Three Days Later I Found My Daughter Locked in the Yard, but Her Whisper by the Pool Changed the Neighbor’s Face

That morning I found my ten-year-old daughter locked in an iron cage in the neighbor’s yard, and her first words frightened me so much that for several seconds I even forgot to breathe.

For three days, Emily had not answered my calls. At first I told myself that she had lost her phone while staying with her mother, or that Sara was angry and was not allowing the child to call me. But on Sunday morning, when I called her number for the eighth time and again received only cold silence, I took the car keys.

It was ten in the morning at Sara’s house. A heavy chain hung on the yard gate, the curtains were fully drawn, and Jason’s large car stood on the gravel. I knocked on the door until the palm of my right hand began to hurt.

“Sara! Emily! Open the door!”

No one answered.

The neighbor, Mrs. Harris, ran toward me with a newspaper in her hands. Her fingers were gripping the newspaper so tightly that the paper folded in half.

“David, screams have been coming from there for three weeks,” she told me quietly. “Emily has not come outside anymore. Jason installed high floodlights around the yard.”

“Where is Sara?”

Mrs. Harris looked toward the house.

“Last night Jason was dragging several large black bags. He threw them into the pool.”

At that moment all my old suspicions came alive in my head at once: Emily’s shortened answers, her tense shoulders, that evening when she told me she wanted to stay one more night with me.

“Why didn’t you call me until now?” I asked.

“I thought it was a family quarrel. But now I know I was wrong.”

Mrs. Harris showed me the lower part of the fence. The iron wire pierced my palm, but I did not feel the pain at all. On the other side, the grass had grown up to the knees, dried leaves lay on the tiles, and the pool had green water with a strong, pungent smell.

In the far corner I noticed a blue cover. It had partly slipped off a large metal dog cage.

Emily was sitting inside.

Her knees were pressed to her chest. Her hair was tangled, her lips were cracked, and a yellow lighthouse-shaped hair clip held only one strand. I had bought that clip for her at a seaside market and told her that a lighthouse helped those who were lost return home.

!!!  Mother gave my brother my grandmother’s money and held out a paper for me to sign — but her smile disappeared when the lawyer arrived

“Emily, it’s me. I’m your father.”

Her eyes moved slowly.

“Dad?”

I grabbed the cage’s lock. The heavy padlock would not move. I took a garden cutter I found in the tool box, stuck it into the lock, and pulled with all my strength. The metal roared. When I pulled a second time, the mechanism broke.

Emily immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.

“I’m here, sweetheart. We’re leaving.”

“Not yet,” she whispered.

Her body suddenly stiffened. She was looking at the pool, not the house. Several large black shapes could be seen beneath the murky water.

“What is in there?” I asked.

She pressed her face against my shoulder.

“Dad, please don’t look. Just take me away.”

Mrs. Harris stopped by the fence.

“David, call the police.”

“Where is Sara, Emily?”

Her tear fell onto my shoulder.

“Mother was trying to stop him.”

The door of the house shifted slightly behind us. I froze. Jason’s car was still in its place, but the yard was so quiet, as if the entire house were hiding its breath.

I hugged Emily more tightly and moved toward the fence. Just then, at the back door of the house, the metal handle slowly went down. Mrs. Harris covered her mouth with her hand, while I reached for my phone with my free hand. Someone knocked three times from the other side of the door. Then a hoarse woman’s voice said:

“David, if you can hear me, let no one in until you open that folder…”

The sound of the door came again. Emily clung to my chest.

“Dad, it’s Mother’s voice.”

I answered the emergency-services operator on the phone and did not take my eyes off the house.

“I found the child, but there is someone else in the house. The door is locked from the outside.”

“Is anyone armed?” the operator asked.

Emily tugged at my sleeve.

“Jason left Mother inside. Mother was telling him, let me go.”

A few minutes later the yard filled with the sound of cars. Police officers climbed over the fence, a doctor wrapped Emily in a blanket, and I moved away from the pool. They pulled the first black bag from the water. Inside were only Emily’s backpack, clothes, and a shattered tablet.

“It is as if someone tried to erase her existence,” the police officer said.

Those words made my skin burn.

The second police officer ran to the back door and shouted:

“The lock is bolted from the outside!”

A heavy banging was heard from inside again.

Emily closed her eyes.

“It’s Mother.”

The police officer smashed the door. They found Sara on the floor, her hands tied with rope, but she was alive. She said only one thing:

“Jason went for that folder.”

“Which folder?” I asked.

Sara looked toward the small cabinet standing by the wall.

“The one hidden inside Emily’s clip…”

My hands froze at Sara’s words. Emily still had the yellow lighthouse-shaped clip in her hair, and one tooth was broken.

It was eleven o’clock on Sunday in the small examination room at the hospital. Raindrops ran down the window, and the sharp smell of antiseptic stood on the doctor’s desk. Emily sat on the bed, while Sara stood beside her, with a red mark from the rope visible on her wrist.

“You have to tell me everything,” I told Sara.

She lowered her eyes.

“For three months Jason had been using my accounts. He took out loans in my name and told me that if I told anyone, he would take Emily away from me.”

“Is that why she changed?”

“Because she overheard several conversations. Jason intended to run away, leaving the money on me. Emily tried to record it with her phone. He saw her.”

The police officer put a small transparent bag on the table. Inside were the broken clip and a miniature recorder.

“We found this inside the clip,” he said. “The recording is almost three hours long.”

Silence fell over the room. The police officer turned on the sound.

First Jason’s heavy breathing was heard.

“If you do not learn to keep silent, Sara, I will make everyone believe that you abandoned the child.”

Then Sara’s voice:

“Don’t touch Emily.”

Jason chuckled.

“I’ll throw her things into the pool, leave the car here, and leave the city as if you both ran away. And you will stay here until you make the necessary signatures.”

Emily squeezed my hand. Sara leaned against the wall. Something inside me finally shattered: I had trusted him because other adults were around and Jason always put on a friendly face.

My daughter’s quiet crying could also be heard in the recording. Then Jason said:

“No one will find that little clip either.”

The investigator in the room immediately looked at his phone.

“His location has appeared. Jason is at the city station.”

Sara asked me fearfully:

“Did he leave?”

The investigator shook his head.

“No. He is coming back here. There is another person sitting in his car.”

At that very moment my phone rang. The message from an unknown number contained only one sentence: “If you want Sara alive, tell the police that the recording does not exist…”

And below it I saw a photo sent by Jason: Emily’s empty room, with the box of the lighthouse-shaped clip I had given her lying on the bed.
