Part 4 — My husband assigned me to serve in London, but after my calm answer Jessica’s smile slowly disappeared

The telephone froze in my hand.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The woman exhaled.

“My name is Elene. Eleven years ago I worked with Tom. Even then he tried to hide assets. Your son, Daniel, accidentally heard his conversation, and Tom met him at a warehouse this evening.”

“Where is Daniel?”

“He is still alive. But do not go alone.”

The call ended.

I looked at Tom.

“Where did you meet my son?”

Tom stood up, but Arthur blocked his way to the door.

“I do not know what you are talking about.”

“This time your lie will no longer work,” I said.

Jessica looked at Tom.

“You told me you would only talk to the boy.”

Tom quickly looked toward her.

“Be quiet.”

“Why?” Jessica’s voice trembled. “You told me he had found some recording and that we had to get it back.”

That was the moment their agreement shattered. Neither love nor loyalty remained. Only fear.

Arthur called the police, while I dialed Daniel’s number. The call rang twice and stopped.

A message came immediately: Mom, do not come home.

Then a second one: I will come myself.

“Is that from Daniel’s number?” Arthur asked.

“Yes.”

“No,” he said. “The location of his phone is at the old warehouse.”

Tom suddenly struck the table with his hand.

“You cannot prove anything against me!”

“You proved it yourself,” I said, and turned on the recording.

His voice sounded in the room again: “Rachel will sign for me. She does not even know what she owns. When we get to London, everything will be transferred to me.”

Tom listened to his own words. For the first time he could not escape his own voice.

“I did not mean it that way,” he whispered.

“But you said it.”

“I was just joking.”

“People do not steal company money as a joke.”

That same night we went to the warehouse. A cold wind was blowing on the outskirts of the city. The iron door smelled of rust. Police officers were already waiting outside.

!!!  Mi esposo exigió que siguiera pagando su escapada romántica, pero cuando llamé desde el hotel su sonrisa desapareció

We found Daniel in the back room. His hands were tied, but he was conscious. When he saw me, he stood up and ran toward me.

“Mom, I am sorry that I came here.”

“You are guilty of nothing.”

He wrapped his arms around my neck. His jacket was steeped in the smell of smoke and dust.

Tom was standing several steps away.

“I only wanted the family to leave together,” he said.

Daniel raised his head.

“A family does not leave together for a place where one person is considered a slave.”

Tom could not find an answer.

The police put handcuffs on him. Jessica stood by the wall and cried.

“Rachel, please,” Tom said. “Do twenty-five years mean nothing?”

“They mean exactly that, and that is why I will no longer let you take another year from me.”

His lawyer called me the next day.

“Mr. Tom is ready for an agreement,” he told me. “If you withdraw the complaint, we will return part of the money to you.”

“Which money?”

“The money he used.”

“Everything will be returned. But not at the price of my silence.”

The lawyer was silent for a long time.

“He thinks you still love him.”

“Love does not mean hiding a crime.”

“Then there will be no agreement.”

“Nor do I want one.”

Three weeks later, at the preliminary court hearing, Tom heard the recording in full for the first time. Wooden benches creaked in the courtroom. The judge turned on the sound, and Tom’s old confident tone struck against the walls.

“Rachel will sign for me. She does not even know what she owns.”

The recording ended.

Tom leaned forward.

“Please, it concerned something else.”

The judge looked at him.

“Then explain what you meant.”

Tom opened his mouth, but he no longer had any words.

Jessica testified to the investigation. She confirmed every detail of the payments, gifts, and London apartment. Tom partially admitted the crime, although he still shifted the responsibility onto me.

!!!  Me dieron por muerto y cerraron mi ataúd, pero cuando mi hermana gritó, mi esposa dejó de sonreír

“She could have said who she was,” he declared.

I listened from the other side of the courtroom.

“She hid her wealth.”

These words sounded strange. As if the crime were my wealth and not his betrayal.

In the end, Tom was sentenced to imprisonment for fraud and misappropriation of company funds. Jessica received a suspended sentence and was ordered to return the injured party’s money.

I did not wait for their punishment.

After the court I returned home. I opened the door of their room. Only several hangers remained in the wardrobe. Tom’s suitcase, which he had prepared for London, stood by the wall. A small elephant-shaped luggage tag, which we had bought on our first trip twenty-five years ago, still hung on it.

All these years I had thought it was our shared memory.

Now it remained only as a small plastic object.

Three months later I moved with Daniel to a seaside town. Managing the holding was difficult at first, but for the first time I no longer had to hide my surname at work. At seven in the morning I went to the office, sat by the window, and listened to the employees without anyone expecting service from me.

Daniel changed schools. In the evenings we prepared dinner together in the kitchen. Once he attached a drawing to the refrigerator: two people beside a small house, and a large sun above them.

“Is this us?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Where is Tom?”

Daniel shrugged.

“Where he chose to be.”

The first snow came in December. A thin white layer settled on the balcony railing. I made hot tea and took the old elephant-shaped luggage tag out of the drawer.

Several weeks later I received a letter from Tom.

Rachel, I understand everything. I want to start again. Without you I do not understand who I am.

I held the letter in my hand for a long time. Earlier, such words would have awakened guilt in my heart. Now I felt only tiredness.

!!!  Mein Mann setzte mich bei der Gala von seinem Tisch weg und dankte mir vor vierhundert Gästen für mein Verständnis – dann erstarrte er

I wrote him a reply.

“I hope that one day you find yourself. But I will not return to the life where I had to hide myself so that you could feel like an important man.”

Daniel asked me whether I had sent it.

“Yes.”

“Does your heart hurt?”

I stood by the window. Snow was quietly falling onto the street.

“My heart hurt when I thought I had to sacrifice myself to save him.”

“Now?”

“Now I am home.”

That night I placed the small elephant-shaped luggage tag on the windowsill. In the morning light its scratches appeared, just as on our old trip.

But for the first time this object no longer reminded me of the past.

It reminded me that every journey has a moment when there is no longer any need to return.

And for the first time I was not going alone.

Missed the beginning?
