Part 4 — My daughter-in-law rented my mother’s lake house for a party, but after my calm response my husband stopped speaking

“Mariam, your mother had a second will. And today someone requested it from the notary’s office…”

Nino’s voice broke off.

Only the ticking of the old wall clock could be heard in the room. Rose froze in the armchair. Luka looked at her, but this time he offered neither protection nor justification.

“Who requested it?” I asked.

Nino slowly lowered the phone.

“Rose. With her identity card.”

Rose jumped up.

“That is a lie!”

“The notary has a record,” Nino answered. “You were in her office this morning.”

“I went only for information.”

“Why did you say that you were the heir?”

Rose’s face changed.

Luka grabbed the chair.

“You told her you were the heir?”

“I just wanted to find out what was written in the document.”

“In my sister’s name?”

“Mariam did not deserve this house as much as I did anyway. Your mother cared about me too.”

At those words I imagined my mother’s face: white hair, warm hands when I had a fever as a child, and her habit of placing a glass full of water on the windowsill every morning.

Nino called the police.

Rose immediately took out her phone.

“I will call my lawyer myself.”

“Call him,” I said.

She dialed the number. Within a few seconds her confidence fell apart.

“David, you have to come… no, she has not left yet… they have the recording…”

A loud voice came from the other side. We could not make out the words, but Rose’s face said everything.

“No, it cannot be like this. You told me it was only a private party.”

The voice sounded again.

Rose moved the phone away from her ear.

“He told me he cannot get involved in the case,” she said.

Nino replied calmly:

“Because he already knows how serious the situation is.”

The police arrived in forty minutes. Two officers entered the yard, where plastic cups and pieces of broken bottles still lay scattered. One of them stepped on my mother’s old gardening shears. He immediately picked them up and put them aside.

“Do not move this item,” I said.

“I understand,” he answered.

Rose explained everything to the officers as a “family misunderstanding.”

“Mariam is angry because the birthday turned out noisy.”

Nino handed over the recordings.

When Rose’s own voice sounded in the room, she fell silent for the first time.

“Mariam has money, but she will not take care of this place. In the end she will call me herself.”

Her voice sounded strange in the room. The living Rose stood on one side, while her own words came from the other.

Rose closed her eyes.

“Turn it off.”

The officer shook his head.

“This is important evidence.”

“I did not say it like that.”

“That is exactly what you said,” I told her.

For the first time she looked at me the way a person looks at a door that can no longer be opened.

The notary Elene also arrived. She was holding a heavy leather bag. From the bag she took a document certified with my mother’s signature.

“Your mother prepared this six months before her death,” she told me. “It is not a second will, but an explanatory letter.”

“Why did I not know?”

“She asked me to give it to you only if someone claimed rights to the house or tried to use it.”

I opened the document.

I recognized Mother’s handwriting immediately. The letters leaned slightly to the right, as they did when she was tired.

“I leave the house to Mariam because I know that she will protect it not as walls, but as memories. If someone takes away her choice, Mariam must not begin a fight to prove that she has the right to her own life. She must simply lock the door.”

My hands began to tremble.

At the end of the document there was another clause: in the event of any unauthorized commercial use of the house, full financial responsibility would be placed on the person who brought in the guests or received the benefit.

Rose said quietly:

“She knew about me.”

“Mother knew that sometimes people perceive love as a right,” I answered.

That same evening the police took Rose to the station for questioning. No one applauded. I was not happy either. I was only tired.

Luka remained with me in the yard.

“Mariam, I have to tell you…”

“I know that you told her where the key was.”

“I thought she would just bring a few friends.”

“And when you realized?”

He looked at the lake.

“I was afraid a conflict would begin in the family.”

“So you sacrificed my house.”

“No, I did not want to sacrifice your house.”

“But you chose silence.”

Luka’s eyes filled with tears.

“Can you forgive me?”

I did not answer for a long time.

“Maybe someday. But forgiveness does not mean that I will let you back into the place where you once left my trust.”

The next day I changed the locks. I put the old keys into a small glass jar and attached Mother’s lake-shaped copper fob to it. I remembered that object from childhood; Mother used to say that the shape of water would not let the house lose its way.

Rose’s lawyer returned part of the advance she had received without going to court, because he no longer wanted to remain involved in the case. The remaining amount was counted toward Rose’s compensation for damages. Cleaning the house took several days.

The most difficult thing was washing the pillows.

The champagne stain would not come out of one of them. The small bird embroidered by Mother’s hand could barely be seen beneath the stain. For a long time I wondered whether to throw it away.

I could not throw it away.

Four weeks later I went to the lake house alone. It was a November morning. Almost all the leaves had already fallen from the trees, and a thin mist lay on the surface of the water.

The living room was empty when I arrived.

Mother’s pillows were no longer on the sofa. Only one photograph remained on the wall—me, eight years old, beside Mother, with cups of hot cocoa in both our hands.

In the kitchen I installed new shelves. I arranged the cups in the same order Mother used. I placed a glass full of water on the windowsill.

This time I did it myself.

A few days later Niko and Ana came with me. Niko made a small wooden boat and left it in the yard. Ana drew a lake and mountains on the window with colored paper.

“Mom, will we live here sometimes again?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Will Rose come too?”

Ana looked at me with such a serious face, as if the fate of the whole house depended on her answer.

“Only if she knocks on the door and we invite her.”

“And if she does not knock?”

“Then the door will be locked.”

Niko placed the wooden boat on the table.

“Mom, are you happy now?”

I looked at the lake through the window.

“For the first time in a long while, I am at peace.”

In December Luka finally left our apartment. The divorce process ended peacefully. He often wrote to me, and sometimes sent long messages saying that he had changed everything and wanted one more chance.

One evening he sent me this letter: “Can I enter the house just once? I only want to stand in the place where I destroyed everything.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote to him: “You already know where the house is. But this time I am no longer where you left me.”

!!!  Mi madre cumplía años cuando su novio volvió a irse antes del postre, pero al regresar mi hija, él palideció

I wrote nothing more.

Rose moved to another city after several months. In agreement with the police, the case did not result in additional charges because she compensated for the damage and canceled the false announcements. But the family members eventually learned the truth.

Some people apologized.

Some people justified themselves.

I no longer chased after anyone.

I turned Mother’s house into a small studio. Twice a week I taught children to draw there. Niko made wooden objects, and Ana gave everyone small drawings of the lake.

In spring, the flowers Mother had planted bloomed again. Some branches had dried, but the roots turned out to be alive.

One morning I opened the drawer of the old chest. The small copper key fob that I had seen in Nino’s folder was still there. Mother once told me that things have their own stories, but we must return meaning to them.

I attached the fob to the ring of the new key.

Then I locked the door.

This time I did not do it out of fear.

It was my choice.

The first snow began outside. White flakes fell on the balcony railing, in the same place where I found the broken glasses after Rose’s party.

Inside, Ana’s laughter could be heard.

And I sat on Mother’s embroidered pillow, held the little copper lake in my hand, and realized for the first time that a house returns to you when you hear the sound of your own peace inside it.

The door locked.

The house was mine again.

Missed the beginning?
