They Fired Me from the Company, but Ten Minutes Later Every Screen Turned Red and the Director’s Smile Froze on His Face

“If you fire me today, half of your company will shut down in ten minutes,” I told the founder’s son before he began to mock me.

Mauricio Salgado was laughing loudly. I stood motionless in front of him, feeling a small copper key in my palm. It was the key to the old lock at Station Seventeen, with a number engraved in red enamel. It had been with me for eighteen years.

My name is Laura Mendoza. I worked as the chief systems architect at “Salgado Energy” in Monterrey, although in reality I was known as the woman they called at night when a remote station stopped responding or the gas-pressure readings did not match one another.

The company transported gas through pipelines from Nuevo León to Coahuila and Tamaulipas. One small mistake meant more than merely a broken screen. It meant danger to thousands of people.

Don Ernesto Salgado, the company’s founder, hired me when we had an office in a rented room in Santa Catarina, next to a workshop. He was a strict man who checked everything, but with me he became different.

“If I am ever no longer here, Laura, do not trust the system more than people,” he told me once and gave me the key. “When it falls silent, you listen.”

At the time, his words seemed strange to me.

After Don Ernesto’s death, Mauricio became general director within a week. He began erasing every trace of his father. He replaced the wooden walls with glass partitions, dismissed experienced supervisors, and brought in twenty-seven-year-old Sebastián, who had seen a compressor station only in a presentation.

“Laura, this system is very outdated,” Sebastián told me one morning when he saw the old diagrams on my monitor.

“You can update the reports, but you cannot change the main control in one day.”

“Mauricio wants automation.”

“You cannot explain to gas that the new program is prettier.”

Mauricio heard this.

“Your problem is that you always say what cannot be done,” he told me.

“No. My problem is that I know what happens when a real pipeline is used as a learning board.”

After that, I was removed from the meetings. My reports were given other names. And the balancing method I had created was presented as Sebastián’s “new innovation”.

At four o’clock they brought me into the human-resources room. Mauricio was sitting there with Verónica, the new director.

“Your position is being eliminated,” Verónica told me. “If you sign today, you will receive six months’ salary.”

“Who approves the main system’s continuity protocol?” I asked.

Mauricio shrugged.

“We have the documentation. Sebastián is here too.”

I signed.

I handed over the laptop, pass, and work phone. Before closing the account, I requested to finish the last session according to security procedure. I put an old photograph in my bag, in which Don Ernesto and I stood in front of the first control center. But I kept the copper key in my pocket.

When I came out toward the lobby, Mauricio raised his coffee cup.

“Enjoy your retirement, Laura. This company no longer needs dinosaurs.”

“In ten minutes you will find out whether you were right,” I told him.

Everyone laughed.

I got into the car and looked at the building. In seven minutes, the operations center’s lights flickered. Three minutes later, every screen lit up red.

The system switched to safe mode.

An unknown number appeared on my phone. When I answered the call, I heard a frightened woman’s voice:

“Laura, Station Seventeen is no longer obeying us. We are in your office and Verónica found a folder with your father’s handwriting on it… now she is opening it…”

“Do not open it!” I shouted, but the call was already breaking off.

I started the car again and turned back toward the company building. Ten minutes had not even passed since my dismissal, but police cars and technical-assistance teams were already moving along the road. The dispatcher’s voice could be heard on the radio.

“Pressure is rising at Station Seventeen. The central control system is not responding.”

My fingers were gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my fingernails turned white. I knew this mode. Safe mode closed the pipeline during an accident, but only when the sensor data arrived correctly. And the new program delayed the data and stacked the shutdown commands on top of one another.

When I returned to the building, security blocked my way at the entrance.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Mendoza, but your pass has been canceled.”

“If you do not let me inside now, several cities may be left without gas. People may also be injured.”

The man began to hesitate. Just then the doors opened and Verónica came out. She was holding a dark wooden folder.

“You do not work here anymore,” she told me.

“Where did you find the folder?”

“It was hidden under the floor of your office.”

“I did not hide it.”

Verónica ran her fingers over the folder. An old wax seal could be seen on the edge, with the Salgado family’s first initial engraved on it.

“Mauricio said we will hand this over to the police.”

“Then do not open it yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if what I think is inside it is there, this will no longer be only a company matter.”

Mauricio’s voice sounded from behind us.

“Everything is already over, Laura.”

He was coming quickly, but that old confidence was no longer on his face. A coffee stain remained on his shirt sleeve. Sebastián stood behind him, staring at his phone as if he were looking for an answer on the screen.

“Close the valves manually,” I told Sebastián.

“The system is not accepting a command from me.”

“Because you changed the priority chain.”

Mauricio stepped forward.

“Be careful what you say. You signed your dismissal. Now any interference will be considered sabotage.”

“I did not begin the interference. You turned on an unfinished program.”

At that moment an alarm sounded from the operations center. The red lamp attached to the wall began flashing rapidly. Sebastián covered his face with his hands.

“Pressure at Station Seventeen is rising again,” he said. “If the central node collapses, the backup connection will also go down.”

Mauricio looked at me.

“You thought you controlled this company?”

“No. I knew how to save it.”

“Then save it.”

His voice sounded almost like a request, but anger still stood in his eyes.

“Cancel my access.”

“I cannot return to you what you no longer have.”

“Then find the old manual-control panel. It should be at Station Seventeen.”

“We removed that panel two years ago,” Sebastián said.

“No. You removed only its board. Don Ernesto left the main cable line in the wall.”

Verónica put the folder on the table.

“Until we open this, no one can go to the station. It says here that in an accident the responsible person must be determined.”

“This is not about responsibility,” I told her.

“Then what is it about?”

Mauricio reached toward the folder.

“Give it to me.”

Verónica stepped back.

“Mauricio, the seal is old. We should call a lawyer.”

“I am the head of this company!”

“That is exactly why you should not touch it,” I told him.

Suddenly my phone rang again. This time the screen showed the number of Don Ernesto’s lawyer, Alejandro Ruiz. He told me only one sentence:

“Laura, please be present when the folder is opened. I learned of its existence only today.”

“Who called you?”

The voice fell silent for several seconds.

“Your former boss met with me one week before his death. He said that if Mauricio ever fired Laura, the time would come to open this folder.”

Mauricio heard this and his face changed.

Verónica put a knife to the wax seal. Every sound in the room disappeared. Only the clicking of the red lamp could be heard.

The seal cracked.

Verónica slowly opened the folder and looked at the first sheet. Then she looked up at me.

“Laura… it says here that you were supposed to keep this not for the company, but for someone…”

“For whom?” I asked.

Verónica could not answer. Her fingers froze in the folder. Mauricio snatched the sheet from her hand, but as soon as he saw the second page, he lost his color.

“This is impossible,” he whispered.

Alejandro Ruiz entered the building at that very moment. He was holding a small wooden box. The lawyer nodded to the security guards and walked straight toward us.

“Don Ernesto left this with me three days before his death,” he said. “He instructed me to open it only if Laura were dismissed without an official inspection of the system’s continuity.”

Mauricio laughed roughly.

“My father was ill. He probably could no longer think clearly.”

“A notary certified his signature that same day,” Alejandro replied calmly.

He took a small memory device and three sealed sheets from the box. He placed the device in front of me.

“Laura, are you ready?”

I did not understand what he was asking me. The red lamp was still flashing, and somewhere far away the alarm continued.

“Turn it on,” I said.

Don Ernesto’s voice sounded from the monitor. It had been recorded in his office, against the background of an old clock ticking.

“If you are hearing this, Mauricio has fired Laura. He will think that he has lost one employee. In reality, he has lost the only person who can save my company.”

Mauricio stepped back.

“This is falsified.”

In the recording, his father continued:

“More than ten years ago I gave Laura an independent continuity power of attorney. This does not mean that the company belongs to her. It means that during an accident she makes the final safety decision, even if the director’s order is the opposite. The system’s main algorithm does not fully activate without her double confirmation.”

Sebastián slowly exhaled.

“But I changed all the access permissions.”

!!!  In my eighth month of pregnancy, my husband locked me out of the hospital, but after a single phone call, the smile vanished from his mistress's face.

“That is exactly what the recording says,” Alejandro said. “And that is exactly why the second document exists.”

He unfolded the sheet. On it were orders issued in Sebastián’s name: canceling the safety backup line, disabling the manual-control panel, and activating the test program. Every order had been confirmed with Mauricio’s electronic approval.

Mauricio shook his head.

“I was only approving the reports.”

“It says here that you personally requested the old protection be removed,” I told him.

“Laura, you planned all of this.”

“If I had planned it, why would I sign my dismissal and leave?”

He could not find an answer.

Alejandro turned over the third sheet.

“Don Ernesto’s last instruction is this: Laura must immediately regain emergency-control authority, while the acting director’s decisions must be suspended until an independent investigation is completed.”

Verónica lowered her eyes.

“Mauricio, I will no longer follow these orders.”

“You are my employee!”

“I am no longer sure that this company is safe in your hands.”

A sharp sound came from the system. On the screen, the pressure reading at Station Seventeen had nearly reached the red limit.

I asked for the old panel’s diagram. Alejandro handed me the document. In the lower corner of the diagram I saw the mark Don Ernesto had shown me eighteen years earlier together with the key.

“I am going to Station Seventeen,” I said.

“I am coming with you,” Mauricio said.

“No. You will stay here and wait for the police.”

“You cannot arrest me.”

“Not me. Your signatures have already done that.”

The sirens outside grew louder. Alejandro answered his phone, and a few seconds later his face changed.

“Laura, this is no longer only a system failure. A station employee found a second recording. In it, Mauricio directly says that you had to be fired before the audit began.”

Mauricio looked at the phone.

“What recording?”

Alejandro answered slowly:

“The one you recorded yourself when you thought the camera was turned off. And they have already begun listening to this recording in the police room…”
