My ex-husband began humiliating me because of my pregnancy, but when I entered the hall, the smile suddenly disappeared from his face

I was standing backstage at the hotel when my ex-husband told journalists that I would never have the courage to show my face. I was five months pregnant and was stroking my stomach with my palm while his laughter sounded beyond the marble walls.

“Camilla is probably hiding at home now,” Jason said. “After a divorce, some women can no longer look at themselves.”

Vanessa Cole stood beside him in a silver dress and a diamond tiara. She was wearing Jason’s engagement ring. She was twelve years younger than me and smiled as if my pain were part of the evening’s program.

Gabriel Landon stood beside me and was fixing the clasp of my bracelet. His fingers were calm. Mine were frozen. A silver compass-shaped brooch, which my mother had given me before her death, was pinned to my black velvet dress. The tip of the brooch touched my stomach, as if reminding me that this time I had to choose the direction.

“If you want, we can leave through another exit,” Gabriel told me quietly.

At that moment, the baby moved inside me.

“I have wasted enough time hiding,” I answered.

Two years earlier, every newspaper had written the same things: infertile, unstable, embittered, changed. No one wrote that I had redesigned Jason’s company’s first proposal, created the presentation for investors, and convinced the person that a rejected idea was worth one million eight hundred thousand dollars.

Once Jason told me, “This company could not exist without your name.”

Then he stopped coming home.

Fertility treatment turned my life into needles, blood tests, and doctors’ calls. Every call began with the same words: “We are sorry.” First Jason stopped coming to appointments, then he stopped appearing at dinner, and finally I found hotel bills and deleted messages.

“Grief has made you paranoid,” he told me.

Three months after the last procedure, he asked me for a divorce. Vanessa appeared almost immediately. Jason insisted that they had met only after our marriage ended, but I already recognized lies in his eyes.

I moved to New York and quietly began my life again. That was when I met Gabriel. He saw my old work, where Jason’s name was not written, and offered me the idea of creating a foundation for women entrepreneurs. For fourteen months we built a five-hundred-million-dollar program together.

This evening was for its announcement.

I entered the hall.

Under the crystal chandeliers, the music stopped. Jason’s smile disappeared. His eyes fell directly on my stomach, then on Gabriel’s hand holding mine.

“Camilla?” His voice became strangely small.

“Hello, Jason.”

“You… are pregnant.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s face changed when she recognized Gabriel. He was the foundation’s main sponsor, who also supported her beauty pageants.

Jason tried to say something, but at that moment a waiter appeared between us. He was holding a cream-colored folder.

!!!  4. RÉSZ — Amikor a maffiafőnök fiának ágya mellett vért találtam, a doktor mosolya egyetlen pillanat alatt eltűnt

“This was left for you, Mrs. Bennett,” he told me.

There was no sender’s name. In the corner, only the familiar emblem of the Northern Reproductive Center could be seen. My fingers froze.

Inside the folder was a photograph of a newborn. It was a boy, wrapped in a light-blue blanket, with dark hair and a tiny fist beside his cheek. He had a plastic bracelet on his wrist.

“Baby Bennett — patient 2047.”

Patient 2047 was my number. It was written on every analysis, prescription, and treatment receipt. Jason had told me to destroy all the records.

Under the photograph, someone had written by hand: “The last treatment was not unsuccessful.”

The date stopped my breath. The boy had been born three years earlier, when Jason and I were still legally married.

I looked at Jason.

He did not look surprised.

He was frightened.

“What did you do?” I asked.

He grabbed my wrist, as if he could still lead me out of any room.

At that moment, a woman standing by the marble column said:

“Mr. Whitmore knows exactly whose child that is.”

Jason froze. The woman was holding a leather folder. I immediately recognized Dr. Evelyn Shaw, the embryologist who had called me three years earlier and told me that no viable embryo remained.

The doctor placed the folder on the table and put her hand on the first page. Jason stepped back.

“You signed an agreement,” she told him.

“You signed it too,” the doctor replied.

Then she looked at me and slowly extended the first document. My signature could be seen at the bottom…

The document lay on the table, but I was afraid to touch it. The signature was mine and, at the same time, it was not. The first letter curved exactly the same way, and at the end there was a long line, like my handwriting.

“I did not sign this,” I said.

Dr. Shaw lowered her head.

“I know. Jason invested eight million in the company that owned the clinic. He told the director that you were emotionally unstable and that another failure would destroy you.”

“If he was protecting me, why did he make me believe the embryo had died?” I asked.

Jason clenched his teeth.

“Your body was already enduring too much. I simply wanted certainty.”

“Without my permission?”

The doctor answered.

“The last cycle produced one viable embryo. It was not destroyed. It was implanted in another woman.”

The baby moved in my stomach, while every sound in the hall went silent.

“In whom?” I asked.

Jason looked at me for the first time.

“Lena Ortiz. She was the surrogate mother.”

“Where is the child?”

Jason answered before the doctor could say anything.

!!!  Seguí a mi hija después de descubrir su mentira de los viernes, pero el hombre que abrió aquella puerta me dejó sin aliento

“He is safe.”

That one word was enough. He knew where the child was.

“Is it a boy or a girl?”

“A boy. His name is Noah.”

For three years I had grieved a child whose name I did not know.

The doctor took out the last sheet and placed it in front of me.

“Lena is raising Noah. Jason paid her money and told her that the guardianship was temporary.”

“Does my son know about me?”

Jason looked away.

“No.”

An address was written on the sheet. In Connecticut, in a small town.

Gabriel took hold of my shoulders.

“Camilla, we can leave from here.”

I looked at the address and, for the first time, I was no longer crying. My son was alive. Somewhere, he was waiting for me.

At that moment, the phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. Dr. Shaw looked at it and lost all color.

“Don’t answer,” she told me quietly.

I answered anyway.

A child’s voice came from the other side:

“Mom?..”

I held the phone to my ear and could not breathe. The voice was very small, as if it were coming from the other end of the room.

“Who are you?” I barely asked.

In answer, I heard quiet breathing, then a frightened woman’s voice.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have called. I’m Lena.”

Jason moved toward me.

“Give me the phone.”

Gabriel stepped in front of him.

“One more step and I’ll call security.”

Lena was crying.

“Jason’s lawyer came this morning. He told me they would take Noah and that I could not tell you anything. I could not dare remain silent.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“At home. The doctor has the address. Noah knows your name only because he saw it in an old record. He asked me why his mother did not come.”

Rain struck the windows of the hall. In my hand was still the child’s photograph, already wrinkled at the corners.

Dr. Shaw opened the folder.

“Now I will tell everything,” she said. “One embryo remained from the last cycle. Its genetic material was yours and Jason’s. Jason gave the director a false consent form. I was afraid then because I depended on the clinic’s funding.”

“You called me and told me that it had not survived,” I said.

“Yes. That is my greatest crime.”

Vanessa stepped back.

“Jason, is this true?”

He looked at her, but could not answer.

“We had an agreement,” he finally said. “I was only creating a better future for the child.”

“With a life stolen from me?” I asked.

“You could not think clearly at that time.”

For years I remembered that phrase as his weapon. Now everyone in the hall heard it.

The doctor handed me the next sheet. It contained the transfer date, Lena’s name, my patient number, and the forged consent. Beside it lay the clinic’s bank transfer.

!!!  My Husband Pulled the Blanket Off Me and Called Me a Liar, but the Blood on My Legs Made His Blood Freeze and His Mother’s Smile Disappear

“Why didn’t Jason take the child immediately after birth?” I asked.

“Because he had to finish the divorce, was seeing Vanessa, and was afraid that the child’s existence would expose the forged documents,” the doctor said.

Jason struck the table with his fist.

“I was protecting Noah!”

“No,” I said. “You were protecting your own name.”

Gabriel called a lawyer. Within several minutes, cameras, documents, and phone records were collected in the room beside the hall. The doctor admitted that Jason had intimidated her into signing a secret agreement three years earlier.

Vanessa removed the ring.

“I was going to marry this man,” she said, her voice breaking. “He told me that his ex-wife was mentally ill.”

“You told everyone the same lie,” I said to Jason.

He tried to come closer to me.

“Camilla, we will resolve this as a family.”

“You should have resolved it as a family when my son was born.”

At that moment, a new message arrived on the doctor’s phone. She read it and her face changed.

“Lena says that Jason’s people have already arrived at her house.”

Jason was truly frightened for the first time.

I squeezed the photograph of the child in my hand.

But the last sentence of the message changed everything: “Noah has locked the door and says he will open it only for Camilla”…
