They Were About to Throw Me Out of the Hospital for a Friend When the Wounded Billionaire Said My Name and His Fiancée Lost Her Color

At the moment when two guards were dragging me toward the hospital doors, the wounded Mateo Valdes opened his eyes and uttered my name.

“Alma.”

Everyone in the room fell silent. I, however, looked toward his fingers, which were searching for me in the air with a tremble.

I was Alma Reyes, a thirty-year-old emergency nurse at Guadalajara’s Saint Lucia Hospital. Mateo Valdes was the man at the sound of whose name politicians raised their voices, while businessmen locked their doors. Officially, he ran a transportation company. Unofficially, his truck routes carried many things that were written in no account.

Thirty-six hours earlier, I was eating salty crackers in the break room when the emergency doors opened with such force that it seemed as if someone had set the building on fire.

Outside, rain pounded the asphalt. Two stretchers were rolled in.

Mateo lay on the first one—covered in blood, shards of glass, and smoke. A bullet was lodged near his ribs, and his right hand was burned.

A boy of about five lay on the second one. He was unconscious and held a small black obsidian cross in his hand as if it were the last thread of life.

“A car exploded on the outskirts!” the paramedic shouted. “It looks like an ambush!”

The Valdes family crest engraved on Mateo’s ring was enough to change the entire department. Security guards sealed the corridors, administrators came down, and the surgeon who had not answered even after three calls appeared running.

I did not think about his surname. The man was bleeding, and the child was having difficulty breathing.

Before surgery, Mateo grabbed me by the wrist.

“The child… no one must find out.”

“He is alive,” I told him.

The line on the monitor accelerated.

“No one,” he repeated, and lost consciousness.

Seven minutes later Renata Alcaraz arrived. She wore white high heels, had an expensive jacket thrown over her shoulders, and was followed by four armed men. She did not look like a frightened fiancée. She looked more like someone checking whether her plan had been completed.

Her gaze immediately found the boy’s stretcher.

“Who is he?”

I stepped in front of the child.

“An unidentified minor patient for now.”

Renata smiled.

“Nurse, do not confuse your job with your importance.”

Several hours later, the boy woke up and sat up crying.

“Daddy… the car was burning… bad woman…”

“Which woman?”

The sound of white heels rang in the corridor. The boy immediately clutched my uniform.

Renata appeared from behind the curtain.

“What is his name?” she asked.

“The patient’s information is protected.”

“Do you know who I am?”

“That is precisely why I will not tell you.”

The smile disappeared from her face.

When she left, the boy told me quietly:

“Emiliano Valdes.”

The floor shifted beneath my feet. He was Mateo’s secret son—the heir whose existence his fiancée was not supposed to know about.

I made the most dangerous decision. I changed his location in the system, transferred him to the children’s department, and hid him for protection with an elderly nurse, Lidia, whom I had once helped.

At dawn, the hospital’s top floor looked like occupied territory. Black cars stood outside, armed men were in the elevators, and among the white roses sent for Mateo I noticed one small black dot.

A camera.

I took the bouquet into the restroom and ran water over it until the dot stopped blinking.

When I came outside, Renata was waiting for me.

“Where are my flowers?”

“There was something there that should not have been near the patient.”

Her father, Hector Alcaraz, stood by the window. In the corner, Mateo’s uncle, Julian Valdes, silently watched us.

Renata came so close that I smelled her sharp perfume.

“You are only a nurse in cheap shoes. When Mateo wakes up, he will not even remember your face.”

Then she raised her hand. The guards seized me by the arms.

I did not resist. Emiliano was hiding two floors below, and I knew one shout would be enough for everyone to start asking questions.

“Take her out,” Renata ordered. “And make sure she can never work here again.”

They had almost brought me to the door when a hoarse voice sounded in the room.

“Alma.”

The guards released me.

Mateo lay pale, barely breathing, but his hand was still extended toward me. I touched his fingers with mine.

“No one will touch her,” he said, looking at Renata.

Then he weakly squeezed my hand.

“Where is my son?”

For the first time, Renata was no longer smiling. At that same moment, Hector took a black folder from the inside pocket of his jacket and extended his hand toward me…

I slapped the folder away, but Hector caught my wrist.

“Open this, and neither the child nor you will leave here alive,” he whispered.

Mateo tried to get up from the bed.

“Let her go.”

Julian immediately locked the doors.

“Nephew, first understand what you are protecting.”

Lidia called me. I could hear the child’s quiet sobbing on the phone.

“Alma, two men downstairs are looking for him. What do we do?”

“Take him to the hospital’s old laundry. Now.”

Renata opened the folder. Inside there was only one sheet of paper and a small memory card.

“Sign, Mateo,” she said. “Otherwise I will tell everyone that this child is not yours.”

Mateo looked at her.

“You already know whose child he is.”

Renata’s face changed.

I remembered the bouquet of roses wet from the water. The camera had not been installed for nothing. Someone wanted to see everything.

“I have a recording,” I said.

Hector smiled at me.

“Not a recording. You die.”

At that moment, heavy footsteps sounded from the corridor. The door shook. Mateo put his hand under his shirt and took out a small key.

“Alma, take this. If I do not make it, open the card in your name.”

The door opened, and a man in a police uniform appeared on the threshold. But relief did not appear on Mateo’s face. On the contrary, for the first time I saw that he, too, was afraid…

The man standing in the doorway was not a policeman. He wore a uniform, but his badge was attached upside down.

Mateo recognized him immediately.

“Santiago, whom do you serve?”

The man drew a gun.

“The one who pays more.”

At that moment, an alarm sounded outside. Lidia had activated the fire alarm in the old laundry. People began shouting in the corridor, and the fake policeman looked back.

I used that one second. I rammed a metal shelf into his shoulder, he stumbled, and Mateo kicked an oxygen cylinder from the bed. The gun fell to the floor.

“Run!” Mateo shouted at me.

I took the folder, the key, and the card. Julian pressed his head against the wall. Renata stood motionless.

“Did you arrange all this?” Mateo asked Renata.

Renata kept a pale smile.

“I only did what was necessary.”

“The explosion of my car?”

“You had to die before the others learned about Emiliano’s existence.”

Such silence fell over the room that the monitor’s clicking sounded like a scream.

!!!  Part 4 — Twelve years after returning home, my sister forbade me to enter, but when a sound rang out from the kitchen, her face turned pale

Hector slapped the folder’s paper.

“Sign, Mateo. I will run the company, Renata will receive your property, and the child will disappear. That was the agreement.”

Julian raised his head.

“I knew too,” he said. “But I thought it was only intimidation.”

Something went out in Mateo’s eyes.

I inserted the card into a small device. The screen lit up. Renata’s voice sounded in the recording, clear and cold:

“The child must also be in the car. If he survives, everything will collapse.”

Then Hector’s voice was added:

“We hid the camera in the flowers. When you get rid of the nurse, we will take the child from the lower floor.”

Renata stepped back.

“This is fake.”

“It is your voice,” I told her.

Mateo lowered his eyes. It was as if he were hearing his own home’s true voice for the first time.

At that moment, the phone rang. The call was to my number. An unknown woman said only one sentence:

“Emiliano is with us. If you want to see him alive, Mateo Valdes must leave this hospital alone…”
