Part 4 — At the Wedding They Mocked My Autistic Son, and I Stopped the Music — Dante Moretti’s Face Suddenly Turned Pale

His bed was empty.

Dante said these words to me, and for several seconds neither of us said anything.

Then everything began at once.

Dante Moretti called security, the investigator blocked the city exits, and I tried to bring Mia from the clinic. But I immediately recognized the man standing behind Leo in the photograph received on the phone.

It was Rafael — Dante’s oldest guard, the man who had stood by the door throughout the wedding evening.

“Rafael took Leo,” I told Dante.

“He would never touch my son.”

“You yourself said that not everyone could have betrayed you. Perhaps you trust exactly him too much.”

Dante fell silent.

His lawyer, Sergio, called him immediately.

“Dante, no unauthorized action. The police are on the way.”

“My son has been kidnapped.”

“I know. But if you send your people into the street, Rafael will panic and may hurt the child.”

“I will give you money if you find his location.”

“I do not need money. I need testimony against your brother.”

Dante hung up.

I enlarged the photograph again. A small copper plaque was visible on the back door. Written on it was the address of an old music studio that had belonged to Elena.

“He is here,” I said.

Dante took the photograph from me.

“This studio has been closed for ten years.”

“Does Leo know this place?”

“His mother played there.”

“Then it is not closed for him.”

Twenty minutes later we stood in front of the old studio. Rain struck the iron roof as if the whole city were trying to warn someone.

Dante took out a gun.

“I will go in.”

“No. If Leo is afraid, he will see your gun.”

“Clara, there may be an armed person there.”

“And if he is waiting for me in Leo’s room, he will need calm music most of all.”

Dante looked at me for several seconds, then hid the gun.

“If something happens, come back out.”

“If Leo is there, I will not come out alone.”

Inside there was the smell of dust and old wood. Photographs of Elena’s concerts hung on the walls. In one corner stood a piano, on whose lid four dots had been drawn with blue chalk.

We heard Leo’s rhythm from deep inside.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

A pause.

Tap.

Rafael shouted:

“Stay back!”

His voice echoed through the studio.

Leo was sitting on a chair, holding his hands over his ears. Rafael stood beside him, but his gun was lowered.

“I did not harm him,” he said. “Vito told me that I would hide the child temporarily until Dante calmed down.”

Dante took one step forward.

“Where is Vito?”

“He is going to the port. He is planning to escape from there.”

Rafael handed me a small recording.

“He left this for me. He said that if I did not take the child, he would drag me into Elena’s death case too.”

Vito’s voice was heard clearly in the recording:

“Dante always realizes the truth late. When Leo disappears, he will sign everything.”

Dante lowered his eyes.

“You cannot escape your own voice,” I told Rafael.

“I was already escaping it.”

“Now stop.”

Rafael placed the gun on the floor and raised his hands.

Leo extended his fingers toward me.

I did not rush at him. I went slowly and placed the sleeve of my dress into his hand.

“One,” I whispered.

He inhaled.

“Two. Pause.”

Dante knelt in front of us.

“Leo, I am here.”

The child looked at him and said clearly for the first time:

“Father.”

Dante’s face changed. The man whom the whole city mentioned with fear was, at that moment, only a father.

The police found Vito at the port within several minutes. He had Elena’s old technical report about the car, money transfers, and false records from the doctor. The investigation took months, but this time the truth no longer rested only on Dante’s word.

Vito was arrested. The doctor admitted that he had taken money. And the two teenagers from the wedding were expelled from school because of the video mocking Leo, and their families publicly apologized.

That same evening Dante told me:

“You may also have a reason to be angry with me. For a long time I mistook my power for love.”

“I do not need your power.”

“I know. That is why I trust you.”

Later Sergio told us that an investigation could also have been started against Dante if he obstructed justice. Dante signed all the documents and testified against part of his security team.

For the first time he lost the desire for control.

And exactly then Leo’s recovery began.

Three weeks later Mia returned home from the hospital. I did not take Dante’s money as a gift. He transferred it directly to the hospital fund, while I started a small music studio in Queens.

Only two children came on the first day.

One was frightened by the sound of the window, the other by the unfamiliar room. I did not tell them to calm down. I simply placed the chairs so that the exit was always free.

Leo came every Tuesday.

He already used words too, but he still did not abandon rhythm.

Four taps meant: “I want to be here.”

Five — “I do not like something.”

One day he tapped six times.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Leo drew a small house on the board, and beside it three people: me, Mia, and himself.

“A new house,” he said.

I smiled.

“Yes. A new house.”

Months later, on the first morning of winter, snow could be seen through the window of my studio. Mia was putting a kettle in the kitchen, while Leo sat on the floor coloring a blue moon on a sheet of paper.

I no longer wore my old blue dress. I removed the small silver moon from its sleeve and hung it on the studio door. Every time the door opened, the moon jingled lightly.

!!!  No one could stop the mafia boss's son until I approached him—and the color instantly drained from Rico's face.

That evening I received a letter from Dante.

“I miss Leo. And I do not know how to return in such a way that you do not again need to save anything.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote to him:

“Do not return as before. If you ever come, come only as a father who is able to listen.”

He wrote me only one word:

“I’ll try.”

I did not reply.

Not because I hated him.

But because for the first time I no longer needed to give up my own peace for someone else’s attempt.

The next morning Leo called me in front of the piano. He played four notes, stopped, and instead of my hand, placed his own fingers on the keys.

The silver moon was still jingling on the door.

Leo said calmly:

“Now I am playing.”

And for the first time, I no longer needed music to save him.

Missed the beginning?
