When the Boss Saw My Hidden Wound and Ordered the Door Locked, His Look Stopped Everyone in the Room

At the moment when Ronan Hayes saw the hidden bruise on my face, all four doors of the room locked at the same time.

I was lying on the cold bathroom floor and pressing a makeup sponge to my cheek when the clock struck eight in the evening. The mirror was covered with water spots, and above it a yellow light flickered like a sick person. A purple mark stretched from my jaw to my temple. Green concealer, thick foundation, and powder should have been enough to cover it.

It should have been.

“Sadie, hurry!” Thomas knocked on the door. “Hayes is already here.”

I threw the sponge into my bag and looked at myself one last time. A black, high-necked shirt covered the bruises in the shape of fingers around my neck. Long sleeves hid the scratches left on my forearm. My hair was tied so tightly that my scalp hurt.

For two years I had been learning invisibility.

Karl had taught me that well. I was not to speak loudly at home. I was not to answer quickly. I had to understand from his steps what kind of night awaited me. Last night he came in smelling of gin and hit me only because I had delayed answering a question by one second.

Now every breath cut through my ribs like shards of glass.

But I could not lose my job. In the closet, under a loose floorboard, I had eighteen hundred dollars in a small brown envelope. I needed two hundred more before escaping. A few weeks. Only a few weeks.

As soon as I went into the kitchen, hot air rushed at me. The smells of fried meat, truffle oil, and fear mixed together.

Thomas took me by the elbow. He touched me slightly, but I still flinched.

“Table four. The Obsidian Room. You serve.”

“Who is it?”

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Hayes.”

Even the cook stopped shouting.

Ronan Hayes did not appear in newspapers. He owned the people who owned the newspapers. Ports, underground casinos, half the judges—his name was spoken quietly everywhere.

“You will not speak until he addresses you,” Thomas told me and put a heavy silver tray into my hands. “You will not look into his eyes. You will not make a mistake.”

“Understood.”

The carpet toward the Obsidian Room swallowed every step. I passed two enormous guards in front of the door. One searched my bag, and the other opened the dark oak door.

Inside, the fireplace hummed quietly. Four men sat at the table. Three had heavy bodies and restless eyes. The fourth sat at the head of the room and seemed to gather all the air around himself.

Ronan.

An open ledger lay before him. A black pen slowly turned between his long fingers.

“The port property is unprofitable,” said the scarred man. “The workers’ representative wants another ten percent.”

“Then he is no longer useful to us,” Ronan answered.

His voice sent a chill down my back.

I poured whiskey for the three men. My ribs hurt, but my hand did not tremble. I had to be invisible.

When I reached Ronan, I placed a white napkin beside his ledger. At that exact moment, the scarred man slammed his fist onto the table.

The sound tore through my entire body.

I raised my hands to cover my face, stepped back, and struck the bottle against the edge of the table. Whiskey spilled across the white tablecloth.

“Forgive me,” I stammered. “I’ll clean it immediately.”

“Stop.”

Ronan was no longer looking at the drink. He was looking at me.

My heel caught in the carpet, and the light revealed the left side of my cheek. From the heat and sweat, my makeup had cracked. Beneath it, a purple, almost black bruise was visible.

Ronan’s jaw tightened.

“Come here,” he said.

I could not move.

“Now.”

I gripped the tray so tightly that my fingers turned white. I took two steps and stopped in front of him.

“Look at me, Sadie.”

When I heard his voice, I realized that perhaps I would no longer need my escape plan that night at all. Ronan took a black folder from the table and stretched out his hand toward me…

I went to Ronan, although my knees were shaking. Even the warmth of the fireplace standing before him could not reach my frozen hands.

“Who did this to you?” he asked.

“No one. I fell down the stairs.”

“A bad lie.”

“Please don’t take my job away.”

The men in the room watched me in silence. Thomas stood by the door and worried the napkin clenched in his hand as if my fate depended on it.

Ronan did not shout at me. That was exactly what was most dangerous.

“Call a doctor,” he said.

“I don’t want a doctor.”

“That was not a request.”

“If I go to the hospital, my husband will find me.”

The word “husband” slipped out of me unintentionally. A heavy silence fell over the room.

Ronan put the pen on the table.

“His name.”

“Karl Jenkins.”

Ronan narrowed his eyes slightly.

“Do you have a phone?”

“At home.”

“Then you cannot return home.”

Those words stopped my breath. I needed money to escape, but for the first time I understood that perhaps my home was already a prison.

Ronan opened the folder. From the top he took out a small object wrapped in wood-colored paper.

“They found this in your bag when they searched you.”

I recognized it. It was my copper keychain, shaped like a small seahorse, which my mother had given me when I was a child.

Ronan placed it on the table and told me:

“This should not have been in your house today…”

This should not have been in my house today.

Ronan put his finger on the small seahorse-shaped keychain. The copper glimmered faintly in the fireplace light. My mother had given it to me for my thirteenth birthday, and since then I had attached it to the key to my closet. Karl must have seen it hundreds of times.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“They found this keychain in your bag,” Ronan said. “But three hours ago my man found something else in front of your house.”

He took a photograph from the folder and turned it around on the table.

The photograph showed the back door of my house. The lock was broken.

“Why were you spying on me?” I whispered.

“I wasn’t spying on you. I was watching Karl Jenkins.”

The scarred man, Leo, stopped his noisy, breath-like movement for the first time.

“You know Karl?”

Ronan looked at him.

“I know his real name too.”

The sound of the fireplace grew louder in my ears.

“He works as a warehouse renter,” I said. “Sometimes he does day jobs.”

“No, Sadie. He is my accountant’s brother and he has been stealing money from my ports for six months.”

I thought I had misunderstood.

“Karl… is stealing money?”

“Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

Thomas locked the door. The sound of the lock froze inside my body.

Ronan took out a second sheet. It was a copy of a police report with my address on it.

“Karl used your house as a temporary storage place. He expected to return there today because he thinks I still haven’t found him.”

“You think I am helping him?”

“No. If I thought that, you would not be standing in front of me now.”

!!!  Ich verschwand schwanger von der Gala meines Mannes, doch als er am Morgen die ersten Nachrichten las, verlor er seine gewohnte Sicherheit

His answer frightened me more than the accusation.

“Then why am I here?”

Ronan picked up the phone and started a video on the screen. The camera image was grainy, but I still recognized Karl’s face. He was standing in my house and unscrewing a floorboard.

He was taking my brown envelope.

I could not make a sound.

“My money…” I barely said.

“He has already taken it.”

In the video Karl opened the envelope, counted the money, and called someone on the phone.

“Sadie will be home soon,” he said. “When she returns, everything will be over.”

Leo swore quietly.

Ronan turned off the video.

“Now I will tell you why you must not return there,” he said. “Before coming to me this evening, Karl answered one more call. And the call was… from the police.”

At that moment Ronan’s phone rang. He looked at the screen, and his face changed for the first time.

“That’s impossible,” he whispered.

“What happened?”

He did not answer me. He only accepted the call.

He listened to the other side for several seconds, then slowly lowered the phone.

“Karl knows you are here. And now he has someone else in his hands instead of you…”
