They Were Trying to Take My Grandmother’s House Away, but When They Saw a Man Standing at the Door with a Folder, My Mother’s Smile Disappeared

On Wednesday, at ten in the morning, my mother struck the table in my grandmother’s living room and told me that I had to leave the house by Friday. Julia stood beside her, smiling with white teeth and waving a stack of papers in her hand as if she had already won.

I am twenty-eight years old, and I inherited this house three years ago. Grandmother Helen and grandfather Robert died within a few months of each other. Their Victorian house in Portland, savings, investments, and insurance were worth almost nine hundred thousand. But the most valuable thing from them for me was a small copper key with a bird engraved on it. Grandfather always told me: “As long as this key is in your hand, this house knows your voice.”

I went to them every week. I arranged their medicines, took care of the garden, paid the bills, and in the evenings repaired Grandmother’s old radio. Julia, meanwhile, had not appeared for years. She considered herself a celebrity, although every business she started on the internet soon disappeared. Mother and Father still stood by her. Julia was their golden girl. And I was only the quiet, reliable daughter who counted numbers and solved problems silently.

On the day the will was read, in the lawyer’s office, such silence fell over the room as if someone had turned off the air. They left everything to me. Mother immediately asked when I intended to “divide it fairly for the family.” And Julia told me that a real sister would not keep such a large fortune alone.

That same week I hired David Morrison. He transferred the property into a trust, and himself became the official administrator. I remained the only beneficiary. We kept the documents in three different places. I told my mother nothing about it.

Three years passed peacefully. I repaired the house, planted roses in the backyard, and arranged a small workroom. The family visited me on holidays and ironically told me that “fortune had smiled on me.” I did not realize that they were simply waiting for the right time.

That Wednesday Julia spread the papers out on the wooden table.

“The house has already been transferred into my name,” she said. “You have to vacate it by Friday.”

!!!  I Pretended to Leave for Germany, but When I Returned to My Own House at Night, I Saw Something at the Table That Made Ivan Stop Smiling

“What are you talking about?”

Mother smiled at me coldly.

“You do not deserve such a life. Some people simply get good things more than they should.”

“How did you transfer my house?”

Julia shrugged.

“Grandmother and Grandfather had old debts. You were not managing the property properly. I bought the house to cover the debts.”

I looked at the documents. The stamps, signatures, and dates looked genuine. However, I immediately noticed one small detail: in the bottom corner of the page was a cadastral number that had already been changed three years earlier.

Mother extended her hand toward me.

“Hand over the keys.”

I put my fingers into my pocket and touched the copper key. Its cold surface was the only thing stopping me at that moment.

“Do you really think I will let you do this?” I asked.

Julia’s smile widened.

“You were always too calm. Now I am seeing you frightened for the first time.”

I turned on my phone silently and placed it under the table. Then the doorbell rang. Julia turned her head, and Mother took a step backward. Someone stood behind the door, holding a dark folder and ringing the bell for the second time…

I opened the door and saw David Morrison. His coat was wet with rain, and in his hand he held a folder marked with my name.

“At last,” Mother whispered.

David looked around the room.

“Mrs. Claire, I need to speak with you alone.”

“Everyone stays here,” Julia said. “This is my house now.”

David looked directly at her.

“No, Mrs. Julia. Not yet.”

My breath caught. He placed the folder on the table, but did not open it immediately. He only put a finger on the upper clasp.

“Where did you find these documents?” I asked.

“Where your family did not think to look.”

Mother cried out angrily:

“We worked with professionals!”

“So did I,” David answered calmly. “And that is precisely why I advise you now that no one touch anything in this house anymore.”

Julia’s smile slowly disappeared from her face.

!!!  On the Night of the Wedding, I Read a Message in My Husband’s Car, and the Smile Immediately Disappeared from His Mother’s Face

“If this is a threat, I will call the police.”

“By all means, call them,” David said. “But first listen to this.”

He took out a small device and switched it on. Julia’s voice sounded in the room. She was telling someone on the phone that forging Mother’s signature would be easy and that they had to “throw Claire out of the house before she understood anything.”

Mother lost her color.

“This recording is illegal!”

“Perhaps,” David replied. “But there is another, more serious piece of evidence.”

He took hold of the folder’s clasp. And I realized that what was inside concerned more than just my house. My family’s three-year secret was hidden there…

David opened the folder. On the very first page, a notary’s stamp was visible, but that stamp only looked genuine at first glance. David lifted the page and showed me the original copy placed underneath.

“This is the registered agreement of the trust,” he said. “The house, investments, and funds are protected. Neither Julia nor your parents nor any invented creditor can sell it.”

Julia leaned against the armchair.

“That is impossible. I have an official extract.”

“You have a forged extract,” I told her.

Mother walked around the table.

“Claire, we only wanted to help the family.”

“Help the family by throwing me out of the house?”

David took out a second document.

“The forged transfer application was filed two weeks ago. The signature supposedly belongs to Mrs. Claire. However, the examination confirmed that this signature was transferred from a scanned copy.”

Julia shook her head.

“I did not sign it.”

“But it was sent from your email,” David replied. “And in that letter you yourself requested that the transfer be completed by Friday.”

Mother looked at Julia.

“You said everything was legal.”

“Because that is what I was told!”

For the first time I saw my sister become confused. For three years she had always seemed confident, but now her hands were trembling.

David turned on the recording again. Julia’s voice rang clearly through the room:

“Tell Mother that Claire will not understand anything. If she resists us, we will say that Grandmother had debts.”

After the recording ended, only the ticking of the old clock could be heard.

“You had a recorder?” Julia asked me.

“On the day you suddenly came into my house, the phone was lying on the table,” I answered.

Mother sat down on a chair.

“We will not leave this as it is.”

“That is exactly what I expected,” David said. “Therefore, a report for forgery, fraud, and attempted unlawful entry has already been filed.”

Julia suddenly opened the door and went outside. I thought everything was over, but David took another sheet of paper from the folder. His face changed.

“Claire, this document does not concern today’s case. We found it in your grandfather’s personal archive.”

“What does it say?”

David picked up the phone. At that moment, a call came in from an unknown number.

“Do not open that box,” said an unfamiliar voice. “If you open it, you will learn why they left you everything…”
