At the moment when two teenagers clapped beside eight-year-old Leo’s ears, everyone in the hall was laughing — and only I stopped playing.
This was the wedding of New York’s richest families. White roses descended from the ceiling, crystal glasses touched one another, while the small silver metronome attached in front of my white piano began trembling from the noise.
Leo stood at the edge of the dance floor. His black suit was too big for him, headphones hung around his neck, and he held both hands tightly over his ears. Every laugh raised his shoulders even higher.
“Come on, dance, Leo,” one boy called and bent theatrically in front of him.
“Maybe he can’t hear the music?” the other snickered and began clapping directly beside his ear.
Leo stepped backward.
No one stopped.
Neither the family’s guests, nor the waiters, nor the people who a few minutes earlier had been singing toasts to his father.
But my fingers froze on the keys. I remembered my sister Mia’s hospital bills, the receipts scattered around our small apartment, and the manager’s warning: “Play, smile, and do not attract Dante Moretti’s attention.”
But at that moment I no longer cared about the job.
I closed the piano lid.
The music in the hall suddenly stopped.
Hundreds of heads turned toward me. Most of all, I felt Dante Moretti’s gaze. He stood at the other end of the hall, in a black suit, holding a motionless glass. The men beside him stopped talking.
I walked toward Leo. The small silver moon attached to the sleeve of my blue dress jingled lightly with my steps.
“Hello, Leo. I’m Clara.”
First he looked at the moon, then at my face.
“There is too much noise, isn’t there?” I asked quietly. “We can play more slowly. Or not play at all.”
His hands lowered slightly.
“We don’t need to dance,” I continued. “Only one step. Then a pause. Or we can imagine all these people as badly made furniture.”
An almost imperceptible smile appeared at his lips.
I extended my hand toward him, but did not come closer.
“You don’t have to take my hand. If you want, hold the sleeve of my dress.”
Several seconds passed. Then Leo extended two fingers and pulled the blue fabric near my wrist.
I returned to the piano and played only three soft notes.
“One,” I whispered.
Leo took a step.
“Two. Now a pause.”
We almost did not dance. But after every pause, a little more air appeared in his breathing.
When the song ended, I raised my hand so that they would not start clapping.
Leo let go of my sleeve.
“Blue,” he said.
“Yes. Blue.”
“Calm blue.”
A heaviness appeared in my throat.
“I saw you, Leo.”
He nodded.
When I turned back, Dante Moretti was standing five steps away.
“You stopped the music,” he said.
“Yes.”
“No one does that at my wedding.”
My legs were trembling, but I did not lower my eyes.
“Someone had to stop the cruelty.”
Dante looked at me for a long time. Then he looked at Leo, who for the first time throughout the evening was no longer covering his ears.
In the morning the manager called me and said that they no longer needed me.
At noon a black car stopped in front of my building.
When Dante Moretti came up the stairs and saw my scraped door, I understood that I would no longer be able to disappear.
I left the chain on the door.
“Why did you come?”
There was no threat in his voice.
“Leo asked to see you.”
These words frightened me more than any threat. Dante took a dark-brown folder from his pocket, tightened his fingers around its edge, and said to me:
“In this folder there is something that no one has noticed for years. But you noticed it on the very first evening.”
His hand slowly moved toward the folder’s clasp…
His hand slowly moved toward the folder’s clasp, but I did not open the door all the way.
“First tell me whether Leo is all right.”
Dante lowered his eyes. Just then I noticed that he had a small cut on the knuckles of his right hand, as if he had been hitting a wall all night.
“Physically, yes,” he told me. “But since we left the wedding, he has been repeating one word.”
“Which one?”
“Blue.”
A cough came from behind me. My sister was sitting on the sofa, a blanket wrapped around her knees, and fatigue written on her face.
“Clara, who is it?” she asked me.
“The person whose child was mocked yesterday by an entire hall that left him alone,” I answered and looked at Dante.
Dante nodded to Mia.
“I am Dante Moretti.”
Mia turned pale.
“I know who you are.”
“Then you also know that I did not come for nothing.”
He placed the folder on the table. My sister’s hospital receipts lay beneath it, so the heavy sound of the paper was strangely clear.
“Leo’s mother, Elena, died three years ago,” he began. “She thought Leo was afraid of noise. Everyone said that we simply had to get used to it. Even the doctors. But yesterday, when you sat beside him, he used a word for the thing he needed for the first time.”
“I did nothing special.”
“That is exactly what is special. You did not force him to speak. You did not touch him without permission. You left him space.”
Dante opened the folder. Inside were children’s drawings. The same thing was on every sheet: a black square, a small blue crescent, and four dots.
“What does this mean?” I asked.
“No one knows. But yesterday, when he saw the moon on your dress, he touched this drawing with his finger.”
My heart began beating quickly.
“Why me?”
“Because you studied music. Elena’s therapist said Leo communicates through rhythms. Elena left recordings, but the family doctor said they meant nothing. And I…” Dante tightened his jaw, “I solved everything with money for years and did not realize that my son was calling me for help.”
I looked at the small memory card placed in the folder.
“What is here?”
“Elena’s last recording.”
“Why haven’t you listened to it until now?”
Dante looked at me for the first time with an expression as if he were afraid of the answer.
“Because the file had been deleted. Yesterday my man restored part of it. And this morning I learned that someone tried to delete it again.”
Silence descended over the room. Only the old motor of the refrigerator hummed.
“What are you asking me?” I asked.
“You will work with Leo for three weeks. Not as a nanny. As a music therapist.”
“I haven’t even finished the course yet.”
“I know.”
“I cannot pay for treatment. My sister needs treatment.”
“I will cover all expenses.”
“And in return?”
Dante did not answer.
That silence warned me that the matter was not only about helping a child.
The next day I went to the Moretti house. In the enormous building, every clock showed the same time, as if they could rewrite time in the family too. Leo sat in the corner of the room arranging small wooden cubes.
“Leo, Clara has come,” Dante told him.
The child did not look toward me. He made four equal taps on the table with his finger.
I repeated the same rhythm.
Leo stopped.
Then he added a fifth tap.
“This is new,” I said.
Dante stepped back.
“Four taps were repeated in Elena’s recordings. There had never been a fifth.”
Leo took one of the cubes, pulled out a small folded paper from inside, and held it straight out to Dante.
Dante opened it. One sentence was written: “Father must not see.”
At that same moment all the telephones in the house rang simultaneously.
Dante answered. He listened for several seconds, then his face changed.
“Clara, stay in Leo’s room. Lock the doors.”
“What happened?”
He slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who tried to delete Elena’s recording has now entered the house…”
The person who tried to delete Elena’s recording has now entered the house.
Heavy steps sounded in the corridor. Dante stepped in front of Leo, while I led the boy to the wall, where the noise reached less.
“Don’t be afraid,” I whispered. “Four taps and a pause.”
Leo placed his fingers on the table.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
A pause.
The room door opened. Dante’s older brother, Vito Moretti, entered, with a calm smile on his face, but his eyes shining with coldness.
“Such protection and such panic only because of one simple recording?” he asked.
“You should not be here,” Dante told him.
“This is my family too.”
Vito looked toward me.
“You are the musician who ruined the wedding.”
“I am the person who did not take away your son’s right to be left alone,” I answered.
Dante’s face tightened.
“Enough.”
Vito laughed.
“The child does not understand the meaning of his own words. All of this is accidental sounds.”
Leo picked up a cube and dropped it on the floor. The memory card placed inside slid across the wooden floor.
Vito’s smile disappeared.
Dante picked up the card.
“Now let us all listen,” he said.
The recording was old. First Elena’s quiet breathing was heard, then her voice.
“If you found this recording, it means that Leo finally managed to show the way. Dante, I did not die in a car accident.”
The air in the room seemed to disappear.
Dante closed his eyes.
Vito turned toward the door.
“This is falsified.”
In the recording Elena continued:
“Vito has been using Leo’s condition against Dante for years. He pays doctors to leave the child’s needs unproven. He wants to remove Dante from control and manage the family’s finances himself. On the night when I was going to hand the documents to Dante, Vito ruined my car’s brakes.”
Dante looked at Vito.
“You told me that the brakes had broken accidentally.”
“Dante, this woman was terminally ill. She may have imagined everything.”
“Then why were you trying to delete the recording?” I asked.
Vito fell silent.
At the end of the recording Elena’s voice was barely audible:
“Leo cannot say everything with words. But he remembers rhythm. Four taps means: Mother. Five means: danger. If he repeats five taps, do not trust Vito.”
Leo tapped five times on the table.
Vito turned pale.
Dante went up to him.
“Were you at the car that night?”
“Do not come near me.”
“Answer me.”
“I was protecting your family!”
“Did you kill his mother?”
These words struck the walls.
Vito stepped back. Just then Dante’s security brought a police investigator and a prosecutor into the room. Dante had prepared everything in advance, but no one had yet been handcuffed. The recording needed laboratory confirmation.
Vito smirked at me.
“You think this will be enough? I know everyone in this city.”
“But I no longer need this city’s trust,” I told him. “I only need a record of the truth.”
The investigator took the memory card.
Dante extended his hand to Leo, but stopped before touching him.
“May I?”
Leo himself grasped his hand.
This happened for the first time.
I thought everything was over. But that same evening, when the transfer of money for Mia’s doctor at the clinic was confirmed, a message came to my phone from an unknown number.
“Elena’s recording is only the first file. If you find out who was the first witness to the fifth tap, Leo’s life will also be in danger.”
A photograph was attached to the message.
In the photograph Leo stood at the back door of the wedding hall, and behind him was the man who was considered Dante’s most loyal guard.
I called Dante. He answered immediately.
“Clara, where is Leo?”
“In your house.”
“No,” he said, and for the first time genuine fear sounded in his voice. “I am standing in his room now. His bed is empty…”
