My husband chose his lover in the hospital, but months later the man standing beside me changed her face

At the moment when my husband told me that he would spend the night with another woman, there was a doctor’s conclusion in my bag that I was supposed to show him.

Cold Chicago rain beat against the hospital windows. It was seven o’clock in the evening when the on-duty doctor from Lakeview Memorial called me.

“Are you Ethan Whitmore’s emergency contact?” he asked me.

“I’m his wife. What happened?”

“It’s a minor accident. He’s conscious, but please come.”

On the way I thought of only one thing: maybe he had broken a bone, maybe he had injured his head. In recent weeks Ethan had been strangely distant from me, but I still could not imagine that when I opened the hospital door, he would be holding another woman’s hand.

I entered the observation room and stopped.

Vanessa Cole was lying on the bed. She had a small white bandage at her temple. Ethan was sitting beside her. A dark stain of blood ran across the shoulder of his shirt, while with his fingers he was straightening Vanessa’s blanket.

Vanessa saw me first.

Then Ethan raised his head.

He did not let go of her hand immediately.

“Claire?” he said. “What are you doing here?”

“The hospital called me,” I answered. “I am still your wife. Remember?”

The monitor’s bitter beeping sounded in the room. My wedding ring was cold on my finger. After a few seconds I took it off and put it in my coat pocket.

Ethan stood up and positioned himself in front of Vanessa, as if I were the danger.

“You were with her when this happened,” I told him.

“Claire, now is not the time for this.”

“You told me you had a meeting in Oak Brook.”

“At the last minute the meeting was moved downtown.”

“A meeting? The two of you?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I think this conversation should not happen today.”

“You’re right,” I said. “This conversation should have happened months ago.”

Ethan clenched his teeth.

“Enough.”

“Is my voice enough, or are you tired of the lies?”

His eyes darted toward the door. He did not care how much I was hurting. He was afraid someone would hear us.

The Whitmore family had been building houses, hotels, and shopping centers in Chicago for almost forty years. And for nine years I had been creating the spaces that they later published under their family name.

I met Ethan when he was thirty-three, while I was running a small architectural studio in Lincoln Park, from two rented rooms above a bakery. He told me that he wanted to win for his father through his own strength. I remade his project in two days.

He won.

Six months later he proposed to me.

Then he asked me to help with only one more project. One became four, and four became the entire design department.

“We are building this together,” he would tell me every time I spoke about returning to my own studio.

In the hospital room I understood for the first time how dearly those words had cost me.

“How long has it been?” I asked.

Ethan looked away.

“Not now.”

“How long has it been, Ethan?”

Vanessa said quietly:

“Almost a year.”

Ethan quickly looked toward her.

“Vanessa.”

But it was already too late.

My birthday. Thanksgiving. Christmas at his parents’ house. The night when I reheated dinner twice and he returned at three in the morning.

!!!  Part 4 — After the Divorce, My Father Ordered Me to Block My Cards, and That Same Evening the Strange Smile Disappeared from My Ex-Husband’s Face

Almost a year.

Vanessa held her head.

“My head hurts.”

Ethan’s body immediately turned toward her. His hand reached toward her side again, and his voice softened.

The doctor came in.

“Mrs. Cole will remain under observation for several more hours. She cannot be alone tonight.”

“I’ll stay,” Ethan said.

He said it so quickly, as if he had prepared the answer in advance.

I looked at him.

“Do you want to know why I wrote to you today that we had an important conversation at home?”

Ethan frowned.

“About what?”

I put my hand into my bag. My fingers touched the folded medical sheet. But at that same moment heavy footsteps sounded in the corridor, and someone forcefully opened the room door…

The door opened all the way and a tall, thin man entered. He held a black leather folder in his hand. I knew him—Daniel Reed, the Whitmore family’s lawyer for twenty-five years.

The metal bracelet of his watch lightly jingled with every movement.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, “I need to speak with you urgently.”

Ethan looked at him irritably.

“Now is really not the appropriate time.”

“It is exactly now.”

Daniel’s gaze stopped on me.

“Mrs. Bennett, you must hear this too.”

Vanessa pulled the blanket higher.

“What is happening?” she asked.

“First we need to know this,” I said and took the doctor’s sheet from my bag. “Ethan, I went to the doctor today. For several weeks I have been dizzy and having trouble breathing. I have severe iron-deficiency anemia.”

Ethan’s face did not change.

“There is treatment.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you talking to me as if you were fatally ill?”

His words stuck into my chest. Daniel lowered his head, as if he had already understood something.

“Is there something else?” he asked me.

I could not answer.

“Claire?” Impatience appeared in Ethan’s voice for the first time.

The lower corner of the sheet trembled in my hand. The doctor had ordered one more test that same day. The result was not yet completely confirmed, but one indicator was clear enough for the doctor to say directly: I might be pregnant.

I was supposed to tell him at home.

There, where I still thought my marriage meant something.

“I may be having a baby,” I said.

Every sound in the room disappeared.

Vanessa raised her head.

Ethan looked first at me, then at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?”

“The doctor suspected pregnancy. I have a repeat examination tomorrow.”

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

“That’s impossible,” she whispered.

Ethan turned sharply toward her.

“Why is it impossible?”

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“Because you told me Claire could not have children.”

Blood roared in my ears.

“You told her that?”

Ethan took one step back.

“Vanessa, be quiet.”

“You said the marriage was already only a formality,” she continued. “You said the doctors had killed your hope years ago.”

I looked at Ethan.

“The doctor never said I could not have a child.”

“Claire, I just…”

“You simply decided my life for me.”

Daniel opened the folder on the small table beside the bed. Inside were several colored sheets and an envelope sealed with a golden stamp.

“I received these documents last night,” he said. “On your father-in-law’s instructions.”

Ethan raised his head.

“Where is my father?”

“At his own home. But he clearly instructed me to give this only to Mrs. Bennett.”

Ethan reached toward the folder.

Daniel caught him by the wrist.

“No, Mr. Whitmore.”

“They are my family’s documents.”

“No. Not this time.”

I heard my heartbeat so loudly that I thought the monitor was monitoring me.

Daniel pushed the envelope toward me.

“Mrs. Bennett, you will find your signature here. You will also find a date that changes everything.”

Ethan came closer to me.

“Claire, don’t open it.”

“Why?”

“Because my father is ill and no longer knows what he is doing.”

Daniel looked directly at him for the first time.

“Your father is ill, but his mind is still very clear.”

Vanessa sat up in the bed.

“Ethan, what document is it?”

I touched the envelope. The wax of the seal seemed still warm.

Ethan said quietly:

“If you open this, there will be no going back.”

I saw his face and for the first time I could not find my husband there. Only a man who was hiding something from me stood there.

Daniel turned the folder toward me.

“Open it, Mrs. Bennett. Everything begins here.”

My fingers reached the sealed edge, but at that exact moment Vanessa picked up her phone and looked at the message received on the screen. Her expression changed.

“Ethan,” she said, “we also need to talk to you about this…”

Vanessa’s last words hung in the room. White light from the phone screen illuminated her face from below.

“What message is it?” I asked.

Vanessa hugged the phone to her chest.

“Nothing.”

“Then why did you turn pale?”

Ethan tried to look at what she was holding.

“Show me.”

“No.”

That one word changed everything. Ethan turned toward Vanessa, but Daniel stepped in front of me.

“The envelope first,” he said.

I broke the wax with my fingernail. The small sound seemed to split the room in two.

Inside were three sheets, a small memory card, and an agreement certified by a notary.

My name was written on the very first page.

“Architectural concepts created by Claire Bennett and the income received from them belong to the author—Claire Bennett.”

My signature was visible below. The date was nine years earlier—two weeks before our wedding.

“What is this?” Ethan asked.

Daniel answered calmly:

“An agreement of rights drawn up by your father. He knew that Claire had created all the main projects. He knew that you were registering her work under the company’s name.”

I was looking at the sheet, but the letters blurred in tears.

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Because Mr. Ethan hid a copy of the agreement and, only after marrying you, lied to you as if all of this were a family collaboration.”

“That’s a lie!” Ethan shouted. “My father signed it, but the projects were created with the company’s resources.”

Daniel took out the memory card.

“That is why this exists.”

He inserted the card into the hospital television. An old office appeared on the screen. The date of the video was nine years earlier. I was sitting at the desk and opening the presentation of the project. A young Ethan stood behind the camera.

“You won because my wife created all of this,” his voice could be heard saying. “If Father finds out that she is the author, he will transfer the contract to himself. I’ll get her to sign it without her understanding.”

!!!  Part 4 — My wife demanded to return to my daughter’s wedding, but her smile disappeared when opening the gift

In the video I raised my head.

“Ethan, what are you saying? The agreement is supposed to protect both of us, isn’t it?”

“Of course, darling,” he answered. “It’s just a formality.”

The video stopped.

Silence fell over the room.

Vanessa covered her mouth with her hand.

And I was looking at my own past and understood that even when I trusted his words, he was already gathering evidence against me.

“There is one more sheet,” Daniel said.

It was a document transferring shares. Richard Whitmore, Ethan’s father, had transferred the controlling share of the company to me if Ethan ever tried to use my work or property during a divorce.

Ethan struck the table with his hand.

“My father had no right!”

“He did,” I said. “And apparently you knew that such a document existed.”

He could not find an answer.

Vanessa’s phone lit up again. This time we all saw the message.

“If Claire finds out about the baby, the plan ends today.”

There was no sender’s name.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“Whose baby?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yours.”

Nothing could yet be seen in my abdomen, but a small life was growing there. And now I felt that I was not the only one deceived in this room.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

Vanessa began to cry.

“Ethan told me that if we destroyed your marriage, part of the company would go to me. But the baby… the baby is not his.”

Ethan froze.

“Vanessa, be quiet.”

“The baby’s father is his father,” she said. “Richard Whitmore. He knew everything. He told me that Ethan was destroying the company and that you had to protect yourself.”

Daniel’s phone rang. He listened, his expression changed, and he looked toward me.

“Mrs. Bennett, Richard Whitmore urgently wants to meet with you. But before you leave, there is one more thing you should know.”

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“This message was not only a warning. Someone already knows that you are pregnant, and that person is waiting for you below the hospital…”
