They Asked for Help on the Plane and I Stood Up, but When I Entered the Cockpit, the Captain Suddenly Turned Pale

Almost three hundred people were sitting on the plane when the captain’s voice shattered the silence of the night in one second: “If there is a military pilot on board, please report to the crew immediately.”

We were flying from New York to Madrid. Two hours had already passed over the ocean. The lights in the cabin were off, children were sleeping, some passengers were wearing headphones, and I, by the window, in the left seat of the eighth row, was resting my head on the shoulder of my seven-year-old son, Leo.

A small yellow plastic airplane lay on my lap. Leo carried it on every journey and repeated the same thing every time: “Mom, this is our luck.” And I smiled, although there was always something in those words that hurt me.

To the other passengers, I was simply a tired mother. I was wearing a green sweater, my hair was carelessly tied up, and I refused food from the flight attendant because Leo had barely fallen asleep. No one knew that I had once been one of the most experienced combat pilots in the air force.

They did not know either why I had left everything.

The captain’s voice sounded again: “We have a technical problem that requires immediate assistance. If anyone has experience flying military aircraft, please contact the flight attendant.”

A heavy silence descended in the cabin. Someone wrapped a blanket around a child. An old man took his wife’s hand. I opened my eyes and immediately recognized that tone — restrained fear, short pauses, and a voice trying to preserve calm when everything was slipping out of control.

The flight attendant was moving quickly between the rows. When she stopped beside me, the water in the plastic cup she was holding trembled so much that several drops fell onto the floor.

“Ma’am, do you happen to know whether a military pilot is sitting near you?”

I looked at Leo. His fingers were gripping my sweater. Ten years ago I swore to myself that I would never return to the cockpit. That day my copilot, Daniel Cross, died before my eyes. Since then, even the sound of an aircraft engine made my heart stop.

!!!  A lányom összeesett a vacsoránál, anyám pedig csak letette a villáját — aztán apám hirtelen elsápadt

But below there was only the black ocean. And here sat children, families, and people who had no idea what was happening behind the cockpit door.

“I am a pilot,” I said quietly.

The flight attendant did not hear me.

“A former military pilot. I flew combat aircraft.”

Relief and fear appeared on her face at the same time.

“Can you really help?”

“If you still want to land alive, I have to try.”

An elderly woman sitting in the neighboring row looked at Leo. I leaned toward her.

“Please look after him for a few minutes.”

“Go, child. I will not leave him.”

I placed Leo’s plastic airplane in her hand and adjusted the blanket on his shoulders.

“Mom will be back soon,” I whispered.

“Mom, really?” he asked in his sleep.

“Really.”

I unfastened my belt. Its click sounded throughout the cabin. I stood up and followed her toward the cockpit.

When I reached the door, my palms froze. A voice from years earlier returned to me — Daniel’s last transmission, the alarm signal, the fire-colored sky.

The flight attendant entered the code on the door. It opened, and the smell of hot electronics, burned plastic, and cold coffee rushed out of the cockpit.

The captain turned toward me. Then he saw my face and suddenly went pale.

“Maya Lin?”

I was still standing on the threshold when the screen behind him began flashing red. The captain reached toward the control lever and whispered: “You should not have been here…”

I entered the cockpit. The first officer was sitting unconscious in the right seat, an oxygen mask covering his face. Captain Mark Davis was staring down at the instrument panel.

“How long has he been unconscious?” I asked.

“Eleven minutes. He suddenly had trouble breathing.”

“What is the situation?”

“The control system is changing direction by itself. All auxiliary modes shut down at the same time.”

Then the plane shook violently. A cup fell onto the floor and coffee splashed onto the wall. This was not turbulence. The shaking was precise and rhythmic, as if someone outside were striking the plane’s wing.

!!!  Me ordenaron contar munición mientras cuarenta hombres nos rodeaban, pero cuando pedí el rifle, el soldado herido dejó de respirar

“When was your last training?” Mark asked me.

“Eighteen months ago.”

“I do not need rusty memories.”

“Then decide quickly whether you want my help or not.”

Mark clenched his teeth and looked at the screen. A course appeared there that led neither toward Madrid nor toward the nearest airport.

“Who set this direction?”

“No one.”

“Then someone has taken control of the system from outside.”

The captain looked at me. There was no longer only fear in his eyes. I saw guilt there as well.

“Maya, before you got here, we received a message. It contained your name…”

At that moment the radio crackled and an unfamiliar voice sounded in the cockpit: “Maya, if you can hear me, know this — this plane was not chosen by accident…”

The voice from the radio repeated my name once more. I looked at Mark, but he was already standing pale and clutching the microphone with both hands.

“Who are you?” he shouted.

For several seconds, the only answer was electrical static. Then the voice became clearer.

“Maya, Daniel’s death was not an accident.”

The air seemed to disappear from the cockpit.

No one had spoken Daniel’s name in front of me for ten years. I gripped the seat so I would not fall.

“Turn off this channel,” Mark told me.

“No. Record everything.”

Mark looked at me.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“That is exactly why I want to hear it.”

The man on the radio continued: “That day you discovered a defect in your plane’s fuel system. Daniel wanted to write a report. But he did not make it to the report. His aircraft’s control system was shut down remotely.”

My knees lost their strength.

“Who shut it down?” I asked.

“Those who are controlling your passenger plane now.”

Mark turned toward me.

“Maya, listen to me. I was the head of the base technical department then. I received the order to close Daniel’s case.”

“You knew?”

“Not everything. Only that the report had to disappear.”

“And why did you call me now?”

Mark lowered his eyes.

“Because they are attacking us using the same code. You are the only person who knows the logic of that system.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Voltei após dois anos fora e encontrei meu filho no chão, mas a reação do meu marido fez minha mão tremer

The course on the screen was still changing. The plane was slowly turning north.

A voice came from the radio: “Maya, if you regain control, you will receive a file proving the true reason for Daniel’s death. If you refuse, in eight minutes the plane will enter military airspace and they will shoot you down.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

“The person who survived that day.”

Mark held his breath.

“Daniel?”

The radio fell silent.

At that same moment, a new message appeared on the cockpit screen. The file title contained Daniel Cross’s name, and below it — my son’s date of birth.

I moved closer to the screen.

“What does Leo have to do with this?”

In reply, we received only one sentence: “Your son is in the hands of the people controlling the plane…”
