Part 4 — The rich guest struck me in front of everyone, but as soon as the man who entered the hall opened the door, he strangely stopped breathing

Those words sounded from the phone, and Dante’s face immediately hardened.

“Which hospital are you at?” he asked.

The woman told him the address.

“Lock the door. Do not let anyone go to Luka,” Dante said. “We will be there in ten minutes.”

The call ended.

Viktor struck the chair with his hand.

“All this is ridiculous. I do not even know your brother.”

“You do,” I said. “You just thought that I would never find him either.”

“You had disappeared for three years. Who will believe your word?”

Dante walked over to him.

“Everyone will hear the recording.”

“You cannot prove anything against me.”

“I cannot. They can.”

Dante turned his head toward the door. Two police officers were already standing there, and behind them was an investigative team. Fear and relief were written together on Alberto’s face.

Viktor took out his phone and called someone.

“Send a lawyer. Right now. Moretti is here and is setting something up against me.”

No one answered for a long time on the other end of the call. Finally Viktor heard only a few words and slowly lowered the phone.

“He is not coming,” he said quietly.

His lawyer refused to come. After listening to the recording, he told Viktor that he would no longer represent him.

For the first time I saw how a person collapsed not from a blow, but because every door around him closed at once.

A police officer put handcuffs on him.

“Mr. Hargrove, you are under arrest on charges of organizing an attack, threats, and pressuring witnesses.”

Viktor looked toward me.

“Rosa, we can settle this.”

“I waited three years for you to say that.”

“I will give you money.”

“I do not want it anymore.”

“Dante will not be able to protect you all your life.”

Dante looked toward him.

“She no longer needs my protection. She simply will not allow anyone to intimidate her again.”

Viktor was taken away.

!!!  Part 4 — During the New Year’s party, my son was being chained in the basement, but the sound of my calm steps suddenly wiped the smile from my son-in-law’s face

A few minutes later Dante and I were going to the hospital. Rain spread in thin lines across the car window. I took the swallow-shaped clip out of my hair and held it in my hand.

“Why did you leave the second one?” Dante asked me.

“Luka had the second one. When we were children, Grandmother gave one to both of us. Mine was lost, your people found it and put it in my bag on the night when the car overturned. I took only one. I left the second with Luka because I knew that if something happened, it would show us the way.”

“And did he know that you were alive?”

“Only in recent months. I told him everything.”

We found Luka in the hospital corridor with an oxygen mask. His shoulder was broken, there were scratches on his face, but his eyes were open.

“You are late,” he told me.

I smiled and took his hand.

“I had too many things to finish.”

“Do you still have that clip?”

“I do.”

“Then everything will be all right.”

Luka’s testimony and the recording finally changed the case. Viktor’s head of security admitted the next day that he had arranged the accident on his orders. The hotel owner confirmed the deletion of the cameras. Alberto said in court that Viktor had threatened me several times that evening and that he had locked the door only because he was afraid of Dante.

I did not sit beside him in the courtroom. Dante stood in the back row, while Luka was still in the hospital.

When the recording was played, Viktor heard his own voice through someone else’s mouth for the first time.

“The car must go off the bridge.”

Silence fell over the hall.

Viktor raised his head.

“I did not say it like that.”

The prosecutor placed the device on the table.

“The recording was made at your signed meeting.”

!!!  Part 4 — At a Family Dinner, My Husband Put Me to Sleep Again, but When I Opened My Eyes, My Father-in-Law’s Face Turned Strangely Pale

“I was only warning.”

“Whom?”

Viktor opened his mouth and could say nothing more.

That was when I realized that his punishment was not his imprisonment. His punishment was that he could no longer escape his own words.

Several weeks later Luka was walking with a cane. I, however, did not return to work at Dante’s old restaurant. He offered me a position as administrator, but I refused.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because I want to build something of my own.”

Dante nodded.

“Then I will only open the door for you. You go inside.”

In spring I opened a small café by the river. The walls were warm cream-colored, green plants stood by the windows, and in the mornings the smell of freshly baked bread went through the entire street.

Luka sat at the cash register and, despite the doctor’s permission, tried to lift heavy boxes.

“You are doing everything alone again,” I reproached him.

“I learned it from you.”

“And I learned that asking for help is not weakness.”

He smiled at me.

Dante often came in the evening, when the café was emptying. Sometimes he talked. Sometimes he simply sat in front of me and drank coffee. The three years lost between us did not return in one day. But little by little, trust returned.

One evening he placed a small wooden box on the table.

My old letters lay inside.

“They found these in Viktor’s warehouse,” he told me. “He kept everything that could be used against you.”

One letter contained only one sentence: “If I ever survive, I want an ordinary life.”

Dante read it and lowered his eyes.

“Do you have it now?”

I looked at the street through the window. A man was buying bread with his son. Someone was passing by laughing. The city was breathing normally.

“I am still learning,” I said. “But it is already mine.”

Three months later Viktor sent me a letter from prison. Inside it said that he regretted it, that he had understood everything incorrectly, and that he could have made my life better.

!!!  A férjem a saját szállodájának nevezte a Grand Aureliát, majd amikor beléptem, a biztonsági őrök arca elsápadt

I read the letter to the end.

Then I folded it.

Luka asked me:

“Will you write him an answer?”

“No.”

“Nothing at all?”

“Silence is also an answer.”

I put the letter in the trash bin and opened the café door. The first snow was falling outside. The flakes fell on the illuminated sign and immediately disappeared.

I took the copper-colored swallow-shaped clip out of my hair. I placed it in a small frame on the wall, above the table where Dante had first spoken to me that night.

Luka looked at it.

“You do not wear it anymore?”

“No,” I told him. “Now I no longer need a reminder that I am strong.”

Dante was standing at the door.

“And if you ever forget?”

I looked at the frame.

“Then the café will remind me.”

Outside, the snow grew stronger. Inside, the smell of bread, warm light, and quiet voices remained.

For the first time in three years, I was not afraid to close the door.

The swallow remained on the wall.

And I looked ahead.

Missed the beginning?
