Part 4 — When My Daughter-in-Law Turned My Mother’s Lake House into a Party, My Husband Stopped Smiling for the First Time After One Call from Me

The application was signed from the house where Rose’s party was still continuing.

I looked at Luke.

“What does this mean?”

For the first time he did not find a ready answer.

“Nino, believe me, I only wanted to take a temporary loan.”

“In my name?”

“The situation was complicated.”

“What situation?”

Rose raised her hand.

“This is not my business.”

“It has just become your business,” Mirian told her.

David called the bank representative again. For ten minutes we stood by the car while the guests quietly left their glasses and coats in the house.

Luke’s phone rang without stopping.

“It’s the bank,” he said.

“Answer it,” I told him.

He looked at the screen and canceled the call.

Then his lawyer called. Luke tried to move a few steps away from the room.

“Yes, it’s me… No, the money has not been transferred yet… No, the document is genuine…”

Suddenly he fell silent.

“What do you mean, you no longer want to handle my case?”

He stopped there. The phone fell in his hand.

The lawyer refused because he had already been informed about the false documents submitted to the bank. Luke looked at me again.

“Nino, everything will be fixed.”

“No, Luke. For the first time everything will fall into its true place.”

Mirian brought the guests back into the living room. Mother’s embroidered cushion lay on the table, wet with champagne. The glasses were arranged beside it, while a muddy footprint from one guest’s shoe could be seen on the floor.

“Now we will listen to the recording,” Mirian said.

Luke shook his head.

“Is it necessary?”

“You decided that it should not be necessary when you entered someone else’s house.”

David turned on the recording.

Luke’s voice was heard in the room again.

“If Nino resists, tell her that I gave you the keys.”

!!!  Meu marido anunciou uma viagem misteriosa, mas quando pedi que levasse a mala preparada, o sorriso dele desapareceu

Then Rose’s laughter.

“In the end she’ll clean it herself anyway.”

Luke sat down on a chair. For the first time he heard his own words the way I heard them. His own voice stood against him, cold and foreign.

“I didn’t say it like that,” he whispered.

“You did,” I answered.

Mirian took photographs. The champagne stain on the ceiling, the scratched table, the broken cup, and the garbage thrown in the garden were all recorded.

Rose tried to come closer to me.

“Nino, we are family. Are you calling the police over one party?”

“No. You called them yourselves when you decided that my house was yours.”

“I’ll return everything to you.”

“It is no longer only about things.”

Mirian handed Luke and Rose official notices. They were forbidden to remain in the house while the investigation continued. The attempt to withdraw the money was registered as a separate case. Luke’s fingerprints were found on the documents, while the bank cameras recorded Rose handing over an envelope.

Rose immediately said that Luke had forced her.

Luke answered that everything had been Rose’s idea.

They could no longer save each other.

And I entered the house.

The living room was empty. I picked up Mother’s cushion from the floor and checked it with my hand. A thread had been pulled out in one corner. I put the broken cup pieces into a small paper bag.

Only one thing remained on the kitchen shelf: a small spare copy of the ceramic bird, which Mother had once made from clay. It was missing one wing.

I did not stay in the house that night. Luke asked me to go to a hotel.

“Please, give me one chance.”

“You had a chance every time you could have told the truth.”

“I love you.”

I opened the door.

“Love is not the right to steal my name.”

!!!  PARTEA 4 — La șase luni după înmormântarea soțului meu, l-am găsit lângă mormânt, iar când m-a văzut a făcut un pas spre mine

Several weeks were difficult.

I had to go to the bank every day. I filled out applications with the lawyer. A case was opened against Luke for financial fraud and unlawful entry. Rose was held responsible for property damage and stealing the keys.

At the first court hearing they sat side by side, but they no longer looked at each other.

The judge listened to the recording.

“In the end she’ll clean it herself anyway.”

Rose lowered her head.

Luke closed his eyes.

I was not thinking about punishing them. I was thinking only that I had spent my whole life cleaning up someone else’s chaos and called it a family duty.

Six weeks later I signed the divorce papers.

I temporarily closed the lake house and began all the repairs with my own hands. I painted the ceiling. I cleaned the floor. I took Mother’s cushions to a seamstress. A small scratch remained on the wooden arm of the sofa, but I decided not to hide it anymore.

The scratch reminded me that the house had survived.

Three months later I opened a small family pastry shop in the city. In the morning I took the children to school, and then I baked cinnamon buns. In the evenings I watered the garden plants. My life did not suddenly become big, but for the first time it was mine.

One morning my daughter, Ana, brought me a drawing at the lake house. In the drawing stood a small wooden house, a yellow sun, and two people. One of them was me. The other held a ceramic bird in their hand.

“Is this Mother?” I asked.

“No, this is you when you are no longer afraid,” she answered.

That evening the first snow came.

Luke sent me a message.

“I want you to explain to me at least once why you ruined my life.”

A second message followed soon.

“Rose confessed everything. Now you are the only person who can change her testimony against me.”

!!!  Part 4 — The pregnant ex spent six months alone, but on Christmas Eve a call from the hospital silenced everyone in my family

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I did not ruin your life. I simply stopped covering for you.”

I blocked the number.

I returned to the lake house. There was silence. Small snowflakes struck the window. In the kitchen I again arranged Mother’s cups with their handles facing one way.

I put the key on the shelf.

The ceramic bird touched my fingers.

This time I did not hear Mother’s voice. I heard my own voice.

“This house is mine again.”

Outside, the lake was beginning to freeze.

Inside, for the first time, I was waiting for no one.

Missed the beginning?
