Before leaving, my daughter quietly warned me, while my wife’s smile in the kitchen suddenly disappeared

Fifteen minutes before the taxi arrived, my six-year-old daughter clung to my neck and whispered in a voice as though even the walls of the room could hear her:

“Dad, don’t leave today.”

A black suitcase stood at my feet. A small copper compass belonging to Lily hung from its handle; on its back she had drawn the sun herself and written: “For Dad’s journey.” I grabbed it instinctively, but my fingers were trembling so much that the compass struck the suitcase several times.

“I’m only going for two nights, little one,” I said, and smiled.

Lily shook her head. Then she looked toward the kitchen.

Sarah was standing there. She held a glass in her hand and had a calm smile on her face.

At that moment my smile disappeared.

“When you leave, Mommy puts drops in my juice,” Lily told me.

I dropped to my knees.

“What drops?”

“She calls them vitamins. Then I feel strange. I can’t keep still, my heart beats fast… and she records me.”

Sarah held the glass motionless in her hand.

“Lily, my darling, did you have a bad dream again?” she asked calmly.

“I didn’t lie!” Lily’s voice cracked.

I put my hands on her shoulders. Four years earlier, her mother, Hannah, had died after a sudden illness. Since then, every fear of Lily’s had been an alarm bell to me. Sarah knew this. That was precisely why I trusted her.

“Why does Sarah record videos of you?” I asked.

Lily pressed her lips together.

“She says she has to show Dad what I become when you aren’t here. She says that one day I have to live somewhere else.”

The refrigerator motor quietly started in the kitchen. That ordinary sound frightened me more than her words.

“Where are you supposed to live?”

“I don’t know. She talks to another man too. Julian. He comes when you aren’t here. They talk about a house by the sea.”

Sarah put the glass on the counter.

“Marcus, this child is imagining everything from exhaustion.”

“Then why does she know Julian’s name?”

Her smile disappeared for a moment, but immediately returned.

“Julian is a real-estate agent. I wanted to tell you.”

“About a house by the sea?”

“About your family property. What is strange about that?”

!!!  Part 4 — Mother Left Me Alone for a Month, and I Left Something Waiting for Her in the Kitchen — Her Smile Disappeared Immediately

Something heavy sank inside me. After Hannah’s death, the property left for Lily was kept in a special account, while the seaside house would pass into her name only when she turned eighteen. I had never told Sarah the details about this.

The taxi driver honked from outside.

Sarah came toward me.

“Don’t make a scene. You have an important meeting in Chicago. I’ll take care of Lily.”

I put my phone into my pocket and nodded as if calmly.

“You’re right. I have to go.”

Fear appeared in Lily’s eyes.

“Dad…”

I bent down quietly and whispered in her ear:

“I’m not leaving. I just want them to think that I left.”

I had Sarah’s suitcase taken to the car. On the way to the airport, I told the driver to let me out at the terminal. From there I canceled the ticket, turned off my phone, and returned home through the back door.

It was six in the evening when I slipped into the dark garden. Through the window I saw Sarah take the glass, drip some transparent liquid into it, and hand it to Lily.

Lily pulled her head back.

“Drink, or Dad will have to worry about you again,” Sarah told her.

I was already turning the door handle when a man’s voice came from the living room:

“If he can’t leave today, everything will change.”

It was Julian.

Sarah turned toward him and took a thin brown folder from the table. Her hand reached toward the lock…

The sight of the folder took my breath away. I froze behind the door and turned on my phone. The small camera light was not shining, but the recording had already begun.

“Marcus will return in only two days,” Julian said. “After that we won’t be able to stop him.”

“He won’t return,” Sarah replied. “The videos will be enough to show everyone how he can no longer control the child.”

The leg of Lily’s chair scraped across the floor.

“I don’t want to drink!”

Sarah tightened her hand around her wrist.

“Drink.”

I opened the door.

“Let her go.”

They both looked at me. The color drained from Julian’s face, while Sarah looked as though she had seen a ghost.

“You were supposed to be at the airport,” she said.

!!!  Am descoperit că plătisem petrecerea aniversară la care nu eram invitată, iar fratele meu a început să râdă

“I canceled the ticket.”

Lily ran toward me. The glass fell to the floor and shattered.

Julian hugged the folder to his chest.

“Marcus, before you say anything, you should know that all this was being done to protect you.”

“Then why were you hiding it?”

Sarah could not find an answer.

At that moment my phone began vibrating. The camera recording was being sent to cloud storage. An unknown message appeared on the screen: “Backup received. The camera in the second room was also recorded.”

Julian saw the message and stepped back.

“A second camera?” Sarah asked quietly.

For the first time I smiled.

“You still don’t know who the real target in this house was…”

Julian put the folder on the table, as if he had suddenly realized that papers could no longer protect him. Outside, rain began, and drops fell against the windowpane like someone’s nervous fingers.

“Take Lily upstairs,” Sarah told me.

“No,” I replied. “She is staying here.”

Lily stood behind me, clutching my shirt with both hands. Her palms were covered in cold sweat.

Julian pulled out a chair.

“This is a terrible misunderstanding.”

“Then open the folder.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Marcus, think first. You are emotional, you are tired, and based on a child’s words you are accusing your own wife.”

“Not the child. The recording.”

I put the phone on the table. With several touches, the camera’s audio sounded in the room.

“If Marcus keeps custody, the account will be locked until she turns eighteen,” Sarah said in the recording.

Julian’s voice followed:

“But if a doctor confirms that the father is psychologically unstable, custody will temporarily pass to you.”

Sarah’s face changed.

Lily moved closer to me.

Sarah’s laughter sounded in the recording.

“The drops only speed up her movements for several hours. Then on the video it looks as though she cannot control herself. The court will believe the video, not the child’s words.”

Silence fell over the room.

“You were drugging my daughter?” I asked.

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t want to hurt her.”

“You wanted Lily to look ill.”

Julian suddenly snickered.

“Neither of you understands. The money is not only in the account. Behind the seaside house there is another property, which only the guardian can sell.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Bei der Hochzeit meiner Schwester erschien mein schlimmstes Geheimnis auf der Leinwand – doch als ich mein Handy hob, erstarrte mein Vater

My stomach felt a contraction.

“Is that why you wanted to take Lily away?”

“That is why we needed to remove you,” Sarah said.

At that moment the phone rang. The number of my lawyer, Ellen Hart, was on the screen.

“Marcus,” Ellen said as soon as I answered, “I received the camera backup. But now they have sent me another file. This is no longer about the case brought against you.”

“What is it about?”

Ellen was silent for several seconds.

“Someone signed the medical records of Hannah’s death. The signature belongs to Sarah. And the record says that that night she was alone with Hannah in the hospital…”

The glass fell from Sarah’s hand. Julian looked toward the door.

Ellen added quietly:

“Marcus, the hospital just called me. They found a copy of an old camera recording. But the video shows something Sarah has not yet heard…”
