My husband and his lover put something in my wine and forced me to drink it, but my calm voice changed Daniel’s face

I was standing behind the velvet curtain of the dining room when Vanessa poured white powder into my wineglass, while my husband quietly asked her whether it was enough.

The powder immediately disappeared into the red wine.

“Should I add more?” Daniel asked.

“No,” Vanessa answered. “This much is completely enough.”

There was such lightness in her voice, as if she were adding sugar to coffee. And I squeezed the edge of the curtain so tightly that my fingernails turned white.

For three months I had been quietly investigating Daniel. His bank statements, hotel bills, jewelry receipts, and the apartment rented at the other end of the city were already kept in my study, in a small wooden box. I knew about Vanessa too. Daniel’s “executive assistant” helped him with more than just work.

But that evening I saw something else.

I saw how a small white packet touched her hand. I saw how Daniel checked the hallway. And I heard Vanessa say:

“Today this woman will finally be silent.”

Then I entered the room.

The color drained from Daniel’s face. Vanessa stopped smiling only for a moment, then picked up my glass and held it out toward me.

“Drink, Claire.”

The candles on the table flickered. A small ring of white foam moved on the surface of the wine. I felt coldness in my throat, but showed nothing on my face.

“What did you put inside?” I asked.

The ticking of the clock sounded in the room.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“There was no need to mention her name,” he whispered.

“Why?” Vanessa shrugged. “If she is so sure of herself, is she afraid of one glass?”

They expected me to scream. They expected me to cry, smash the glass against the wall, and then declare me hysterical themselves.

But I was no longer the quiet wife whom Daniel had regarded as his shadow for years.

Before I married him, I was a prosecutor. In courtrooms I had learned that the most dangerous person is not the one who shouts loudly. The most dangerous one is the person who leaves the evidence untouched.

I took the phone from my bag.

Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“You will put the glass on the table.”

!!!  Mis suegros se burlaron cuando pedí ayuda para comprar una casa, pero meses después llegaron con maletas y mi suegro dejó de sonreír

“What?”

“Right now.”

Something in my voice stopped Daniel. Vanessa slowly put down the glass. First I photographed the glass, then the wine bottle, the silver spoon, and the small packet lying at the edge of the table. Her fingerprints were visible on the packet.

Daniel suddenly reached out his hand.

I stepped between him and the packet.

“Don’t touch it.”

“Claire, come to your senses. This is just nonsense.”

“If you touch it, I will tell the police that you tried to destroy evidence.”

His face changed.

For the first time Vanessa looked at him with fear.

“You said everything was calculated,” she uttered.

“Shut up,” Daniel hissed through his teeth.

I was already dialing the emergency number.

“Claire, don’t call,” Daniel said. “Come on, let’s talk.”

At these words I almost laughed.

For years Daniel had spoken to me only when it was convenient for him. Now, for the first time, he was afraid of my calmness.

The operator answered me. I was listening to her voice when the lock of the entrance door suddenly turned. Daniel looked at Vanessa. Vanessa shook her head.

The sound of heavy steps approached from the hallway.

And someone said behind the door:

“Mrs. Hayes, open the door. We have a warrant…”

The police voice sounded again behind the door.

“Open the door!”

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Claire, if you do this now, you will destroy everything.”

“You destroyed everything yourself,” I answered.

Vanessa ran toward the door, but I grabbed her.

“No one touches anything.”

The officers entered in a few seconds. Their wet shoeprints remained on the marble floor. My lawyer, Miranda, followed the senior officer. I had called her before dialing the number.

“Has the glass been moved?” she asked.

“Neither the packet nor the spoon.”

Miranda looked at Daniel.

“Then it will be better for everyone if you touch nothing.”

Vanessa was trembling.

“It was only a joke.”

“A joke is something a person shows to the police immediately,” I said.

The officer placed the packet in a special bag. The second officer demanded Daniel’s phone.

Daniel refused.

“You cannot take it from me.”

“We have a court order,” the officer answered.

Daniel looked at me as if he could still frighten me.

!!!  She left me alone at our children's funeral, then returned to my door with her family—and her smile suddenly disappeared

At that moment Vanessa’s phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. She answered and immediately went pale.

“What do you mean, they already know at the laboratory?” she whispered.

Miranda and I looked at each other.

The officer held out his hand.

“Hand over the phone as well.”

Vanessa did not hand it over.

The next second her screen lit up. One message appeared.

“If they found everything, Daniel knows that you are next…”

As soon as she read the final words of the message, Vanessa’s phone fell from her hand. The screen struck the floor and lit up again.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Who wrote to you?”

“You said no one knew!” Vanessa screamed.

The officer stood between them.

“Stay where you are.”

The laboratory specialist arrived forty minutes later. We were sitting in the small living room beside the kitchen. My glass stood on the table in a transparent protective box. The room smelled of chemical liquid and a burned candle.

Daniel sat in an armchair and pressed his knee with his fingers.

“This is a mistake,” he repeated. “The substance was not dangerous.”

“Then why did you hide it?” I asked.

“Because Vanessa did something stupid.”

Vanessa raised her head.

“I was not the only one who decided.”

Daniel looked at her as if he were trying to kill her with his eyes.

The specialist took the examination results from a folder.

“The substance contains a powerful sedative,” he said. “In a large dose it can stop breathing. The amount found in this glass could not have entered the wine accidentally.”

Silence fell over the room.

I looked at Daniel.

“Now tell me, was this also a joke?”

His lips opened, but he could not produce a sound.

Vanessa hid her face in her hands.

“He told me Claire would only sleep for a little while. Then they would put something in her bag and call the police. As if she were stealing Daniel’s money.”

“What did you mean?” the officer asked.

Vanessa did not look toward him.

“Forged receipts. Accounts. Everything that would make her look guilty during the divorce.”

Daniel jumped up.

!!!  Sono entrato nella stanza d’ospedale pronto a uccidere la donna accusata di minacciare mio figlio, ma l’ho trovata coperta di sangue con un bastone spezzato puntato contro il mio petto

“You are a liar!”

“I have it recorded in your voice!” Vanessa shouted. “You yourself told me that if Claire ended up in prison, the house and the accounts would remain yours.”

Miranda quietly opened her bag and placed several receipts on the table.

“We have already found all of this,” she said. “The hotel records, the contract for the second apartment, and transfers to Vanessa’s account.”

Daniel collapsed onto the chair.

My body was still trembling, but fear slowly turned not into anger, but into clarity.

At that moment a call came to my phone. The number was unknown.

“Mrs. Hayes,” a man’s voice said, “if you want to know who supplied your husband with this substance, come to the old station warehouse in the morning. Alone.”

The call ended.

Miranda saw my face.

“Who was it?”

I did not have time to answer. A message arrived immediately.

There was only one photo in it: Daniel, Vanessa, and another man who had been standing near our house three months earlier.

Under the photo it said: “This was only the first glass…”
