Part 4 — When I Was Fifteen, They Left Me Alone in the Storm, but When My Father Saw My Rescuer in the Hospital, He Lost the Color in His Face

When Evelyn said the last word, everyone in the room moved at once.

The police officer took the phone from me.

“The photograph will stay with me.”

“My mother is there,” I said.

“We do not yet know exactly where she is.”

“But if we wait, we may find out.”

Dato took me by the arm.

“Olivia, the most dangerous thing now is that Richard knows the folder is with us.”

The phone rang again.

This time it was a call.

Everyone looked at the screen.

An unknown number.

“Do not answer,” the police officer said.

But I had already pressed the button.

“Mom?”

For several seconds, only hoarse breathing could be heard.

Then Richard’s voice sounded.

“You always asked too many questions.”

“Where is Mother?”

“Where is the folder?”

“First tell me whether she is alive.”

Silence.

Then Mother shouted from far away:

“Olivia, do not tell him!”

Richard struck something. Mother’s voice stopped.

Something inside me froze, but this time the cold was not from fear. It was the boundary a person feels when realizing that there is no road back anymore.

“You cannot use her anymore,” I told him.

“You have nothing.”

“I already have something.”

“What?”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Your own voice.”

The call ended immediately.

The police recorded the number. Its location turned out to be in an old industrial district in the northern part of the city. Two cars went there. I was supposed to remain in the hospital, but I made sure that Mother would hear my voice.

At three in the morning I got out of bed. My legs were still trembling. The doctor told me that I was losing consciousness, but Evelyn handed me my coat.

That coat still smelled of lavender and old paper.

“You will stay with me,” she told me.

“No. This time I have to go.”

Fog stood in the industrial district. On the roofs of the warehouses, the rain resembled small stones. The police entered the building silently.

Only one light was on inside.

Mother was sitting on the floor, her hands tied with plastic cord. Richard stood beside her holding a small wooden box.

“Olivia, step back,” he told me.

“Let Mother go first.”

“The folder.”

Dato placed it in front of him.

Richard opened it quickly. He looked through several sheets and laughed.

“Do you really think this is enough?”

“No,” I answered. “What is enough is what everyone has already heard.”

At that moment the police officer turned on a speaker.

Richard’s own voice sounded through the warehouse.

“You will blame Olivia. As always.”

His voice bounced off the walls.

“No one listens to her, after all.”

Richard froze.

I watched his face. For the first time he heard his own words as others heard them. Not the words of an angry father. Not the justification of a tired man. Cold, calculated cruelty.

“This is fabricated,” he said.

“It is your voice,” Dato answered.

“You cannot prove anything.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You can say again that I am dead.”

Richard looked at her and stepped back.

“You are destroying everything.”

“No, Richard. I am only showing what you did.”

The police officers put handcuffs on him. He tried for a long time to regain control.

“Margaret, tell them that you knew.”

Mother raised her head.

“I knew only as much as you showed me. But I knew enough not to leave Olivia alone on the road.”

For the first time Richard had no answer.

His lawyer came that very morning, but after seeing the case materials, he left within a few minutes.

“I no longer represent you in this case,” he told Richard.

“You cannot do this.”

“I can. And I am doing it.”

That same day the banks froze his accounts. The company’s board of directors called an emergency meeting. Richard kept calling on the phone, but no one answered anymore.

I returned to the hospital.

There, where everything had begun, a small table stood beside the bed. My brass bird hair clip was lying on it. The nurse had said she found it in my clothes.

I looked at it for a long time.

It was the only thing that had come with me from that house. I had thought the little clip given by my grandmother was only a memory. Now I knew that it was the last thing left from that family that Richard could not control.

Three weeks later I entered the house for the first time.

The place where the clock had stood in the living room was empty. A round dark mark remained on the wall. On the floor lay one small white ceramic fragment.

Chloe stood on the stairs. Her hair was disheveled, her hands hidden in her pockets.

“Olivia, I did not know it would end like this.”

“You knew it was a lie.”

“I was afraid of him.”

“I was afraid too.”

Chloe lowered her head.

“Can you ever forgive me?”

I could not answer immediately.

“Maybe. But forgiveness does not mean that I will let you control my life again.”

Mother listened to us from the other room. For the first time she did not interfere.

Six months later, Mother and I were living in a small apartment in a seaside city. From the window, the harbor cranes could be seen in the morning. Mother worked in a library, and I slowly began returning to school.

Evelyn came once a week. She always brought lemon cake, although not once did she manage pieces of the same shape.

“It is a family tradition,” she said.

“Burning the cake?”

“No. Surviving imperfection.”

Sometimes we sat together in the kitchen. The folder, now transferred into my name, lay on the table. Part of the fund money was returned. We sold the house. With the remaining money Mother began a new life, and I made savings for university.

Richard’s trial lasted a long time. He denied his crimes from beginning to end, but the recordings, bank documents, and forged certificate put everything back in its place.

I went to court only once.

When the judge asked me whether I wanted to say anything to Richard, silence fell over the courtroom.

I looked at him.

He looked much smaller than I remembered.

“I am no longer trying to make you believe who I am,” I told him. “That is no longer your business.”

Then I walked out.

The sentence was announced later, but that day the thing that hurt me most ended: I no longer needed his recognition.

One morning, almost a year later, the first snow came. I was sitting by the kitchen window filling out a university application. Mother was setting down the kettle. Evelyn had fallen asleep in the armchair.

“Mom,” I asked, “do you really think a person can start completely over?”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich stellte mich vor meinen Sohn, als seine leibliche Mutter ihn öffentlich zurückforderte — dann hörte mein Vater auf zu lächeln

Mother poured the tea.

“Not completely from the beginning. With everything they have endured. They simply choose for the first time where to go.”

Small snowflakes fell against the window.

I took the hair clip and put it in my hair.

That same evening I received a letter from Richard. He wrote to me for the first time since the trial. I recognized his handwriting on the envelope immediately.

“Come. Talk to me just once. I am your father.”

I looked at the letter for a long time.

Then I handed it to Mother.

“Will you open it?” she asked.

“No. I have already heard enough.”

Mother put the letter in the trash. Neither of us felt victory. Only peace.

That night Evelyn noticed my clip.

“You still wear it?”

“Now because I want to.”

She smiled.

Outside, the snow began falling more heavily. I went to the window and touched the brass bird. For years I thought it was only an object left by my grandmother. In reality, that little bird survived the house, the lie, and the road where everyone thought I would be lost together with me.

But I was not lost.

I simply found the way home for the first time.

Missed the beginning?
