My fiancée failed to turn off her phone while humiliating the maid, and the next morning my father’s face turned strangely pale

That evening I heard my fiancée call dignity foolishness—and she said it to a woman who had to clean our house with her own hands every day.

The call seemed to have ended. Renata’s sweet voice was no longer heard, but the phone’s small green light was still blinking. I was standing on the top floor of the office in Santa Fe, while beyond the window Mexico City’s sky was burning orange.

“All the journalists must come to tomorrow evening,” Renata was saying. “My father wants us to announce the engagement date live.”

Then her voice changed.

“Come here. How many times must I call you?”

I immediately recognized the answering voice. It was Sofia Martinez, the new helper in our house, a twenty-two-year-old girl who always held things carefully, as if she were carrying not valuable objects, but someone else’s trust.

“Yes, Mrs. Renata.”

“Why were you walking through my corridor as if you belonged here?”

“I brought the clothes from the laundry. I’m sorry if…”

“Say sorry in your own house. Here remember that employment does not mean equality.”

The pen froze in my hand. The metal hanger hanging above her slowly swayed and drew a small shadow on the wall.

“I am only doing my work,” Sofia said quietly.

“People like you know how to answer very quickly. Look at your hands. They are for cleaning someone else’s floor, not for talking to my family.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered my father’s hands—fingers burned by oil when he washed dishes in a small restaurant in Juárez. Once he told me: “Do not humiliate the person who cleans your floor. One day it may be exactly that person who gets you back on your feet.”

“Dignity does not depend on work,” Sofia said.

Renata’s laughter was heard.

“Dignity? You clean rooms whose rent you could not pay in your whole life.”

I ended the call then.

I entered the house in the evening as if nothing had happened. Renata was waiting for me by the stairs, wearing an ivory dress with a small pearl attached to her ear.

“Was it a difficult day?” she asked.

“Ordinary.”

She kissed me. And for the first time I felt that on her lips there was, instead of perfume, the smell of lies.

At dinner she spoke about the engagement party. Politicians, hotel owners, journalists, and members of both families would be there. Tomorrow we were officially supposed to announce the wedding date.

“Everyone will talk about us,” Renata said excitedly.

“Probably,” I answered.

She left the room to check the final details of the charitable event. A few minutes later I found Teresa Aguilar, the house administrator, in the kitchen. She had served our family for twenty-four years, and her fingers always carried the smell of lavender soap.

“Tell me about Sofia,” I asked.

Teresa fell silent.

“She is a responsible girl. She is never late.”

“Does Renata treat her badly?”

Teresa lowered her eyes.

“It is impossible to talk about this, Mr. Alejandro.”

“With me it is possible.”

She gathered the edge of her apron in her hands.

“She does not humiliate only Sofia. She frightens everyone. But today she said something you should know. She ordered Sofia fired and…”

At that moment a door opened in the corridor. Renata stood there, holding a black folder, and when she saw the frightened color on Teresa’s face, she slowly smiled.

!!!  Fourteen years later, my son invited his biological father to the final, but Daniel lost color upon hearing his first words

“Apparently, very interesting conversations are held in my absence,” she said, placing the folder on the table.

Her fingers opened the folder’s clasp. I moved one step closer, while Renata reached toward the first document…

Her fingers touched the document, but I took hold of her wrist.

“First tell me what you were doing with Sofia.”

Renata looked at me. Surprise appeared in her eyes for a moment, and then her usual calm smile returned.

“You are asking me this? About the girl who refused to leave my room in front of the guests?”

“I heard the conversation.”

The clock in the kitchen showed nine o’clock in the evening. Its heavy pendulum touched the wooden wall with every movement, and it seemed that a small удар was heard in the room.

“What did you hear?” Renata tilted her head slightly.

“Everything.”

Teresa held her breath.

“Then you should know that my family will not be ashamed tomorrow because of you,” Renata said. “Sofia found an expensive watch in the guest room and put it in her pocket.”

“That is a lie,” Teresa said.

Renata turned toward her.

“Nobody is asking you.”

“I am asking,” I said.

For the first time Renata lost her smile.

“I waited three years for you to defend me in this house. And now you are defending a maid?”

“I am defending a person.”

“No. You have always loved presenting yourself as noble. You repeat your father’s stories as if everyone who works with their hands were a saint.”

I had my father’s old copper ship-shaped key in my pocket. I had carried it with me since childhood. Its side had warmed from the heat of my hand.

“My father, at least, never humiliated anyone because of his money.”

Renata pulled out a chair.

“Money does not give you the right to look down on everyone. But it also does not give you the right to turn my house against me.”

“Where is Sofia?”

“She left.”

“At nine o’clock at night?”

“She left on her own. Or perhaps your interrogation forced her to.”

Teresa quietly told me that Sofia was in the back yard. There I discovered that the girl was clutching a small suitcase beside the gate. It was beginning to rain, and her thin shoes had sunk into the mud.

“Go home,” I told her.

“Mr. Alejandro, I did not steal anything.”

“I know.”

“The lady told me that if I raised my voice, she would call the police on us and make my mother lose her job.”

A heavy coldness spread through my heart.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I needed the job. My mother is sick.”

Renata appeared in the doorway.

“What a touching scene. Now my fiancé comforts servants in the yard at night?”

“Enough, Renata.”

“Tomorrow’s party will not be ruined because of one maid.”

“It may be ruined because of the person terrorizing her.”

She leaned toward me.

“Be careful, Alejandro. You do not know how many people need this marriage.”

“But I know whom I no longer trust.”

That night I sent Sofia to Teresa’s sister’s house. Then I locked myself in my study. The black folder was still lying on the desk.

Inside were hotel accounts, statements from the charitable foundation, and three signatures that seemed to have been made in my name. The last page bore the stamp of an unknown company.

Teresa stood at the door.

!!!  Part 4 — I changed my cards after the divorce, and that very evening, a waiter smiled at my ex-husband’s table and looked at his face.

“You did not make these signatures, did you?”

“No.”

“Then who is using your name?”

The telephone rang. My father’s lawyer’s number appeared on the screen.

“Mr. Han,” the lawyer said, “do not hold tomorrow’s event. We found financial information connected with your fiancée. But you have not yet seen the worst.”

“Where is that information?”

“In your house. Renata knows that it exists and is now trying to take everything away before dawn.”

The sound of a door lock came from the corridor.

Teresa and I looked at each other. Renata’s steps were slowly approaching the study.

“Alejandro,” she said from behind the door, “if you do not open this door today, tomorrow it will already be too late.”

I took the folder and went toward the safe. Just then a message arrived on the phone from an unknown number: “If you want to know why she chose your surname, open the bottom drawer.”

I enclosed the small copper ship of the key in my hand and approached the drawer. I turned it in the lock. Inside lay only one memory card, bearing the inscription: “Full recording of the evening.”

The door handle moved. Outside, Renata raised her voice.

“Open up, Alejandro!”

I put the card into the device, the screen lit up, and in the very first frame Renata’s face appeared. Then I saw another man beside her…

The frame froze for several seconds, but Renata’s voice sounded clearly in the room.

“After the wedding Alejandro will sign everything. He does not yet know that I will be the new manager of the foundation.”

Sitting opposite her on the screen was Davido Valles, Renata’s father and my future father-in-law. He was tapping his fingers on the table, and on the table lay a sample of my signature.

“If he becomes suspicious about anything,” Davido said, “use the girl’s story. Society will always believe that a person working in a rich man’s house is a thief.”

Teresa covered her mouth with her hand.

Renata’s voice was heard again.

“Sofia is perfect. Humble, frightened, and poor. One false accusation will be enough.”

The video stopped.

Renata was no longer shouting behind the door. The silence was more frightening.

“It is a fabrication,” she said.

I opened the door. Renata stood there, holding her white phone. Her face no longer had the refined calm with which she had deceived businessmen and journalists for years.

“You were recording our conversations?” she asked me.

“No. Your partner recorded it. He thought that with the recording he would insure himself.”

“Alejandro, listen to me.”

“I listened to you for three years.”

Davido Valles also appeared behind her. It was evident that Renata had called him when I did not open the study door.

“This is a family misunderstanding,” he said. “It is not worth involving people.”

Teresa smiled bitterly.

“You were preparing a false accusation against Sofia.”

“Be quiet,” Davido shouted at her.

I placed the folder on the table.

“Here are the foundation’s accounts. Six million pesos were transferred to a company formally managed by Renata’s friend. But the money ultimately reached your family.”

Renata shook her head.

“I did not do this.”

“It was done with your digital signature.”

“But you loved me?”

That question was the most painful. For one moment I again saw the woman who had held my hand at my father’s grave and told me that she would become my family. Then I remembered the sound of Sofia being humiliated.

!!!  Part 4 — In the House Built Over Seven Years, My Mother-in-Law Settled in a Strange Family, but After One Question from Me, My Husband Lost Color in His Face

“Love is not the right to take away a person’s dignity.”

Renata’s eyes lit up.

“If you publish this video, you will destroy both families.”

“No. Your decisions destroyed them.”

A call came to the phone. It was the lawyer.

“Mr. Han, the recording is already in a secure repository. The accounts are in the process of being frozen. But we discovered one more thing: an account opened in the Bahamas in Renata’s name exists.”

Renata turned pale.

“That is impossible.”

“It would be impossible if the account had not been opened using your identity document,” I told her.

Davido struck the wall with his hand.

“This is your money, Alejandro! All the transfers were made in your name.”

“That is exactly why you wanted the wedding. You wanted to make me an accomplice to your crime.”

The sound of cars was heard outside. Renata looked toward the window.

“Whom did you invite?”

“Nobody. You yourselves left enough evidence.”

At that very moment my phone rang again. This time it was Sofia. Her voice was trembling.

“Mr. Han, two men came to my mother’s house. They say they are from the police and want to speak with me.”

I went to the window. A black car stood by the yard gate.

“Do not open the door. Teresa will send security to you immediately.”

Renata said quietly:

“You cannot understand me. I did all this because I wanted to have a place beside you.”

“No,” I answered. “You wanted not a place, but control.”

The lawyer called me again.

“Mr. Han, bad news. The recording is only the first part. The material received from Sofia’s phone showed that an older crime is hidden in your case. One day before your father’s death, Renata’s father met with him.”

Renata hid her face in her hands.

And I heard the following words:

“The recording of the meeting has already been sent. There your father says that if anything happens to him, you should look for the answer not in the family, but in the hotel’s old basement…”
