My daughter-in-law rented my mother’s lake house for a party, but after my calm response my husband stopped speaking

That evening I entered my mother’s lake house and saw champagne stains on the ceiling, while strangers were lying on her favorite embroidered pillows.

There was still noise in the yard. Car headlights flickered between the pines, and the music roared as if it were not my childhood home there, but a cheap entertainment hall. It was nine in the evening, and I held only the car keys in my hand. The door of the house was open.

I went inside.

Spilled wine on the kitchen floor left a sticky trail. On the table stood a half-eaten cake, and beside it was my mother’s white porcelain cup with a crack, which she used only on special days. On one of the chairs, someone had placed a blue cover sewn by my mother under their feet.

At that moment I felt such cold in my heart, as if I had been thrown into the lake water.

“Pour more, Rose!” someone shouted from the living room.

I recognized Rose’s laughter immediately.

My husband’s younger sister stood by my mother’s old sofa, holding a champagne bottle and handing filled glasses to the guests. A glittering crown was pulled down on her neck, as if the whole house had been her birthday present.

A few days earlier she had called me and asked for permission to use the lake house.

“Mariam, it will be only one evening. What is wrong with you, why is it so difficult for you?” she had said then.

“Mother’s house is not for parties, Rose. Besides, there are many old things there.”

“You attach too much importance to everything. It is one night, nothing more.”

“No means no.”

Silence fell in the phone for several seconds.

“Then do not be surprised if the family turns against you,” she said at last and hung up.

I thought about those words for a long time, but I still tried not to spoil the relationship. Rose always behaved this way. She entered our house without knocking, took food from the refrigerator, and scolded the children for their laughter.

“Your children shout all day,” she would tell me when my twelve-year-old Niko and eight-year-old Ana played in the yard.

“They are children, Rose.”

“Children are everywhere, but not everyone screams like that.”

That morning, when I got ready to go to the lake house, the keys were no longer on the shelf. I knew exactly that I had put them there. I searched the whole house. Bags, drawers, coat pockets. I could not find them.

I did not call Luka immediately. I knew what he would say.

“You probably left them somewhere,” or “Rose would not do that.”

I went anyway. Perhaps I had dropped the keys near the house.

Now the answer stood before my eyes.

I quietly came out, closed the door so no one would hear, and got into the car. My hands rested on the steering wheel, but I did not start the engine.

I took my phone. I opened Luka’s number. Then the police number. Then Luka’s number again.

Should I call? Should I shout? Should I go in and throw everyone out?

But then Rose would declare herself the victim, and the family would blame me for “creating drama over one party.”

I looked at the house in the mirror. Mother’s embroidered curtains could be seen through the window. A small bird was embroidered on one of them with red thread. As a child, I slept beside it.

Then I realized that I was not simply angry.

They were touching my mother’s memories.

“Enough,” I whispered and put the phone into my pocket.

I started the car, but I did not go far from the house. I stopped at the bend in the lake road and watched the darkness for several minutes. Then I called my old acquaintance, the lawyer Nino.

“Mariam, what happened at this hour?” she asked.

“I want you to be free tomorrow morning. And I need one more thing.”

“What?”

I tightened my fingers around the steering wheel.

“I want to know how to return everything so that this time no one can tell me it is my fault.”

Nino paused.

“Do you have any evidence?”

I looked at the house once more. Rose’s shadow appeared by a second-floor window. She raised her hand, as if saying goodbye to someone.

“Not yet,” I told her. “But I will have it soon.”

Nino told me to come to her office in the morning and tell her everything. When I returned home, I found Luka waiting for me in the living room. He immediately noticed that something was wrong.

“Where were you?”

“At Mother’s house.”

“Alone?”

I put the bag on the table.

“No.”

Luka stood up.

“What does no mean?”

I looked straight at him.

“Your sister is holding a party there.”

Surprise flashed across his face first, then irritation replaced it.

“Rose? Mariam, perhaps you mixed something up.”

“You will come with me tomorrow morning.”

“Why should I go now?”

“Because you also need to see what I saw there.”

I hardly slept that night. At six in the morning Nino sent me her address and one short message: “Do not call anyone. Do not act yet.”

But at eight in the morning, when I entered Nino’s office, a thin brown folder was already lying on her desk. At the sight of it, Nino stood up, locked the door, and quietly told me:

“Before you open this, you should know that after this no one will be able to protect Rose…”

“Before you open this, you should know that after this no one will be able to protect Rose…” Nino repeated.

The folder lay on the desk, and dried water stains could be seen along its edges. The first thing I noticed inside was my mother’s small copper key fob, shaped like a lake, with the letter “M” engraved on it.

“This belonged to Mother,” I said.

“I know. Two years ago, while sorting her things, we found it together.”

“Why is it here now?”

Nino did not answer me. She pushed the folder toward me, but before I touched it, the phone rang.

It was Luka.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“With Nino.”

“Rose says that you ran away from the house and are now humiliating her in front of everyone.”

“I did not run away from the house. I saw what she did.”

“It was only a party, Mariam.”

“There is wine spilled on the ceiling.”

Silence fell.

“Rose will clean everything up.”

“No, Luka. This time she will not clean it up.”

Nino signaled with her eyes that I should end the conversation.

“I will return home in the evening,” I told my husband.

“Mariam, please, do not destroy the family over one house.”

“This house is older than the family. And you know very well what it means to me.”

I hung up.

Nino exhaled deeply.

“Now tell me everything, from the beginning. Where did you keep the keys?”

“On the shelf in the hallway.”

“Did another key exist?”

“I had left one copy with Luka, for emergencies.”

Nino put the pen on the desk.

“Luka says he lost the copy two years ago.”

Something broke inside me.

“He never told me that.”

“And who told Rose about the party?”

“I do not know.”

Nino turned on the computer, and opened a local registration page on the screen. Rose’s public announcement was visible there: “The lake house is ready for private evenings. Places are limited.”

There were photographs too.

Mother’s house. My yard. The balcony railing. The kitchen window.

“This was posted yesterday,” Nino said. “The guests were paying money.”

For a while I could not speak. Then I noticed one number on the screen and felt cold in my stomach.

“How many people were invited?”

“At least forty-two.”

“And I thought she was having a birthday.”

“Perhaps the birthday was only a reason.”

Nino took out a second document.

It was a copy of my mother’s will, prepared two years earlier. I knew the house had been left to me, but I had never examined the document to the end. At that time my attention had been focused only on the funeral and the children.

“There is one clause here that you have never paid attention to,” Nino told me.

“What clause?”

“The right to use the house may be transferred to someone else only with your written consent. If someone uses the house without permission for commercial purposes, the owner may immediately demand compensation for damages and restrict access.”

“Why did Mother write this?”

Nino looked away.

“Probably because she knew whom she was dealing with.”

That same day we went to the lake house. It was only noon, but traces of the previous night’s party were everywhere. The air smelled of sweet alcohol and spilled grease. Broken glasses lay on the balcony.

We found Rose in the living room. Today she was no longer wearing the glittering crown. Her hair was uncombed, but she still tried to keep a confident smile on her face.

“You came so suddenly?” she said to us.

“This is my house,” I answered.

“It is our family’s house.”

“No. Mother left it to me.”

!!!  ჩემს ბინაში უცნობებს მოჰყავდათ, ხოლო როცა წინააღმდეგი გავხდი, ქმარმა მოულოდნელად შეწყვიტა ღიმილი

Rose looked at the bottles scattered across the floor.

“The guests were a little noisy. There is no need to worry about it.”

Nino took out her phone.

“Your announcement said that the guests were paying money.”

Rose’s smile disappeared.

“What announcement are you talking about?”

“This one,” I said and showed her the screen.

She did not touch the phone.

“Someone used my name.”

“Did someone use your photographs too?” Nino asked.

Rose was silent for a moment.

Luka stood behind me. He had not said a word the whole way. Now he looked coldly at his sister.

“Rose, what did you do?”

“Nothing that Mariam should not be able to forgive me.”

“She did not give you permission,” Luka said.

“But you told me to take the key.”

The air in the room froze.

Luka raised his face.

“I told her where it was. I did not tell her to hold a party.”

Rose immediately stepped back.

“Do not put everything on me now.”

Nino looked toward the window. Beneath it was a small black device attached to the wall.

“Does this still work?” she asked me.

“What?”

“Your mother’s security system. You told me you turned it on last summer.”

I went over and touched the device. A green light came on.

Nino took a small memory card from her bag.

“The cameras store new video for twelve hours. If the recording was not deleted, we have everything.”

The color drained from Rose’s face.

“You could not have filmed inside my house.”

“This is not your house,” I said.

Nino bent toward the device and removed the card. Then she opened her laptop.

The first footage from the previous evening appeared on the screen. The door opened. Rose entered. She held only a bag, but after a few seconds she looked back, as if making sure no one was watching.

Then something appeared on the camera that neither Luka nor I expected to see…

Then something appeared on the camera that neither Luka nor I expected to see.

Rose had not entered alone.

A tall man in a dark coat stood behind her. He locked the door, took an envelope from his pocket, and handed it to Rose. Rose unfolded the paper, read it, and folded it again with a laugh.

Luka moved closer to the screen.

“Who is this?”

Rose did not answer.

In the video, the man photographed the walls of the living room, then entered the kitchen and touched my mother’s old cupboards. Rose, meanwhile, was writing something on her phone. Nino stopped the frame and enlarged it.

Her message appeared on the screen: “The house is ready. The owner will not find out until morning.”

Luka’s jaw tightened.

“Mariam, this is no longer just a party.”

“I know.”

Rose looked toward me.

“That man did nothing wrong here.”

“Then why did he photograph every room in the house?”

“He was supposed to have the guest list.”

Nino played the video again. After a while the man followed Rose into the yard. The camera’s microphone recorded their conversation clearly.

“If we cannot sign the contract by tomorrow, you will return my money,” the man said.

“We will sign it,” Rose answered. “Mariam cannot sell the house if she does not learn that it has already been booked.”

I could hear the sound of blood in my ears.

“What does ‘booked’ mean?” I asked.

Rose lowered her eyes.

Nino closed the laptop.

“This no longer needs an explanation from us. The video is enough.”

“No,” Rose said. “You did not understand. I only took an advance. I did not think he would get so angry with me.”

“Who?” Luka asked.

“That man.”

“How much did you take?”

Rose bit her lips.

“Five thousand.”

Luka stepped back.

“Five thousand dollars?”

“It was an advance. For organizing the event.”

“You were renting out my wife’s house?”

“You also told me Mariam would eventually give you permission.”

“I never said that.”

“Not literally.”

At that moment I realized that Luka was not entirely innocent in everything. He knew where the key was. He had not stopped Rose. Perhaps he simply wanted to avoid a problem, but silence also had its price.

Nino opened the folder and placed the last page of my mother’s will on the table.

“Now you must understand the main thing,” she said. “Your mother did not leave this house only to Mariam. She specifically wrote that any commercial use of the house is illegal unless the owner approves it in writing.”

!!!  Part 4 — They refused to allocate money for my operation, but that same evening they gave my sister my horse — my brother put down a document and Father turned pale

Rose looked at the paper.

“What does this change?”

“Everything. Yesterday’s party, the money received, the promised event, and the people brought into the house become one body of evidence.”

Nino opened the laptop again and this time played a second video.

In the footage Rose stood in the kitchen. In her hands she held an old clay jar belonging to my mother, in which Mother collected coins. Rose was telling the man:

“If this house is not sold, I will still get what is mine. Mariam has money, but she will not take care of this place. She is emotional. In the end she will call me herself.”

In the video the man asked her:

“And if she refuses?”

Rose laughed.

“Then I will turn the family against her. Her husband will be on my side.”

Luka slowly looked at me.

“Mariam, I…”

“Do not say anything yet.”

Rose sank into the armchair. In front of her lay my mother’s embroidered pillow, and a drop of champagne slowly ran down the fabric.

“This recording is illegal,” she said.

Nino answered calmly:

“The owner of a house may use a recording from her own property’s security system. Especially when the recording reflects unauthorized commercial use of the property.”

“I will not allow this.”

“You already allowed it.”

Nino put the phone on the table. The police station’s number was visible on the screen, but she had not called yet.

“Mariam, it is your decision what the next step will be.”

I went to the window. The lake looked calm, as if nothing had happened in this house. Mother always said that water keeps everything a person does not notice on its surface.

“I do not want her arrested,” I said quietly. “I want no one to enter the house without my permission. I want her to compensate for the damage. And I want everyone to know the truth.”

Rose raised her head.

“Mariam, please. I am your family.”

“Family does not steal keys.”

Luka lowered his eyes.

“Rose, you must come with me and tell me everything. When did you start planning this?”

Rose fell silent.

Nino opened another file from the memory card. Its name was marked with a date and time. The video lasted only a few seconds.

The tall man could be seen in the footage, talking on the phone.

“No, the house is not being sold yet,” he said. “But the owner has another problem. If the document comes out, she may not be able to remain in this house at all.”

Nino stopped the video.

“The document?” I asked.

This time Rose looked up sharply.

Luka’s face turned pale.

Nino told me quietly:

“Mariam, the copy of your mother’s will is not complete. The main page is still kept by the notary. And this morning the notary called me. She said your mother had left one more thing for you.”

“What?”

Nino was about to answer, but her phone rang. She looked at the screen and immediately fell silent.

The caller was the notary.

Nino answered.

“Yes, Ms. Elene… I am with her now… no, we have not told her anything yet…”

The surprise on her face slowly turned into concern.

Then Nino pressed the phone to her ear and looked at me.

“Mariam, your mother had a second will. And today someone requested it from the notary’s office…”
