They threw me out from the Christmas table, but when I said whom the house belonged to, the smile disappeared from Vanessa’s face

Vanessa threw me out from the Christmas table while twenty-two relatives silently listened to her words and my son no longer looked me in the eyes.

All this was happening in my son Daniel’s house, in Connecticut, at fifteen minutes past nine in the evening. For three days I had been preparing dishes, washing the dishes, and arranging the table, but Vanessa presented each dish as if she alone had worked in the kitchen.

I said nothing. It had already been years since I hurried to answer her ironic looks. Vanessa called my clothes old-fashioned, corrected me when speaking with my grandchildren, and rolled her eyes every time my voice was heard at the table.

But that evening she needed an audience.

When I reached my hand toward one of the serving trays, Vanessa immediately pushed the dish away from me. The silver spoon struck the plate sharply.

“Please, do not touch anything,” she said loudly. “You have already caused enough embarrassment.”

I turned toward her.

“What exactly did I do?”

Vanessa smiled unpleasantly and straightened the golden hairpin from her hair.

“You brought twelve-dollar wine. You are wearing the same dress as last year. And you keep telling everyone as if you participated in paying for this house. This is very embarrassing for us.”

Several people sitting at the table shifted their gaze to their plates. Daniel was sitting beside her and held the fork as if it were a heavy object.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “do you think so too?”

He moved his lips, but did not make a sound.

Vanessa, however, stood up, opened the hallway door wide, and pointed with her hand toward the exit.

“This table is for people who truly help this family. You can eat somewhere else.”

The room fell silent. Only the ticking of the clock hanging on the wall could be heard.

“Mother,” my granddaughter Lily said almost in a whisper, “please, do not continue.”

“Be quiet, Lily,” Vanessa answered sternly.

My face burned as if I were standing beside a hot oven. For one moment I truly wanted to take my bag and run away from there. Then I remembered the small copper key lying in the inner pocket of my bag. It had a small wooden tag, and written on it by hand were the words: “Family house”.

Daniel gave me this key on the day we signed the house papers. Then he told me that this place would always also be my home.

Returning to the table, I carefully placed the napkin beside the untouched plate.

“You are right, Vanessa,” I said calmly. “The people sitting at this table have the right to know who truly paid.”

She crossed her arms.

“At last.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Have you never told her?”

The color changed in his face.

Vanessa immediately turned toward him.

“What should he have told me?”

I did not raise my voice.

“The down payment for this house was not paid from Daniel’s savings. I paid the entire one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

Someone’s glass slipped from their hand. Vanessa laughed nervously.

“This is ridiculous.”

“The mortgage is also in my name,” I continued. “Daniel’s credit history was very damaged at that time because his company went bankrupt. The bank did not give him a loan.”

Vanessa’s smile slowly disappeared. Daniel looked down at the table.

I stood up from the chair and threw my coat over my arm.

“You ordered the owner of the house to leave your own dining room,” I told Vanessa.

Then I reached toward my bag, because I knew that the heaviest truth for this family was still lying in the folder that I kept in a locked drawer in the car. My fingers moved toward the lock, and exactly then the sound of footsteps was heard in the hallway…

The footsteps in the hallway stopped. Everyone’s head turned toward the door at the same time.

My lawyer, Mr. Revaz, stood in the doorway. In one hand he held a dark-brown folder, and in the other a metal box with a small key. Drops of snow were melting on his coat.

Vanessa’s face immediately changed.

“Who are you?” she asked.

“The person who came here this evening at Marina’s request,” Revaz answered.

Daniel stood up.

“Mother, what is this?”

I looked at him. His voice was being heard for the first time, but it was already too late for surprise alone to be enough.

“First I had to answer your wife,” I told him. “She told me that I had created nothing here.”

Revaz placed the folder on the table. The edges of the papers made a soft rustling sound on the wooden surface.

“Marina, do you want me to read it?”

“No,” I answered. “This time I will say it myself.”

Vanessa leaned on the chair.

“This is all theater. You are trying to humiliate me in front of the guests.”

“No, Vanessa. I am only showing what the word ‘owner’ means.”

Revaz opened the first page. There were the bank stamp, the transfer date, and my signature. One hundred and eighty thousand dollars had been transferred from my account on the same day the contract for purchasing the house was signed.

Lily asked slowly:

“Grandmother, did you really buy this house?”

“I bought it,” I told her, “but I told your father then that I was doing it for his family.”

Daniel raised his head.

“Mother, I intended to return the money.”

“When?” I asked. “When your debt grew? When you told Vanessa that I was only living here temporarily? Or when you secretly planned to remodel my room?”

His face reddened.

Vanessa looked sharply at me.

“What remodeling of the room?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

At that moment I understood that everything between them was not as clean as they pretended with their smiles at the table.

Revaz took out the second page.

“This is the property extract. The house is entirely in Mrs. Marina’s name. Daniel has the right to live here only on the basis of a written agreement.”

Vanessa snatched the paper from his hand.

“There is some mistake here.”

“It is not a mistake,” Revaz said calmly. “The mistake was that neither of you was reading this agreement.”

Daniel’s sister, Elene, sitting at the table, asked quietly:

!!!  Part 4 — After Seven Years of Devotion, My Boss Ordered Me to Find Him a Wife, but His Face Changed for the First Time at My Answer

“Daniel, did you know?”

Daniel could not answer.

His silence no longer hurt me as it had a few minutes earlier. Now this silence was an answer.

“By ten o’clock tomorrow morning I want to know,” I told him, “why your wife gave everyone permission to think that this house was hers, and why you allowed it.”

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“If you leave, will you throw Daniel out of the house?”

“I am not throwing anyone out,” I answered. “I am simply no longer allowing my house to stand on someone else’s lie.”

Revaz opened the metal box. Inside lay a small memory device, with a date written on it.

Daniel suddenly went pale.

“Mother, you must not do this.”

“Why?”

“Because everything was not as you think.”

“Then tell me how it was.”

He lowered his voice.

“Do not play the recording.”

Revaz took the device in his hand and connected it to the small speaker placed on the table. Vanessa moved toward it, but Lily blocked her way.

“Mother, do not touch it.”

Even breathing stopped in the room. Revaz placed his finger on the button, Daniel closed his eyes, and I realized that now I would hear for the first time what my son said behind my back…

First a hissing sound came from the speaker, and then Daniel’s voice was heard. His voice was low, tired, and so familiar that I felt coldness in my stomach.

“Vanessa, Mother just needs to think that she has a share here. If she knows that she is only the legal owner, she will take everything away from us.”

Vanessa’s laughter was heard in the recording.

“She has taken nothing away from us. You asked her for the money yourself.”

“I know. But if she finds out that we are planning to sell the house, she will create problems for us.”

Someone at the table quietly exhaled. Lily covered her mouth with her hand.

The recording continued.

“The sales contract is already ready,” Vanessa said. “Let us move to a new city in January and pay off the debt.”

“We will need Mother’s signature.”

“I will handle it. Her old documents are with me.”

At that moment the ticking of the clock hanging on the wall disappeared. It was as if nothing else existed in the room except that voice.

Daniel collapsed into the chair.

“I did not mean it like that…”

I looked at him.

“You said it yourself.”

“Mother, I needed money. When the company collapsed, I lost everything. Vanessa convinced me that selling was the only way out.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Are you blaming everything on me now?”

“You said Marina would not find out anything!”

“Because you had been lying to her for years!”

“Enough,” Revaz said, but both of them could no longer stop.

I looked at the documents lying on the table. For all these years I had thought that my son needed time to get back on his feet. In reality, he had been using my patience as a plan for saving himself.

Revaz took out another sheet of paper.

“The recording is only part of it. Yesterday evening the notary called me. It turned out that someone had tried to submit an application to sell the property in the electronic ownership system.”

Vanessa froze.

“That is impossible.”

“Attached to the application was a power of attorney, as if Marina had signed it.”

I took the small copper key from my bag and placed it on the table. The wooden tag lightly rattled.

“This key opens the drawer of my study,” I said. “I kept my personal documents there. Three weeks ago I found the drawer open.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Did you take Mother’s documents?”

For the first time Vanessa could not think of an answer.

Revaz turned on his phone and showed a camera recording on the screen. It was two o’clock at night. In the hallway Vanessa was quietly entering my room, holding my lock and folder in her hands.

Tears came to Lily’s eyes.

“Mother, were you stealing Grandmother’s house?”

Vanessa looked at her, but the child turned her face away.

In my own heart I felt only exhaustion. Not revenge. Not victory. Exhaustion.

Revaz put the phone into his pocket.

“Tomorrow morning we are going to the police. Until then, not a single document must disappear from the house.”

Vanessa stood up.

“You cannot prove anything to me.”

“The camera recording and the forged power of attorney are enough for a beginning,” I said.

Daniel buried his head in his hands.

At that same moment a message came to my phone from an unknown number. Only one sentence was written: “If you go to the police in the morning, you will learn the truth about Lily.”

I stared at the screen until my fingers grew cold. The sender had hidden the number, but at the end of the message there was one word — “Father”…
