When I Was Fifteen, They Left Me Alone in the Storm, but When My Father Saw My Rescuer in the Hospital, He Lost the Color in His Face

As soon as my father entered the hospital room, he told me that I had almost frozen because I had destroyed the family.

The door had not even fully closed when Richard Sterling bent over my bed. His shoulders filled the whole doorway, his jaw was clenched as if he were standing not before me but in court. The device attached to my wrist made a thin, even sound. And my hair still smelled of rain.

“What were you doing in that house?” he asked me. “Do you understand what you have done to us?”

Mother stood behind him, clutching her bag with both hands so tightly that her fingers had gone white.

“Olivia, the police questioned us, the neighbors found out everything, and now you are lying here playing the victim?”

They saw neither my frozen fingers nor the blanket covering my shoulders. Father was thinking only about the old ceramic clock that had been left broken in the house.

“I told you not to touch that clock!” he shouted. “But you always think the rules do not apply to you.”

“I did not break it,” I whispered.

“You are lying again.”

An hour earlier, I would have cried at such words. I would have started arguing and begged him to believe me. That night, for the first time, I understood that you cannot prove anything to a person who does not want to see the truth.

At six in the evening, the wind battered the windows of our house. The smell of burnt cinnamon stood in the kitchen because Mother had left a cake on the stove. I was arranging books in the living room when I heard the quiet sound of breaking.

When I reached the clock, I saw Chloe. She was holding a small brass key. White fragments of the clock lay on the floor.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

She quickly hid the key.

“Nothing. You came in and knocked it over.”

“Chloe, I have just entered the room.”

“Tell Father yourself.”

Ten minutes later Richard came down the stairs. Chloe immediately began to cry. She knew exactly that one tear was enough for him.

“Olivia broke it,” she said. “I told her not to touch it, but she did it anyway.”

“That is not true!” I shouted.

Mother looked at me, then at Father, and immediately lowered her gaze.

“Olivia, you are older,” she said quietly. “You should have known better.”

Lightning flashed outside. Richard looked at the clock fragments and made a face as if someone in the family had died.

“You will get into the car,” he told me.

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere you can think about what you did.”

At eight in the evening, the car stopped on a country road. The rain was coming sideways. I was not wearing a coat, only a thin gray sweater and the small brass bird-shaped hair clip that my grandmother had given me when I was a child. Father opened the door.

“You will stay here until you stop repeating the lie.”

“Dad, please, it is cold.”

“This is also the result of your choice.”

Mother was sitting in the front seat. I pressed my hand against the window.

“Mom, tell me that you will come back.”

She moved her lips, but I could not hear her voice. The car drove away.

Soon I was alone on the road. Water gathered under my feet, and my hands no longer obeyed me. I tried to tell myself that they would come back. But ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Suddenly headlights appeared in the distance. A car stopped beside me. The door opened, and a woman in a dark coat got out.

“My God, child, what are you doing here?” she cried.

The woman wrapped her own coat around my shoulders. Inside the coat was the smell of lavender and old paper. I could no longer speak.

!!!  Part 4 — My husband did not buy shoes for our son, but suddenly turned pale when talking about the money he spent on himself

Several hours later, in the hospital, this woman took a seat in an armchair by the window. When the door opened and Father entered, the woman slowly stood up.

Richard first looked at her, then gripped the door handle. The color gradually drained from his face.

“You…” he barely uttered.

The woman said nothing.

“You died thirteen years ago.”

“No, Richard,” she answered calmly. “You simply wanted everyone to think so.”

Father’s right hand began to tremble. Then the left one did too. For the first time I saw that Richard Sterling was afraid of something.

The woman came to my bed and looked at my brass bird clip.

“Where did you find this?” she asked me.

“My grandmother gave it to me.”

Such pain appeared in her eyes that I immediately understood: my family’s greatest lie was not hidden in that clock…

The woman stopped beside my bed. Her fingers came close to the brass bird clip but did not touch it.

“This belonged to your grandmother,” she told me.

“You knew her?”

Richard exhaled loudly.

“Olivia, do not listen to her. This woman is sick and has been causing problems for years.”

“Strange,” the woman said. “A person who has been dead for thirteen years looks quite healthy.”

Mother stood by the door. She was still pressing the bag to her chest, although this time not from fear, but as if something hidden inside it needed protection.

“Richard, let us go,” she said quietly.

“You be quiet, Margaret.”

These words startled Mother. And for the first time I saw that her fear was caused by more than Father’s temper.

The woman lowered her head toward me.

“I am Evelyn Vance. I am your grandmother on your father’s side.”

Only the clicking of the machine could be heard in the room.

“My grandmother is dead,” I said. “That is what I was told.”

“I know what they told you.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough. You will not speak to my daughter anymore.”

“Now she will decide for herself whom to listen to.”

Father raised his hand as if he wanted to stop Evelyn, but stopped in time. The trembling of his hand could no longer be hidden.

That same night, in the hospital corridor, Evelyn asked to speak with me alone. We sat on a plastic chair beneath a white wall. The sharp smell of disinfectant burned my nose.

“That clock was not simply a clock,” she told me.

“Then what was it?”

“An object left by my brother. There is a small hiding place inside it. Richard spent years convincing everyone that the clock was a family heirloom of three generations, but in reality it concealed one thing that would take everything away from him.”

“What?”

Evelyn took a folded napkin from her bag and turned it between her fingers. There was a small spot of old ink on the napkin.

“I cannot tell you yet, until I am sure that you are safe.”

“Father left me on the road.”

“I know. That is precisely why we have no more time.”

In the morning, in a small hospital conference room, Evelyn brought her lawyer. His name was Dato Kavtaradze. He held a dark folder, whose corners bore traces of leather cracked by rain.

“The police have obtained a warrant to search the house,” he said. “But before they come, you must know one thing. The clock was not broken accidentally.”

“Chloe broke it,” I said.

Dato nodded.

“We have the camera recording.”

Richard laughed from the other side of the room.

“Which camera? There are no cameras in our house.”

“There was one you forgot about,” Dato replied. “On the shelf opposite the clock. An old baby monitor that turned on when it detected movement.”

Father’s face changed.

“That is illegal.”

!!!  Part 4 — My husband left me with his mistress at a charity gala and mocked my dress, but a call from my father instantly wiped the smile off his face.

“The recording was made by your own device in your own house,” Dato said. “The court will decide about that.”

I tried to regulate my breathing. The heating in the room was too strong, but I was still cold.

“What can be seen on the recording?” I asked.

Dato looked at Evelyn.

“Chloe can be seen. The key can be seen. And a conversation can be heard that changes everything.”

“What conversation?”

Evelyn lowered her eyes for the first time.

“Richard was not acting alone.”

Father immediately jumped up.

“This is madness!”

“Then why were you trying to open my safe at night?” Evelyn asked.

Silence fell over the room.

Mother put a hand to her lips. Her eyes stared at Richard.

“You told me there were only old papers in there,” she said.

Richard looked toward her.

“Margaret, this really is not the time now.”

“For me, it is.”

Dato opened the folder but took nothing out yet.

“I will show the full recording when the police investigator arrives. Until then, Olivia, you must decide whether you want to make an official statement.”

I went to the window. It was still raining outside. At the end of the street stood a black car with its engine running.

“Whose car is that?” I asked.

Dato came to the window. He watched it for several seconds.

“I do not know.”

Evelyn saw the car and her face became serious.

“I know whose it is,” she said. “And if it is here, that means they already know that they found not only evidence in the clock.”

“What else was there?” I asked.

Evelyn did not answer. The sound of quick footsteps approached in the corridor, the door opened, and a police officer entered with a folder.

“Mrs. Vance,” he said, “we found the recording, but before we play it, I have one piece of bad news. Richard Sterling has left the hospital and has taken your mother with him…”

“What did you say?” I jumped up.

The police officer locked the door.

“Security saw his car ten minutes ago. Presumably they are heading to your house.”

Evelyn looked at Dato.

“The clock.”

Dato took a small memory card from the folder. One plastic corner of it was broken off.

“We have already copied the recording,” he said. “Now everyone must listen.”

They turned on the monitor in the room. At first, only the distant sound of rain could be heard. Then the living room appeared. The image was slightly dark, but Chloe, standing in front of the clock, could be seen clearly enough.

In her hand was precisely the small brass key I had told them about.

“Do it quickly,” Richard’s voice was heard.

Chloe turned her head back.

“What if I cannot open it?”

“Then you will blame Olivia. As always.”

Mother covered her mouth with her hand.

On the recording, Chloe inserted the key into the back of the clock. A small plate came away from the ceramic body. Behind it, a narrow hollow appeared.

“There is nothing here,” Chloe said.

“Look again.”

“Dad, I do not want to anymore.”

“You already know too much to back out.”

Chloe took something out. It was a bundle of folded papers and a small wooden box.

“What is this?”

“The reason Evelyn had to remain dead.”

Evelyn closed her eyes. And I felt such cold that it was as if I were standing on that road again.

The recording continued.

“Was this for Olivia?” Chloe asked.

“It is in her name, but something could have remained for you too, if you act intelligently.”

“And if Olivia finds out?”

“She will not find out. No one listens to her, after all.”

Mother appeared on the screen. She was holding a cup of tea. She said quietly:

“Richard, this has gone too far.”

“You signed everything too, Margaret.”

!!!  Mi esposo me despidió frente a todo el hospital y arrancó mi credencial, pero alguien detrás de él dejó de sonreír

“I thought Evelyn was really dead.”

“You did not want to know the truth.”

The video stopped.

I looked at Mother. She was not in the room, but her face still stood before my eyes.

“Evelyn, what did all this mean?”

Evelyn slowly opened her bag and took out a dark blue folder whose golden letters on the edges had almost worn away.

“These are the documents of a trust fund created in your name. Before your parents’ marriage, my father left money and a house for you. Richard took control of the fund only until you turned eighteen.”

“But where is this money?”

Dato answered.

“It was withdrawn from the accounts over the years. Richard transferred everything into his own company.”

“How much?”

Dato placed a finger on the paper.

“Enough that a large part of this house, the company, and your life belongs to this fund.”

I sat down on the chair. The room light struck my eyes.

“Why did he tell you that Evelyn was dead?”

Evelyn was silent for a long time.

“Because I am his mother. Thirteen years ago I found out what he was doing. He forged my signature and tried to blame his own crime on me. When I refused him, he arranged an accident and told everyone that I had been in the car. I survived, but I was forced to hide.”

Richard found her in the hospital when I was fifteen? Now everything formed one chain.

“Why did you come to that road?” I asked.

Evelyn took my hand. Her fingers were cold.

“Because the car leaving your house reminded me again of that night. I go to that road every November. That night I saw you.”

The police officer took out the last sheet from the folder.

“There is one more thing here. The examination determined that your grandmother’s death certificate is forged. Richard signed it.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Now he can no longer escape.”

Then a message arrived on my phone from an unknown number.

“If you want to see your mother alive, do not tell anyone where the folder is.”

Below it was a photograph. Mother was sitting in an old warehouse, her hands tied. On the back wall was a round sign resembling a clock.

Evelyn looked at the photograph and went pale.

“That warehouse no longer exists,” she said quietly.

Dato snatched the phone from me.

“Then it is impossible for this photograph to have been taken today.”

Evelyn uttered the next words almost in a whisper:

“If that sign really is there, Richard has hidden not only the fund money. He may have another person held captive…”
