When the Mafia Boss Joked About My Plain Appearance, My Face at Dinner Made His Laughter Suddenly Disappear

Six men were laughing in Luka Moretti’s office that evening when I realized that humiliating me was no longer simply entertainment for him—it was a trap.

But they did not know that I had already set the trap.

A few minutes remained until eight in the evening. In the private hall of the restaurant “Aurelio,” golden chandeliers shone, while the sound of the piano traveled along the walls. The smells of tobacco, wood, and expensive alcohol mixed in the air.

Marco Bellini raised his glass.

“I bet ten dollars she is wearing that same gray jacket again.”

Those sitting at the table laughed.

Luka Moretti only raised the corner of his lips. One place beside him was empty. They had left that place for me, as if I were not a guest but part of the evening’s performance.

“Maybe she will bring a calculator too,” one man said.

“No,” Marco replied. “Today she will only have to count the glasses.”

The waiter took hold of the door handle.

The cold autumn air brought the clean smell of rain into the hall. Then I entered.

The black velvet dress reflected the light of the chandeliers as it moved, as if I had calculated every step in advance. My hair fell over my shoulders. I wore a silver watch on my wrist.

And I was still wearing my glasses.

Those glasses were the reason for their mockery. This time I did not take them off. I did not want to become a beautiful woman fitted for someone else. I simply was no longer going to hide.

The laughter at the table stopped.

Marco’s glass froze in the air.

“Mrs. Carter?” he barely said.

“Good evening, Marco.”

Luka did not stand up. His gaze followed me from head to toe, then stopped at my glasses.

“Sit down, Evelyn.”

“Thank you, but I cannot stay long.”

“Why?” Marco smiled again. “You did not like our company?”

“Your company is exactly as I expected.”

His smile disappeared.

I sat down in the empty chair. Under the table, I pressed my fingers together so that no one would see how fast my heart was beating. For six years I had arranged every secret for these men, scheduled every meeting, checked every transfer.

And they thought I only poured coffee.

Luka poured me wine.

“You are especially elegant today.”

“Today I dressed for the first time the way I wanted.”

Marco quietly chuckled.

“And still, your glasses remained.”

“Yes. They see more than you think.”

A heavy silence fell on the table. I took a small ivory bookmark from my bag. My mother had given it to me six years earlier. A golden moon was engraved on its corner. I always had it with me when I had to make a difficult decision.

Luka’s eyes stopped on the object.

“What is that?”

“A reminder.”

“Of what?”

“That every page has an ending.”

At that moment the waiter put down the plates. Marco leaned toward me.

“I hope you have not discovered another mistake for us today.”

“I discovered one.”

His face tightened.

Luka placed his fingers on a silver lighter.

“You did not come here to discuss that.”

“You invited me.”

“Then enjoy the dinner.”

I placed my hand on the bag.

“The dinner is already over, Luka.”

When he called me by my name for the first time, something resembling fear flashed in his eyes, though he immediately concealed it.

“What do you mean?”

I took a black folder from the bag. It was exactly like the ones I placed in his office every day. Only this time my ivory bookmark lay on the folder.

Marco straightened in his chair.

“What the hell is this?”

“What you two failed to notice for six years.”

Luka slowly reached toward the folder. His fingers approached the clasp, and I held my breath, because I knew that the next second would change everything…

Luka’s fingers stopped on the clasp.

“Open it,” I said.

“Are you giving me orders?”

“No. I just want you to see it with your own hands.”

Marco stood up, and the chair slid loudly across the floor.

“Luka, this woman is threatening you.”

“Sit down, Marco.”

For the first time, there was no laughter in his voice.

The folder opened. On the first page was the number I had shown during the day—one hundred eighty thousand dollars, transferred for a shipment that had never arrived at the port.

Marco looked at the sheet and immediately went pale.

“This is forged.”

“Then why is your signature on it?” I asked.

Luka picked up the sheet. The edge of the paper trembled between his fingers.

“Where did you find this?”

“Where you never looked. In your own records.”

On the second page was a list of transfers. On the third page was a letter from the head of port security. Luka was reading, while Marco kept looking toward the door.

“Who are you?” Luka asked quietly.

I took off my glasses and placed them on the table.

“The woman you considered an ordinary secretary for six years.”

Outside, the rain knocked harder against the windows. At that moment my phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

On the other end, a man said only one sentence:

“Mrs. Carter, they are already in the building…”

And heavy silence fell on the line.

The voice disappeared from the phone, but everyone at the table heard the last words.

“Who is in the building?” Luka asked.

“People who did not come to your company this evening to count anything.”

Marco headed toward the door, but stopped after two steps. Heavy footsteps could be heard from outside the hall. The piano was no longer playing.

I took a small voice recorder from the folder and placed it on the table. The red light of the black device was blinking.

Marco’s face changed.

“What does this mean?”

“That during the day I was checking more than just numbers.”

I pressed the recorder.

First my voice was heard.

“The transfer was made twice. Receipt of the shipment is not confirmed.”

Then Luka’s voice was heard, calm and tired:

“Close the page, Evelyn.”

My answer followed in the recording.

“If the money disappeared, the page cannot be closed.”

Marco’s voice came on.

“If you let this woman stick her nose into our affairs one more time, the problem will be solved forever.”

Someone in the room breathed heavily.

Luka slowly turned toward Marco.

“Did you say that?”

“It is cut out of context.”

“It is your voice.”

“You were there too!”

There was no blood left in Luka’s face. As for me, the six years of fear accumulated in my chest came loose for the first time, though I still did not feel calm.

“Luka, you knew about the transfers,” I said. “Marco was taking the money, and you were looking the other way.”

“I did not know how far it went.”

“You knew enough to turn my warning into a joke.”

Three distinct knocks sounded on the door.

Marco reached for his weapon, but Luka grabbed him by the wrist.

“Don’t you dare.”

“They came to kill me!”

“No,” I said. “They came to bring your words to living people.”

The door opened. Two investigators in black coats and their chief entered. Behind them stood the head of port security, holding a sealed box.

“Evelyn Carter?” the chief asked.

“Yes.”

“Do you have your testimony and all the documents ready?”

“Everything.”

Luka turned toward me.

“Were you an investigator?”

“An investigator of financial crimes. Six years ago I came here under a false name, because your accounts were already being robbed then.”

Marco chuckled, but his voice broke.

“Six years? That is impossible.”

“You thought impossible only what you could not see behind the glasses.”

The sealed box was opened. Inside were recordings taken from the port cameras and the original shipping documents. In the footage, Marco could be seen entering the warehouse at night and boxes being taken out in the same trucks that officially left the port empty.

Luka looked at the screen.

“Was this happening with my authorization?”

“With your electronic signature,” the investigator replied.

“I did not sign it.”

“But you created the system that made it possible.”

At that moment my phone rang again. This time the call was from my mother’s house. Before I answered, an unknown woman whispered on the line:

“Carter, if you want to see your mother alive, leave the restaurant alone.”

The entire hall disappeared before my eyes.

Luka heard those words before I did. His face hardened, but he still did not know that the most dangerous part of Marco’s plan was only beginning…
