Part 4 — When my fiancée in the wheelchair quietly told me that everything would soon be hers, the man beside her lost color

No one expected the call from the hospital.

“Mr. Vasquez, please come immediately. The medical archive kept in your name has been changed.”

“Who changed it?”

“Your personal doctor’s assistant. And there is one more thing. Your file says that you died six months ago.”

The call ended.

Celeste put her hand against the wall.

“I did not know about this.”

“But you signed the statement.”

“Mauricio told me that it was only temporary.”

“You called everything ‘temporary’ while people were dying.”

The police entered the terminal. They handcuffed Mauricio. One of the officers took a second phone from his pocket. The last sent message was visible on the screen: “As soon as he arrives, the airplane will take off.”

They also handcuffed Celeste.

She fell to her knees before me.

“Damian, please. I loved you.”

“Love does not turn a person lying in bed into an enemy.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I. But you turned my fear into a plan.”

The police took them away. And I was still looking at the little card Alvaro had given me.

Inside it was my father’s voice.

“If my son is hearing this, know that your surname is not only a surname. I hid you because I was trying to protect you. But if they came to you before they came to me, trust only the one who never approached you for money.”

At the end of the recording he said three names. The third name was Marina.

We all turned toward her.

Marina’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your father saved my family. I worked in his house when I was a child, and on the night he was killed I took his last letter. For years I knew that Mauricio was close to you, but I had no evidence.”

“Why now?”

“Because you were already strong enough to learn the truth.”

That same day the police searched my house. In the basement they found a box with bank statements, false doctors’ reports, and a record of the money paid to the pilot.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hijo gritó algo imposible al salir del cementerio y mi hermana palideció cuando le ordené que se apartara

Mauricio denied everything at first.

Then he heard his own voice.

In the investigation room, at a wooden table, they played an audio recording for him. There he himself said that the bullet should have been enough. He himself said that the airplane was ready. He himself called my life “the last obstacle.”

Mauricio covered his ears with his hands.

“It is edited!”

The investigator turned off the audio.

“That is your voice.”

“I do not speak like that.”

“But you did speak.”

Mauricio heard himself for the first time the way I heard him. His face collapsed. I stood there and felt nothing except exhaustion.

Celeste’s lawyer refused to defend her on the third day.

“You asked me to hide evidence from you,” he told her. “I will not become part of a crime.”

Celeste called me twenty-one times that evening.

The next day she sent me a letter.

“Damian, listen to me at least once. I was not against you. If you return, I will explain everything.”

I did not keep the letter.

When I returned home, her room was empty. All the dresses had been taken from the wardrobe. On the table only one object remained—the little perfume bottle whose smell I had felt that night.

My old wheelchair stood by the window. Beside the seat hung the copper compass. The strap was torn, and the scratches from my fingers could be seen on its surface.

I picked it up in my hand.

For the first time I understood that this object was not a direction received from my father, but a symbol of my choice. The compass showed north, but I still had to go along the road myself.

Three weeks later the company went under temporary management. An independent audit revealed the funds stolen by Mauricio. The court confirmed his falsifications and attempted murder. Celeste partially confessed to the crime and received a sentence.

!!!  Three Weeks Before the Wedding, I Canceled Our House, but When I Asked Lukas One Question, His Smile Disappeared

I did not smile at a single hearing.

Not even when the judge said that my property would be returned.

Money could not return the months when I felt like a prisoner within the walls of my own house.

But peace still had a price.

Six months later I moved from Veracruz to a small coastal town. There I rented an old workshop and began importing rehabilitation equipment. Rebecca worked with me, although every morning she still scolded me.

“Do not skip the exercise today.”

“Today I am the director.”

“Directors have muscles too.”

“Mine are still being searched for.”

We laughed.

That first winter we put up a small fir tree in the house. Marina placed a wooden boat beneath it. Nika, Rebecca’s child, who often visited us, left beside it a picture drawn with colored pencils.

In the picture there was a man sitting in a wheelchair. The sea could be seen behind him. And in his hand he held a round, golden object.

“What is this?” I asked.

“A compass,” Nika answered. “So that you do not lose the way.”

That evening I received another message from Celeste.

“I ask only five minutes of you. After leaving prison I have nothing left. You are the only person who knows me.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I am no longer the man you knew. I cannot return.”

She answered me immediately.

“You still love me.”

I turned off the phone.

It was not revenge.

It was a boundary.

Several months later I managed to take several steps independently. Rebecca stood in the corner of the room and said nothing. Marina was crying by the window. And Nika was painting the wooden boat and every time the brush slipped, he wiped his fingers with an angry face.

I took one step.

A second.

A third.

My legs still hurt, but this time the pain no longer resembled defeat.

That night I left the old wheelchair by the door. I hung the compass on its handle, just as on that first terrible evening.

!!!  Tři dny po svatbě mi zemřela osmdesátiletá manželka a její advokát mi na pohřbu předal starou nemocniční tašku se slovy: „Nevybrala si vás náhodou“ — netušil jsem, že uvnitř najdu důvod, proč zemřeli moji rodiče

In the morning the sea wind entered the room and the copper compass rang softly.

I looked toward the north.

And for the first time I no longer waited for someone else to show me the way.

Missed the beginning?
