Part 4 — I Submitted My Resignation Letter, but My Boss Locked the Door — Then His Question Frightened Him for the First Time

The screen went dark, and only the sound of rain remained in the room.

Vincent stood motionless for several seconds.

Then the phone rang.

“Don’t answer,” I said.

“It could be the police.”

“The police do not call like that.”

He picked it up anyway.

“Vincent Romano.”

Gideon’s voice came from the other side.

“You thought you beat me with a recording? The bank codes, the security people, and half the city are with me.”

Vincent listened silently.

“You locked the door,” Gideon continued. “But now you are the one trapped inside.”

Vincent switched the phone to speaker.

I turned on the recording device.

“Repeat it,” I said.

Gideon fell silent.

“Repeat what?”

“The last sentence.”

“Harper, do not interfere.”

“I have already interfered.”

Vincent looked at me. For the first time I saw on his face not power, but fear that his own words could no longer be hidden.

Marco shouted from the other side of the door:

“Raise your hands! Law enforcement has surrounded the building!”

Gideon’s men looked at one another. One put his gun on the floor. The other tried to escape, but heavy footsteps were already sounding in the corridor.

Vincent said to Gideon:

“This is over.”

“You cannot sacrifice me.”

“I am not sacrificing you. You recorded everything yourself.”

“We are family!”

“That is exactly why I trusted you.”

The door opened. Law-enforcement officers entered, aimed their weapons at the criminals, and handcuffed everyone. Gideon shouted until the very last moment that Vincent could not exist without him.

Vincent no longer answered.

In the morning his lawyer refused to represent him. Marco sent the second file to the bank—audio recordings, money movements, and restored images from the security cameras. The documents showed that Gideon had been stealing money from the company for months and creating debts in Vincent’s name.

Vincent looked at my letter.

“It says here that you are leaving in the morning.”

“Yes.”

“Stay. I will change everything.”

“You must change, but not because of me.”

“I love you, Harper.”

Those words came four years too late.

And I was already so tired that I no longer had any hope in them.

“I know,” I said. “But love is not enough when a person notices your existence only after losing you.”

The law-enforcement officers took Gideon away. The sound of his shoes in the corridor slowly disappeared.

Vincent was left alone.

That same morning, the door of his office was open for the first time. My letter lay on the desk, and beside it was the silver clasp of my green wool scarf. He had picked it up from the floor and placed it in a small glass cup.

The room looked strangely empty.

My chair was no longer there. Nor did my notes hang on the wall. By the coffee machine there remained only a small white cup, with a thin crack on its handle.

“Take this,” he said to me.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because everything I left here belongs to this building.”

I went down in the elevator and did not look back.

Three weeks later I rented a small apartment in a seaside town. There was no forty-second floor there, no hidden doors, and no security that counted every step.

In the mornings I helped a small transportation company organize documents. My desk stood by the window. From the window I could see the harbor cranes, and the smell of salt came in the morning.

In the first days, every ring of the phone frightened me.

Then I realized that silence was not danger.

It was freedom.

Six months later my sister, Lea, came to visit me with her seven-year-old son, Noah. The boy spread a sheet of paper on the kitchen table and drew two doors with pencils.

“Which door is this?” I asked.

“This is the old life,” he answered. “And this is the new one.”

“Why doesn’t the new one have a lock?”

Noah shrugged.

“Because whoever you want can come inside.”

I fell silent at this answer.

That evening I smiled for the first time without having to gather strength for it.

Vincent contacted me twice. The first time he sent me a letter. The second time he called me himself.

“I only want five minutes,” he told me.

“You already had four years.”

“I have changed.”

“I hope that is true.”

“Don’t you want to know how the case ended?”

“I know everything.”

“Then why aren’t you coming back?”

I stood by the window. Outside, the first snow was falling and landing on the sidewalk as small white spots.

“Because returning is not the same as forgiving.”

There was a long silence on the other side.

“Do you still love me?” he asked at last.

I closed my eyes.

The truth was difficult. Love does not disappear in one day. But it no longer had the right to control my life.

“I may have loved you,” I answered. “But now I love myself better.”

“Harper…”

“Goodbye, Vincent.”

I ended the call.

That night I attached Noah’s drawing to the refrigerator. Two doors stood beside each other. One had a heavy lock. The other had an open sky.

Then I took the silver clasp out of the drawer. For four years it had been a small sign of my fear. Now it had become an ordinary thing—a gift from my mother, a memory of my first day at work, a past that could no longer hold me.

I fastened the clasp to the new scarf.

I opened the window.

Cold air came in, but this time I was not afraid.

A lock was no longer needed.

Missed the beginning?
