The three-year-old boy stopped eating in my arms and pointed strangely at his father — Rico turned pale

When three-year-old Leo put his hand on my wrist, such silence fell over the entire restaurant that it was as if everyone had stopped breathing at once.

That evening it was raining in Brooklyn, while drops of water ran down the windows of “Il Destino” in long, shining lines. I stood by the kitchen door and turned a small wooden whale pendant in my hand. This thing belonged to my brother, Nika. He gave it to me five years ago and told me that whenever I was scared, I should squeeze it.

That evening everyone was scared.

In the middle of the restaurant, at the table the staff quietly called “the royal table,” sat Rico Moretti. Four armed guards stood around him. In front of him, a little boy had climbed onto a chair and was screaming so loudly that the wine glasses were vibrating.

“Leo, stop!” Rico roared. “Enough!”

The boy picked up a plate and smashed it onto the floor. Truffle risotto scattered across the white marble.

“Mr. Moretti, I’ll have another dish brought,” the manager, Marco, said carefully.

“You’re not here to give advice,” Rico replied coldly. “Do something.”

A silver tray slipped from Marco’s hands and fell noisily onto the floor. I saw Leo flinch. It was as if he had already heard that sound somewhere, a long time ago.

Dante, Rico’s biggest guard, spread his arms.

“Little one, come to me. I won’t hurt you.”

Leo’s eyes widened with fear.

“Don’t touch him!” I shouted, but it was too late.

Dante grabbed the boy. Leo bit him so hard that blood appeared on the man’s skin. Someone in the hall cried out quietly.

Rico stood up. His face was tired, but such coldness appeared in his eyes that even I stepped back.

“Everyone out,” he said.

No one moved.

“I said, everyone out!”

Then Leo screamed again and covered his ears with both hands. There were chocolate stains on his little fingers, but something black showed near his fingernails. Not dirt. It was dust, like the kind I saw in old wooden boxes.

My coworker Sonia grabbed me by the arm.

“Clara, don’t go over there. This is Rico Moretti.”

“He is a man,” I answered. “And the child is hurting.”

“You have no idea who you are standing in front of.”

“I have an idea. In front of a frightened father.”

Sonia fell silent.

I went into the kitchen, took warm milk, and put one sugar cube into the glass. Exactly one. When I was a child, Mother used to calm me this way whenever Nika was in the hospital and I spent the nights in the corridor.

!!!  Rechacé llevarme a mis sobrinos al mar y, cuando mi suegra mencionó mi herida más íntima, su sonrisa desapareció

When I reached Rico’s table, Dante blocked my way.

“Step back.”

“If you touch him one more time, he’ll scream harder.”

“You need a job, girl, not heroism.”

“Today I need both.”

Rico raised his hand and Dante stopped. I knelt in front of Leo. The boy could not regulate his breathing. Tears ran down his cheeks in black lines.

“Leo, I’m Clara,” I said quietly. “There is only one sugar cube in your glass. You can check for yourself.”

He looked at the glass but did not touch it.

“Did Mother do this?” I asked.

Leo pressed his lips together.

Rico looked at me quickly.

“Don’t ask my son questions.”

“Then you ask him. I’m just trying to make him able to breathe.”

The boy suddenly reached out his hand and wrapped his fingers around my wooden whale pendant. His touch was cold as ice. Then he tapped my wrist three times, stopped, and tapped twice again.

I knew this rhythm. Nika had taught it to me.

It meant: “Hidden.”

Leo pointed his other hand toward Rico, then looked under the chair and barely pronounced with the movement of his lips:

“Mother…”

Rico’s face suddenly changed.

The guards standing behind him looked at one another. In the corner of the hall, the red light of a camera was blinking. Leo brought his finger under the chair again and this time touched something metal.

Rico walked around the table.

“Don’t take your hand away from there,” he said.

But I had already seen how his fingers were moving toward the small leather folder hidden under the chair…

Rico’s hand darted toward the folder, but Leo grabbed my fingers.

“Don’t take it,” he said clearly for the first time.

His voice stopped the entire hall.

Rico froze in place.

“Leo, who told you this?”

The boy lowered his head and pressed my wooden whale to his chest.

I pulled the folder out from under the chair. The leather was scratched, and the clasp was tied with a silver cord.

“Open it,” I told Rico.

“You don’t know what you’re touching.”

“I know that your son is afraid when he sees it.”

Dante stepped forward.

“Sir, let’s take it away.”

!!!  Ela me chamou de simples enfermeira diante do homem mais poderoso do salão, mas sua confiança desapareceu quando ele se aproximou

“No,” Rico said.

That “no” sounded different. For the first time it no longer resembled an order. It resembled a request that even he did not understand.

Rico picked up the folder. Leo immediately covered his ears with his hands.

“Mother said not to open it until Father was alone,” he whispered.

Rico bent down.

“Mother told you this?”

Leo nodded.

Marco locked the door. Sonia lowered the curtains. And I realized that no one in the restaurant was eating anymore, and no one was breathing freely anymore.

Rico opened the silver cord. Inside lay one small device and a folded sheet of paper.

At that moment Rico’s phone rang. His lawyer’s name appeared on the screen.

“Don’t answer,” I said.

He looked at me.

The phone rang again. Then the ringing suddenly stopped.

The device hidden in the folder lit up red.

And someone’s voice sounded…

A woman’s voice came from the folder. She spoke quietly, but every word sounded in the restaurant like a knife.

“Rico, if you are listening to this, it means I did not manage to speak with you.”

Rico leaned against the chair. The color disappeared from his face.

“Elena…” he rasped.

Leo closed his eyes and squeezed my hand more tightly.

Elena’s breathing could be heard in the recording. Somewhere in the distance, a clock was ringing.

“The car accident was not an accident. Vittorio told me that he wanted to take the company away from you. He knew you would refuse, so first he had to destroy your name, and then I and Leo had to disappear.”

Dante swore quietly.

“Vittorio?” he said. “That’s impossible.”

“My father threatened me for six months,” the recording continued. “He damaged the brakes of my car. I gathered evidence and was planning to flee with the child. But if I did not make it, Leo knows where everything is.”

Rico knelt in front of Leo.

“Son, did Mother tell you where it was?”

The boy first looked at his father, then turned toward me and touched the wooden whale. Then he put his little hand on his chest and said quietly:

“Mother’s book.”

Elena’s voice sounded once more in the recording.

“Go to the old house where I stored the childhood books on Nikolay Street. The main document is hidden in the blue cover. Trust only Clara. She is the only one who will understand Leo’s hand signs. I met her once at the hospital and I know that because of Nika she will never forget these signs.”

!!!  Mi nuera me arrojó una copa durante la cena familiar, y cuando mi hijo tomó su brazo, su sonrisa desapareció

My body froze.

I did not remember Elena at all. But I remembered Nika. During his illness Elena really did come to the hospital once, still carrying baby Leo, and brought me water. Then I could not imagine that this meeting would ever save my life.

Rico turned toward me.

“You knew?”

“No. I swear, no.”

“Then why did you understand her signs?”

“Because my brother was deaf. Leo’s hand movements are the same.”

The recording ended. For several seconds there was only the sound of rain.

Then Rico’s phone rang again. This time Vittorio’s name appeared on the screen.

Rico answered.

“Where is the folder?” a man’s voice immediately sounded.

Rico was silent.

“Don’t play games with me, boy. We are already watching your son.”

Leo began to tremble.

“Who are you?” I asked.

Laughter sounded on the other side.

“The one who is opening the door behind you now.”

Rico did not have time to turn around. The kitchen door opened, and Vittorio Moretti stood there, holding Elena’s old phone in his hand.

“You listened to the recording,” he said. “Now you will understand why this boy must not reach morning alive…”
