Part 4 — My wife accidentally revealed my infidelity while talking to a friend, but when a certain name was mentioned, the phone slipped from my hand.

Part 4

Douglas was gone from her side, but the most dangerous part of his lie was rapidly approaching our home.

It was eleven o’clock at night when a heavy pounding echoed against the door.

Lukas woke up, startled and frightened.

— “Dad, who is it?”

— “Stay in your room,” I told him, stepping out into the hallway.

Standing beyond the doorway were two police officers alongside my attorney, Nino Kavtaradze. Nino held a folder in her hands, while water dripped onto the floor from the officer’s wet coat.

— “Douglas gave a statement claiming that you were the one who took out the bank loan,” one of the officers said.

— “Then why have you come to my house?”

Nino intervened calmly:

— “Because his statement has already collapsed. The bank provided us with security camera footage.”

She pulled out a small playback screen.

Liza appeared in the video. She was standing at the bank window, holding a copy of my ID. Turning toward the camera, she told the teller:

— “My husband is sick. He asked me to handle everything on his behalf.”

Liza stood behind me, watching her own reflection on the screen.

— “That… that’s not how it was,” she whispered faintly.

Nino played the next recording.

Douglas’s voice filled the room:

— “If you shift the blame onto Alexander, we can buy time.”

Liza’s voice replied:

— “He won’t do anything. He’ll stay silent for the sake of the kids.”

I stared at the screen and felt a strange, hollow emptiness. Those words were spoken by my wife. Nobody forced her. Nobody threatened her. She simply said them.

The officer looked at her.

— “Mrs. Erikson, I advise you not to say anything further without an attorney present.”

— “Alexander, please,” Liza turned toward me. “Douglas made me start all of this. I just…”

— “Stop.”

I spoke the word quietly.

— “For once, do not try to weaponize my trust again.”

Liza stayed at the house that night, but invisible doors had already risen between us. She lay down in the guest room. I sat on the floor of the children’s room until Lukas’s breathing settled into a quiet rhythm.

The next morning, Douglas called once more.

Nino answered the call on my behalf.

— “My client has no intention of speaking with you.”

— “You have no idea what happens if I reveal everything,” Douglas’s voice threatened over the line.

— “On the contrary, Mr. Lindbergh. We know everything now.”

— “I was only trying to recover the money.”

— “You secured a loan under someone else’s name.”

Heavy breathing sounded from the other end.

— “It was Liza’s idea.”

Nino left the audio recorder running.

— “Your admission has been recorded.”

Silence followed.

Then Douglas disconnected the call.

That same day, I went to the bank. The branch manager laid out the documents across the desk. My forged signature looked alien—as though someone had stolen my hand and attached it to someone else’s fingers.

— “These funds have been fully frozen,” the manager informed me. “You personally bear no liability, as the forgery has been formally verified.”

— “What about the children’s account?”

— “It is secured. Only you will hold access rights.”

For the first time in a long while, the word “secured” sounded like something real.

Three days later, Liza was brought in for formal police interrogation. Her attorney tried to shift the weight of responsibility onto Douglas.

— “My client was emotionally vulnerable,” he asserted.

Nino laid out the documents in front of him.

— “Yet she was resilient enough to transfer funds for months, plan clandestine meetings, and forge her husband’s signature.”

Liza lowered her head.

— “I didn’t want it to end this way.”

I sat across the room and heard how that phrase sounded from the outside for the very first time. I used to believe “I didn’t want to” mitigated an action. That day, I realized it was merely a desire to escape consequences.

Her own words were read aloud to her:

“Alexander won’t notice a thing. He’s completely focused on his work and the kids.”

Her expression grew rigid.

— “I didn’t mean it like that.”

Nino pressed play on the recording.

Her voice echoed through the room once more:

“He’s completely focused on his work and the kids.”

Liza closed her eyes.

There was no longer any escape from her own words.

A week later, the house was almost empty. Liza packed her suitcases and moved temporarily to her sister Ana’s place. I left the children’s rooms untouched, clearing out only our master bedroom.

I removed her belongings from the closet. Resting on the bed was a single small object—the blue metal fastener from Linda’s old school folder. Liza had been holding it the night I first realized the truth was right in front of me.

I set the fastener on the desk.

The room was quiet, but for the first time, I didn’t fear the silence.

The court granted Liza temporary shared custody of the children alongside me, though she was barred from accessing any financial accounts. Douglas was formally charged with fraud and document forgery. Ana admitted to aiding him, while Robin filed for divorce.

I wished no harm upon any of them.

I simply wanted life to place each person directly before the weight of their own choices.

Three months later, I rented a modest apartment on the other side of town. The walls were painted white, and the bus stop was visible from the kitchen window. I walked to work every morning, inspecting heating systems at local schools, and met Lukas at the basketball court in the afternoons.

Linda continued drawing.

One evening, she handed me a new drawing.

— “Did you decide not to draw four people this time?” I asked gently.

— “There are still four of us,” she replied. “The house is just different.”

The drawing depicted four figures, with a large window drawn between them. White snow fell outside the glass.

The season’s first snow arrived in late December. Lukas ran out into the yard while I adjusted his winter hat.

— “Dad, is everything going to be okay now?”

His question lingered in my heart for a long moment.

— “Everything doesn’t become okay all at once,” I told him. “But we will be together, and we won’t hide the truth anymore.”

— “Will Mom come visit?”

— “Whenever you want to see her, you will.”

I wasn’t shielding the children from Liza. I was shielding them from lies.

One evening, four months later, a text message arrived on my phone:

!!!  PARTE 4 — Después de diez años, David rechazó casarse conmigo durante nuestra cena, pero al amanecer dejó de sonreír

“Alexander, I know it’s late. Douglas destroyed everything. I still love you. Let’s talk just once, like we used to.”

A second message followed minutes later:

“You can trust me again.”

I set the phone on the table and walked over to the window. Outside, snow fell softly, covering the footprints left by Lukas’s basketball in the yard.

I typed a single-sentence reply to Liza:

“I no longer live in a place where trust is requested through lies.”

I wrote nothing more.

When I turned back to the children, Linda had set a small gift on the table for me—a small box crafted from brown cardboard with my name written on top.

— “This is for you,” she said.

I opened the box.

Inside lay the blue metal fastener retrieved from the old folder. Linda had attached a small slip of white paper to it:

“The truth came home.”

I held the metal clip in the palm of my hand. Once, that item was linked to a hidden lie. Now, it marked a new life built by my daughter’s hands.

I walked over to the window and looked out at the street illuminated by the snow.

The house was no longer the old one.

But for the very first time, it truly belonged to us.

Missed the beginning?
