
After Richard’s arrest, we emptied his office in the restaurant. I took down an old photograph hanging on the wall. In the photograph, Daniel and James were children, holding a small wooden boat in their hands.
Chloe picked up the photograph.
“Is this Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Will he ever come back?”
The answer to this question was the most difficult.
“No, sweetheart. But his love remained.”
Weeks passed.
I was still working at the restaurant, although I no longer cleaned the floor. James entrusted me with the administrative work. In the morning I checked the accounts, and in the evening I picked Chloe up from school.
We moved into a small, warm apartment. A snowy street could be seen from the kitchen window. There was always food in the refrigerator. This simple thing became almost a miracle for me.
Chloe attached a drawing to the wall of the room. It showed three people: me, herself, and a large yellow star in the sky.
“Dad is there,” she explained.
“I know.”
“Can James also be in our family?”
I smiled.
“If he wants to himself.”
“He has already come,” Chloe told me. “He is just knocking on the door for now.”
Several months later I received a letter from Richard. It was short. He wrote that he regretted it, that he needed help, and that he deserved my forgiveness.
James put the letter on the table.
“Do you want us to answer?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“For the first time, I am.”
I did not burn the letter. I simply put it in a folder and returned it to the shelf. Its consequences no longer needed an answer from me.
That evening Chloe found my old coat. She put her hand into the pocket and took out the silver keychain.
“This belonged to Dad, right?”
“Yes.”
“Who does it belong to now?”
I took the keychain in my hand. A small, almost erased star was engraved on it.
“To the one who opens the house when others are left outside.”
Chloe hung it around my neck.
Outside the window, the first snow began to fall.
This time we were staying at home.
And the door was locked from the inside.
