Part 4 — My sister did not invite me to the royal wedding, but when I came to her door dressed in uniform, her smile disappeared

After the message was read, everyone in the hall began speaking at once.

The King ordered the guards to lock every entrance to the harbor. Alexander contacted the head of security by mobile connection. Mother was crying, while Father stood against the wall and wrung his hands as if trying to pull the past out of his fingers.

Rachel was left alone.

The long train of her wedding dress was spread across the floor. A drop of wine fell on the white fabric and left a small, dark stain.

“I did not hurt anyone,” she said.

“You stole the letter,” Alexander replied.

“Only so that everything would not fall apart for me.”

“You built your wedding by stealing someone else’s life.”

Rachel looked toward me.

“You do not understand what this means. My whole life I tried to be important to someone.”

“And my whole life I tried to be enough for you.”

She found no answer to these words.

The King tried to come closer to me.

“Emily, you must know that we are now responsible for your safety.”

“I have carried responsibility for my own safety myself for years.”

“This is something else.”

“I know. My whole life people hid something from me.”

Mother stepped forward.

“I hid your birth certificate.”

The hall fell silent again.

“Where is it?” I asked.

“In the wall of the house, behind the fireplace.”

Father lowered his eyes.

“The adviser told us that if the royal family ever found you, you would have no right to choose. They would take your name, your life, and your future.”

“So you turned me into a ghost for my sister?”

Mother said through tears:

“We were parents who became afraid.”

“Afraid parents still have to tell their child who they are.”

At that moment a voice sounded in Alexander’s earpiece. He raised his head.

“The message was sent from Rachel’s phone.”

Rachel immediately denied it.

“No. My phone lay in my room all day.”

“Who went into the room?” I asked.

She became confused.

“Only my adviser, Mr. Vale.”

The King’s expression changed.

“Vale was my adviser twenty-nine years ago as well.”

Everything came together in one instant.

My father’s fear. The hidden certificate. The missing letter. Rachel’s panic. The old royal adviser who had protected the same secret for decades.

We still went to the harbor, but not alone. Security vehicles followed us in front and behind. Night had already fallen. Lights trembled on the surface of the water, while the wooden piers made a low sound when the waves struck them.

When we reached the abandoned warehouse, only one person was waiting for us.

Mr. Vale.

He was holding a small bag.

“You are late,” he said.

Alexander put his hand on his weapon.

“Put the bag down.”

Vale chuckled.

“If this record is published, the royal family will admit that the heir was alive and that his child was raised in America. It will be a scandal for the monarchy.”

“Is that why you hid me?” I asked.

“I hid all of you. Luka should not have escaped. You should not have been born.”

These words turned out to be more painful than a threat.

The King took a step.

“Enough, Vale.”

But Vale took a small recorder out of the bag.

“First listen to yourselves.”

Rachel’s voice sounded in the recording; several hours earlier she had told Vale: “Emily must not come here. If necessary, blame everything on her.”

Rachel froze.

Her own voice echoed from the warehouse walls. Once. Twice. A third time.

She covered her ears with her hands.

“Turn it off!”

“You said that,” I told her.

“I do not remember.”

“Everyone who has heard it now remembers.”

Vale tried to escape, but guards were standing at the door. Within several minutes they had put handcuffs on him. Rachel sat down on the floor and stared at the white dress, as if she were seeing for the first time what she was wearing.

Then the King took the recording and held it out toward me.

“This evidence is enough for the police. But you must decide whether you want the royal family to officially announce your identity.”

I did not answer immediately.

I looked at the water.

All my life other people had decided who I was. This time the choice had to belong to me.

“I do not want a throne, a title, or someone else’s guilt on my shoulders,” I said. “I want to take back my name.”

The King bowed his head.

“Then that is exactly what you will receive.”

Rachel asked me quietly:

“And me?”

I looked at her for a long time.

“You will remain with the consequences of your choice.”

That same night Rachel’s lawyer called me.

“She says that everything was a misunderstanding.”

“She may even believe it herself.”

“Please, do not make a statement.”

“I have already been silent for far too long.”

“If you do not remain silent, her marriage will end.”

“Her marriage began with a lie.”

The lawyer fell silent.

“You will not win this battle, Commander Carter.”

“I did not start a battle. I simply will not step back this time.”

The next day the King issued an official statement. It said that Luka, the lost member of the royal family, was my biological father and that my identity had been hidden years earlier. Vale confessed to the crime. Rachel’s wedding was canceled, although I was not required to testify against her in court.

I did not want to see her fall.

I wanted, at last, to see my life.

Three weeks later I emptied my childhood room. Only one old photograph remained on the wall, in which little Rachel was hiding behind me while I held the cracked compass with both hands.

I could have taken the photograph down.

I did not.

Some memories do not ask for forgiveness. They only ask to be put in the right place.

Two months later I moved from the Virginia coast to Norfolk. I began working as an instructor at the naval academy. In the mornings I taught cadets to read maps, and in the evenings I returned to a small apartment where the harbor lights could be seen from the window.

The King offered me a title.

I refused.

Alexander often called me. Friendship turned out to be easier than explaining kinship. He never spoke to me as if I owed him something.

One evening he left a small wooden box at the door of my house. Inside was Luka’s old compass.

That same day Mother also called me.

“Can you ever forgive us?”

“I do not know,” I answered. “But I no longer avoid conversation.”

That was the first real answer I had given her after years.

!!!  Part 4 — My daughter disappeared by the lake, and a year later, a friend brought me her phone—my hand trembled at the last photo.

In winter I received a letter from Rachel. It was only one page.

“You were right. I was afraid that your appearance would take my life away from me. In reality, my life ended when I began measuring myself through the eyes of others.”

At the end of the letter she asked me to meet.

I did not answer for several days.

Then I wrote to her:

“I will be able to meet when you ask nothing of me and I do not come to save you.”

Her reply never came.

Years did not pass. Only several months.

But one morning, when the first snow fell in the academy yard, for the first time I felt as if something heavy had been lifted from my shoulders.

My little niece, who was temporarily living with the family of Alexander’s friend, sent me a drawing. There was the sea, two boats, and a woman holding a compass in her hand in the drawing.

At the bottom it said: “Aunt Emily always finds the way.”

I looked at those words for a long time.

Then I placed the cracked copper compass on the table.

The needle still pointed north.

This time I was not waiting for anyone to choose the way for me.

I already knew where I was going.

And for the first time in my life, I opened the door myself.

Missed the beginning?
