After my husband’s death, I took responsibility for raising his daughter, but when the box was opened, the smile disappeared from Lily’s face

That evening, when Lily told me that Daniel had to hand the box over to me only after one year, the knife slipped from my hand and fell heavily onto the kitchen floor.

The knife struck the wooden board. Its tip got stuck in a small crack in the ceramic, while I simply stood for several seconds and stared at Lily. Beyond the window, November rain beat against the glass. The only sound in the house was the monotonous hum of the refrigerator.

“What do you mean, Lily?” I asked, trying not to let my voice tremble.

Instead of the six-year-old girl who usually sat on my lap in the evenings and asked me to read fairy tales, a strange, tense child stood before me. She held a small wooden box in her hands. A small copper bird was engraved on the lid of the box, and its wing looked as if it were broken on one side.

“Dad told me to give it to you today,” she repeated.

“Why today?”

Lily lowered her eyes.

“Because one year has passed today.”

I knew what she meant. Tomorrow was the anniversary of Daniel’s death. We both felt that day approaching, but neither of us spoke about it.

Several years earlier, I had said goodbye to my own family in one day. A car accident took my husband and little daughter from me, and left me in an empty apartment where my child’s drawings still hung on the walls. Since then I had avoided people. I started working as a cleaner at a hospital because the people lost in white coats did not care about my name.

Then Daniel came.

Six-year-old Lily sat in his ward every day. A huge backpack lay on the floor, and her curls were always tousled. Daniel’s hands trembled so much that he could not braid her hair. One morning, he dropped the comb onto the floor.

“Please help me,” he said quietly. “I won’t be a good father today.”

“You are already a good father,” I replied.

I combed Lily’s hair, took her to the dining room, and cooled her porridge with my own hand. From that day, I slowly entered their little world.

Daniel was dying. His wife had died when Lily was born, and he had almost no relatives. In the evenings we talked over tea until the machine near his chest began to quietly beep. Once he squeezed my hand.

“Marry me, Anna.”

“Daniel, you hardly know me.”

“No,” he told me. “I know how you look at Lily when she thinks no one notices.”

We got married in the hospital ward. Two weeks later Daniel died, and I became Lily’s guardian. A year had passed since then. We laughed together, prepared breakfast together, and quietly cared for each other’s pain.

And now this box stood on my table.

“What else did Dad tell you?” I asked.

Lily bit her lip.

“He told me that you might get angry.”

“At me?”

“No. At him.”

I picked up the box. The wood was cold as ice. Under the copper bird there was a small keyhole, but there was no key.

“I can’t open anything here,” I whispered.

Only then did Lily look directly at me for the first time.

“The key is in the house. Dad told me that you would find it yourself. But first you have to remember what he promised you on the day he took your hand.”

The white ceiling of the hospital, Daniel’s frozen fingers, and his tired eyes returned to my memory.

“I am not asking you to marry me only because of Lily,” he told me then.

I took those words as a confession of love.

“Where is the key?” I asked.

Lily looked toward the hallway.

“There, where Dad first hid the truth.”

The house suddenly became very large and very quiet. I stood up and entered his study. Daniel’s photographs hung on the walls, and his leather notebook lay on the desk. The same bird with the broken wing was engraved on the notebook’s cover.

Lily followed me.

“Mom, if you find it, then don’t forget that I love you.”

These words frightened me more than the box.

I opened the notebook. The first pages were blank. On the last page there was only one sentence: “Anna, before you open it, trust me one last time.”

Below, a small pocket could be seen. I reached toward it when the door handle slowly went down and someone pronounced my name from the hallway…

An unfamiliar woman’s voice froze me at the sound of my name.

“Anna, open the door. I am Daniel’s lawyer.”

Lily crouched behind me and clutched the box with both hands.

“Dad said you shouldn’t open it alone,” she whispered.

“We are not alone anymore.”

I opened the door. A tall woman stood on the threshold, holding a leather bag in her hand.

“I’m Miranda. Daniel told me to come exactly on this day.”

“Why didn’t you tell me beforehand?”

“Because he knew that if you found out beforehand, you might run away.”

Her answer left a cold heaviness in my stomach.

Miranda looked into the study and saw the box.

“Did you find the key?”

“Not yet.”

She pointed at Daniel’s notebook.

“Turn back a page. It should be there.”

I took a small key from the pocket. It turned out that it had been sewn into the leather seam of the notebook.

Lily took my hand.

“Mom, don’t open it if you aren’t ready.”

“What should I prepare for?”

Miranda lost her calm for the first time.

“For the fact that Daniel’s death was only the beginning.”

I opened the lock. I slowly lifted the lid of the box. Inside lay one folded letter, a hospital card, and a small memory card. I took hold of the letter, but Miranda stopped me by the wrist.

“You must listen to the recording first,” she said. “Because what you hear there will change everything…”

Miranda put the memory card into a small device. The ticking of an old clock could be heard in the room. Lily stood beside me, her fingers wrapped around my hand.

First Daniel’s cough sounded in the recording. Then his voice, tired but clear.

“Anna, if you are listening to this, one year has passed and Lily has fulfilled my request. I know that it hurts you now. You may even hate me. But I had to tell you the truth.”

I sat down on the chair.

“Dad…” Lily exhaled.

Daniel continued:

“On the day I first saw you, I was not only a sick father in the hospital. I was dying of fear. My cancer really was at the final stage, but more than death, I was afraid of losing Lily.”

Miranda lowered her eyes.

“Daniel, don’t do this,” I whispered, as if he were standing before me.

“I knew who you were, Anna. I knew about your husband and daughter. I saw your story in the hospital archive. I knew that you had lost a child and had run away from the world after that. That is why I chose you.”

Blood roared in my ears.

“Chose you?” I asked Miranda.

“He first saw your help,” she replied. “Then he hired a private investigator. I learned this part late too.”

Daniel’s voice trembled in the recording.

“But one thing was not a lie. I fell in love with you. Lily loved you too. The marriage was a plan, but the love that appeared afterward I could not plan. If you marry me, you will not receive the house and money merely to become her guardian. You will receive Lily because she chose you before I asked you for anything.”

The letter trembled in my hand.

“So he knew my life before I could barely even remember his name,” I said.

Miranda answered quietly:

“He was afraid that the truth would be more cruel if it came late.”

In the recording Daniel said at the end:

“Anna, if you get angry with me, you have the right. But never tell Lily that she was the reason I chose you. You are her mother not on paper, but from the morning when you combed her hair and told her that she must not hide her hunger.”

The recording ended.

Lily sat on my lap and began to cry.

“I didn’t want to deceive you, Mom. Dad told me that if I gave you the letter earlier, I might be left alone again.”

I hugged her, but pain and warmth fought each other in my heart.

Miranda took the hospital card from the box.

“This is not only a recording. In the last weeks of his life, Daniel discovered something else too. Someone had interfered with his medical file. Someone had changed several documents concerning his treatment.”

“Who?” I asked.

Miranda took out her phone.

“That is exactly what Daniel was trying to find out. Yesterday I received a call from this number.”

An unknown number lit up on the screen.

“They told me that if you opened the box, it would already be too late. Then they gave me one name.”

“Whose?”

Miranda turned the phone toward me. The screen said: “Thomas Reed — Daniel’s brother.”

I was hearing this name for the first time.

At that same moment the phone rang. Miranda answered, listened for several seconds, and her face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

She slowly lowered the receiver.

“Thomas is coming to this house. He says that Lily is his daughter and that you must hand her over to him today…”
