The Groom’s Family Humiliated the Poor Bride, but One Question at the Dinner Table Suddenly Erased Arthur’s Smile

When I entered the closed room of Arthur’s family, I already knew that the people gathered there wanted not my wedding, but to use me.

Ten minutes earlier I had been standing in the restaurant corridor, holding a small wooden box. Inside was an anniversary gift prepared for his parents—a copper compass made according to an old map, whose needle always leaned toward Briarwood instead of north. I told Arthur that it was connected to their family history. Then he smiled at me and kissed me.

But now I could hear his mother’s laughter from behind the half-open door.

“Don’t worry, Arthur,” Evelyn said. “As soon as you marry her, you will correct this mistake.”

For several seconds, my breath caught.

“I know, Mother,” Arthur replied. “She is sweet, but she has no money, no connections, and is very simple.”

His father chuckled.

“Then why are you marrying her at all?”

Arthur laughed as if it were the best joke.

“Because she is simple.”

Laughter spread through the room. I gripped the compass box more tightly until the wooden corner dug into my palm.

For six months I had believed him. We drank coffee together in the mornings, walked on Saturdays, and at night he told me that he loved my “simple life.” He thought I helped small companies put their operations in order. That was not a lie. He simply did not know that one of those companies was mine.

Eight years ago I started Northbridge Logistics with three employees. Now I owned seventy-one percent of it, and its value was slightly more than thirty-eight million dollars. I hid this because as soon as my previous boyfriend learned the truth about my wealth, he turned love into an investment plan.

With Arthur, I wanted to find out who he was before he learned what I had.

Now I knew.

“After she signs, she will also help Father put the accounts in order,” Evelyn continued.

“The main thing is that she signs the lawyer’s papers,” said Arthur’s sister, Madison.

That sentence finally stopped me.

I entered the women’s restroom. In the mirror I saw my own face: calm, slightly pale, and strangely unfamiliar. I thought I should cry. Instead, I took out my phone.

“Nina, I want a full investigation of Arthur Wells and his family,” I told my lawyer. “The finances too. Immediately.”

Then I called Marcus, my chief financial officer.

“Do you remember Wells Development?”

“The one asking for financing for the Briarwood project?”

“Yes. Approve none of the obligations. No letter, no promise.”

“Elene, why?”

I looked into my own eyes in the mirror.

“Because I have just found out whom he was going to marry.”

I entered the hall smiling.

Evelyn looked over my modest black dress.

“You are very… simple.”

“Thank you,” I replied calmly.

Arthur kissed me on the cheek.

“Here is my fiancée.”

He did not notice that my smile was no longer the old one.

For two hours I listened to them talk about business until Charles raised his glass.

“Soon we are opening major financing. Northbridge Capital will help us.”

Northbridge Capital was the investment company I had created.

I slowly put my glass down on the table.

“Who do you have a contract with?” I asked.

Arthur’s smile grew wider.

“With a company whose founder is so secretive that nobody knows who he is.”

“Interesting,” I said.

At that moment my phone rang. It was a message from Nina. She had sent me four documents and only one sentence: “Elene, do not act on this alone.”

I opened the file, placed my finger on the first page, and Arthur’s family’s debt appeared on the screen. Just then Arthur took a folder from his jacket and held it out toward me…

There was a prenuptial agreement in the folder. Arthur was smiling as if it were an ordinary romantic gesture.

“It is just a formality, Elene,” he told me.

“Formality often hides many things,” I replied.

Madison chuckled.

“If you love each other, signing should not be difficult.”

I turned through the papers. Almost all future income was considered the Wells family’s separate property, while the family’s debts would become my family responsibility.

“Quite balanced,” I said.

Relief showed in Evelyn’s smile.

My phone vibrated again. It was a new message from Nina: Arthur had personally guaranteed several of their debts. If the financing collapsed, he would lose millions.

Charles raised his glass.

“To our future family.”

“To transparency,” I added.

For the first time I saw fear in Arthur’s eyes, but he immediately hid it.

“Take it home, read it calmly, and sign it,” he told me.

I closed the folder.

“Certainly.”

They thought I was walking into the trap. They did not know that the last road to their survival depended on one call from me.

That same night Nina called me.

“The agreement is only the beginning,” she told me. “Arthur’s father prepared another document this morning as well. If you sign this, they will demand access to your company…”

I heard Nina’s words in the car. I was in the restaurant’s underground parking lot, it was half past ten in the evening, and the folder lay on the passenger seat.

“What document?” I asked.

“A power of attorney. Not only over the family property. Over your future business interests too.”

I pressed my fingers against the steering wheel.

“Do they know who I am?”

“No. But someone has already studied your work history. And I found one more thing.”

“Tell me.”

Nina fell silent for several seconds.

“Arthur met with the family lawyer three weeks before meeting you. The record says that they should make you believe they are wealthy, and then gain access to your assets through marriage.”

At that moment everything fell into place.

“Can you prove it?”

“I obtained an audio recording of the meeting. Legally. The conversation was stored in the security system of the family office.”

Half an hour later we were sitting in Nina’s office. A small wooden compass lay on the table. I could no longer remember when I had last looked at it.

Nina turned on the recording.

First Charles’s voice was heard.

“If Northbridge does not transfer the money to us, the bank will take Briarwood away from us.”

Then Arthur’s calm voice:

“That is why we must hurry the wedding.”

“Does the girl have anything?” he asked the lawyer.

“Officially, a small consulting business.”

Arthur chuckled.

“Then we will convince her that our family is her chance. Once she signs, everything she receives after the marriage will become joint.”

I stopped the recording.

“This is enough.”

Nina nodded.

“There is something even more important. Northbridge’s financing must be approved tomorrow morning. They are waiting for your signature.”

“They will not get it.”

In the morning I went to the Wells house. Evelyn opened the door and immediately looked at me.

“You brought the folder?”

“Yes.”

Charles stood by the fireplace, while Arthur was waiting by the stairs.

“At last,” he said. “I knew you would act sensibly.”

I put the folder on the table.

“First, you need to hear one thing.”

I turned on the phone.

Arthur’s own voice rang through the room: “Once she signs, everything will become joint.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“What… is this?”

Charles took one step forward.

“Turn it off.”

“Why?” I asked. “Shouldn’t we be ashamed of the truth?”

Arthur turned pale.

“Elene, talk to me. This is taken out of context.”

“The context is exactly what you told me for six months. I am simply hearing your voice without the others for the first time.”

Charles opened the folder, and his hand was trembling.

“We can explain everything.”

“You can, but I no longer trust you.”

A call came in on the phone. It was Marcus.

“The financing has been suspended,” he said. “But the problem is bigger than we thought. Someone tried to enter Northbridge’s system. And the trail leads directly to the Wells office…”

Arthur raised his head. For the first time he no longer looked like a confident man. He looked more like someone who had locked a door and only now realized that he was not alone in the room…
