My Father Humiliated Me in Uniform, but When the General Walked Toward Me, the Smile Disappeared from His Face

At the eastern gate of the White House, my father pushed me as if, twenty-six years ago, I should have disappeared not only from his life, but from the road as well.

“Uniformed woman, move aside! You are standing in the line of honored guests!” the young man shouted and struck me on the right shoulder.

I did not stumble. Twenty-six years of military service had taught me balance before my body learned it. I only straightened my heels, checked the small silver plate of medals hanging on my chest, and turned toward him.

It was Trevor. My half-brother.

His excessively expensive tuxedo pulled at his shoulders, as if it had been sewn for someone else. Yet the same old arrogance he had in childhood was still written on his face, when he threw my books out of the window in my father’s office.

“You didn’t recognize me?” I asked.

Trevor narrowed his eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to the event.”

“You?” he chuckled. “You are probably a security guard.”

At that moment, a heavy hand closed around my arm from behind. Fingers sank into the fabric of the dark-blue uniform. I felt pain in my bones, but I did not change my expression.

“I told you, step back, useless—” His voice suddenly fell silent.

I raised my head.

Arthur Mercer was looking at me.

It had been twenty-six years since I had met my father so closely. He was still wearing an expensively tailored Italian suit, still checking his gold watch, and still looking as if every person belonged to him. Evelyn stood beside him, covered in pearls, examining my uniform with disgust.

“Katie?” my father barely pronounced.

His hand was still on my arm. I looked down, exactly at his fingers. He immediately let go of me.

“I am at the event, Arthur.”

Evelyn broke into loud, ringing laughter.

“Arthur, don’t worry. It is obvious that she simply works in security here. Look at how serious her face is.”

My father’s gaze moved to the medals.

“Are you still playing this game?” he whispered to me. “Twenty-six years ago you told me that you preferred military service to becoming a director in my company. You refused business school, the inheritance, and my surname.”

“You told me that you no longer considered me your daughter.”

His face hardened.

“And now you are standing before me and making my guests think that people in the Mercer family work in security.”

!!!  Ich fand meinen ehemaligen Schwiegervater verwahrlost im Pflegeheim, doch als mein Exmann an die Tür hämmerte, wurde seine Hand plötzlich ganz still

Trevor chuckled.

“Dad, tell her to leave here.”

My father bent toward me. Beneath the expensive perfume, I could smell the sharp scent of whiskey.

“I paid fifty thousand dollars for this invitation. Today I am signing the most important contract with the Department of Defense. And you will stand quietly, look at no one, and act as if you do not know us.”

“You have no idea why I am here.”

“I know that you disappointed me.”

His finger pointed directly at my medals.

At that moment, a siren sounded at the gate. The metal barriers descended simultaneously. The people became alarmed. One of the guests dropped a champagne glass from his hand, and shattered glass scattered across the marble.

“Code red!” the security officer shouted. “Everyone remain in place!”

My father turned around irritably, but then the heavy oak door of the White House opened.

General Vance came out from there, accompanied by four armed guards. Four stars shone on his shoulders.

My father immediately smiled and moved toward him.

“General! Arthur Mercer, Mercer Defense Technologies! Did you come personally to meet me?”

The general walked past his outstretched hand.

His gaze stopped directly on me. Then he turned to the officer standing beside him.

“Did you keep General Mercer waiting long?”

My father’s smile froze. The general took a step toward me and began raising his right hand……

General Vance raised his hand higher. My father leaned forward, certain that he was going to salute him.

But the general stopped in front of me.

“General Mercer, I apologize for being late,” he said.

Everything around us fell silent. Only the ringing of the nearby metal detector could be heard.

I straightened my shoulders in military fashion and returned the salute.

“The report later, General Vance. I am still having a family conversation here.”

The color drained from Trevor’s face.

“General?” he rasped.

Evelyn gripped her pearl necklace.

And my father stared at me, frozen.

“This is impossible,” he said. “She was an ordinary officer.”

“No, Arthur,” I answered calmly. “You simply have not been interested for twenty-six years in what I became.”

General Vance looked at the medals hanging on my chest, then turned to my father.

“Your daughter is leading the president’s advisers’ closed meeting today. She is the one who will decide whether your company receives the new military contract.”

!!!  Mi antiguo amor vio al niño que me obligó a criar sola, pero al escuchar mi respuesta su prometida dejó de sonreír

My father took one step back. The chain of his watch lightly jingled against his suit.

“Katie, come on, let us explain all this.”

“Until now, you did not ask me for an explanation.”

At that moment, my assistant’s phone rang. She quickly handed me a small black folder.

“General, this document was just brought to us. It says that new evidence concerning the contract has been discovered.”

My father’s company seal was visible on the folder.

I opened the lock, but before I saw the first page, General Vance quietly said to me:

“Katie, this is no longer only a corruption case. Someone knew you would be here today…”

I took out the photograph hidden inside the folder and immediately realized that the danger to my father was much greater than to me…

There was a photograph taken inside the folder. It showed a closed meeting of my father’s company, while the date was written on the wall—the previous evening.

But I was not in the photograph.

My father, Trevor, and his financial director were standing there. Copies of the military contract lay on the table. My name was clearly visible on one of the papers.

“How did this get to you?” Evelyn asked, her voice trembling.

General Vance looked at the security officers.

“That is exactly what we came to find out.”

I unfolded the second sheet. It said that Mercer’s company planned to submit false technical data during the state procurement process and bribe several officials. The recipient of the money was listed as a person who was supposed to use my military identity.

My father immediately shook his head.

“This is forged. Katie, you can see for yourself that someone is acting against you.”

“Against me?” I asked. “Then why is your signature here?”

He looked at the paper. His lips grew slightly pale.

“This is not my signature.”

“Correct,” Vance said. “This is a copy. The real signature is on another document that we already have in the investigation.”

Trevor looked at his father.

“Dad, you said everything was settled.”

“Be quiet!”

“You told me that, using the general’s influence, you would also use the case against Katie.”

My father raised his hand as if he wanted to hit him, but security immediately moved in. The whispering of the people grew louder.

At that moment I understood why Vance had called me General Mercer and why he had not told him only my surname. My rank had not been a secret for years, but to my father I was still the eighteen-year-old girl who had left his office with a letter from the military academy.

!!!  I Found My Five-Year-Old Child Wet and Frightened in the Yard, but Lorena’s Face Suddenly Changed

“Katie,” Vance said, “today you are not only reviewing the contract. You are the main witness in the case that we have already transferred to the military prosecutor’s office.”

My father turned toward me.

For the first time I saw not contempt, but fear in his eyes.

“If you do this, you will destroy your own family.”

“You destroyed the family when you told me that I was no longer your daughter.”

At that moment, a message arrived on my phone from an unknown number. The photograph had just been taken, and it was accompanied by only one sentence:

“If you testify against your father, the person for whom you served for twenty-six years will not wake up tomorrow.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

General Vance saw my face.

“Katie, who is that person?”

Before I could answer, another message arrived. This time it was a photograph—of my son, Noah Mercer, taken in the schoolyard……
