I was standing in the hospital corridor, holding an enormous bag prepared for the newborn, when I heard my husband’s voice behind the closed door.
That morning I spent hours choosing gifts. I bought the baby a soft cream-colored blanket, tiny clothes, an expensive wooden toy, and a small silver spoon whose handle was to have the baby’s initials engraved on it. The spoon lay in a red velvet box and quietly tapped with every movement of the bag.
My sister, Rebecca, had given birth to a son. The whole family was celebrating this news. And I, as always, stood beside everyone.
Before I approached the door, I thought I would find happy noise inside. But first I heard Vance’s voice.
“Don’t worry about Daniel,” he was saying calmly. “He will continue paying the expenses. He is sure that the baby is his.”
My step stopped.
The sharp smell of hospital disinfectant hung in the corridor. I gripped the bag’s handle so tightly that my fingers turned white.
Rebecca laughed quietly.
“Valerie?”
My heart began beating as if someone inside the door were pounding with fists.
“Valerie will do everything we ask,” Vance answered. “She still thinks I am on her side. When she sells her shares, we will have enough money to settle everything and leave.”
For several seconds, silence fell.
Then Vance added:
“Our child carries my surname.”
The silver spoon in the bag lightly rattled again. That sound destroyed everything for me at that moment.
My husband was cheating on me with my sister. The baby whom everyone was celebrating as Daniel’s child was actually Vance’s.
I did not enter the room. I did not shout. Not a single tear fell. I simply put the bag on the wooden bench in the corridor and turned back.
I got into the car and stared at the steering wheel for several minutes. My hands were trembling, but one word kept circling in my mind: shares.
It was not only betrayal.
Vance was talking about my money as if it already belonged to him.
Before reaching home, I logged into our bank account. We should have had approximately one hundred and sixty thousand dollars. On the balance I found only five thousand four hundred dollars.
I opened the transactions one by one.
One transfer took my breath away. More than one hundred and forty thousand dollars had been transferred to a newly established company called “Horizon Vitali.” Rebecca’s name appeared in the company documents.
That same evening my mother texted me: “Rebecca has another ten thousand dollars to pay tomorrow. Will you pay?”
I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I wrote back: “Okay.”
They had no idea what I was doing.
The next morning I requested a credit report. I discovered three cards in my name that I had never opened. Then I saw a seventy-five-thousand-dollar business loan for which I was supposedly the guarantor. The signature looked like mine, but I knew I had never signed it.
I saved every page. I took screenshots. I wrote the dates and amounts in a notebook.
That evening Vance returned home with an ordinary expression. He put down his bag, kissed my forehead, and asked:
“How are you?”
“Fine,” I answered.
He did not notice that at that moment I looked at him as a stranger for the first time.
A little later at dinner, he started himself:
“Things are getting complicated. I need another investment.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know exactly. We will probably have to sell part of your shares.”
I placed the spoon beside my plate and asked calmly:
“For our future?”
“Exactly,” he smiled.
But I already knew that his “our future” was being planned with Rebecca.
“I’ll think about it,” I said.
Vance nodded in satisfaction.
He did not know that I would sell nothing anymore. I was only waiting to see how many more words he would say.
Three days later my mother invited the whole family to lunch. My father’s house seemed unusually quiet. The rice bowl was still on the table when my father, Arthur, took out a folder.
“Valerie, there is one matter we need to settle,” he said.
The documents for my apartment were in the folder.
“Why do you have these?”
My mother immediately answered:
“Rebecca needs a large house for the baby.”
“And therefore?”
“You must give the apartment to her.”
Vance looked away from me.
I stood up.
“You have already decided, haven’t you?”
No one answered me. Just then Daniel appeared outside the door, holding a crumpled folder.
“Valerie, wait for me,” he said. “I found something. You need to see this…”
Daniel held the folder so tightly that the papers folded at the edges.
“Tell me right here what you found,” I said.
Outside my father’s house, we stood beside his car. It was a cold evening, and the metal lantern hanging in the yard creaked with every swing. For the first time I noticed that Daniel had dark circles under his eyes.
“Yesterday I was checking the hospital bills,” he said. “Several expenses were on my account, but I had not paid them.”
“What expenses?”
“Expensive medical services, housing rent, car payments. Everything was connected to Rebecca’s name. Then I came across your name.”
“Mine?”
He took three sheets from the folder.
“These documents show that you supposedly agreed for the expenses of the baby and the mother to be funded from our joint account. But the signature is made incorrectly.”
I looked at the sheet. The signature looked so much like mine that for several seconds I even doubted myself. Then I noticed a small golden seal in the right corner. My former lawyer had such a seal, the lawyer Vance had been meeting frequently in recent months.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” I asked.
Daniel hid his gaze.
“Because I thought you knew. Or… I simply did not want to destroy one more thing for you.”
“Daniel, everything has already been destroyed.”
“No,” he raised his head. “There is still something that may save us.”
When I returned home, Vance was waiting for me in the living room. The television was on, but no one was listening to it. There were two glasses on the table. One was full, and in the other only a transparent piece of ice remained.
“Where were you?” he asked me.
“I met Daniel.”
His fingers touched the rim of the glass and immediately pulled back.
“What did you talk about?”
“The hospital bills.”
A very small but noticeable change appeared on his face.
“Daniel was always jealous. Now he is probably nervous because of the baby.”
“There was no talk about the baby’s paternity,” I said.
Vance exhaled with relief. It was then that I realized this matter was what he feared most.
“Tomorrow we have to go to the bank,” he said. “The documents for selling your shares are already ready.”
“So quickly?”
“I am taking care of things.”
“I have not agreed yet.”
His smile disappeared.
“Valerie, don’t make it difficult. Your family needs help.”
“Which family? Mine, or Rebecca’s and yours?”
The sound of the clock was heard in the room. Vance froze.
“What do you mean?”
I came one step closer.
“I mean that ‘Horizon Vitali’ is in Rebecca’s name and you are transferring our money there. I mean that someone is taking loans in my name. I mean that you are already promising my apartment to someone else.”
His face changed in one second, but then he put on the mask of a surprised husband again.
“Are you crazy? Who talked to you?”
“The numbers.”
“All of this was for the business.”
“Then why was it hidden?”
Vance could not find an answer. His phone vibrated in his pocket. Rebecca’s name appeared on the screen. He looked at the call and did not answer.
That night I did not sleep in the bedroom anymore. Sitting on the cold kitchen floor, I checked the old files again. In one document I found the company’s registration date. It had been created exactly in the week when Vance told me he was going to a conference for several days.
The next day Daniel brought a lawyer. His name was Mirian. He placed a small voice recorder on the kitchen table.
“Before you sign anything, listen to this,” he told me.
“What is this?”
Mirian looked at Daniel.
“A recording made in a café next to the hospital. Daniel accidentally saw Vance and Rebecca. The conversation was not accidental.”
First the sound of a cup being put down came from the recorder. Then Rebecca’s whisper.
“What if Valerie refuses to sell?”
Vance’s voice sounded clearly.
“She won’t. First I’ll be a gentle husband to her, then the family will pressure her. If she still resists, the loans will work against her.”
The recording stopped.
I could not breathe.
“Is this enough?” I asked Mirian.
“It is a sufficient beginning,” he told me. “But the main document still exists.”
“Which one?”
Mirian pointed to the lower section of the folder. A small brown envelope lay there, with red wax hardened along its edges.
“I received this from the court this morning. Only you have the right to open it.”
My name was written on the envelope. Below it was one sentence: “Evidence requiring urgent review.”
Mirian handed me scissors.
At that moment the phone rang. The call was from the hospital.
“Mrs. Valerie,” an unfamiliar woman said, “the result of the baby’s genetic examination is ready. But please do not come alone. We have discovered another serious discrepancy here…”
We arrived at the hospital’s small consultation room at noon. White blinds moved by the window, and each time the light fell in stripes on the wall. In the middle of the table lay the red-wax-sealed envelope.
Rebecca was already waiting for us there. Vance sat beside her, his hands placed on his knees. Daniel stood by the window. The doctor sitting at the desk had such a serious expression that I knew the answer even before opening the envelope.
“Why is she here?” Vance pointed at me.
“Because her name was used in the documents connected with the baby,” the doctor answered.
Rebecca bit her lips.
“Valerie, this is a family matter. Don’t make a scene.”
“You staged the scene,” I said. “I am only pulling back the curtain.”
Mirian placed the envelope in front of me.
“You open it.”
I broke the wax with my fingernail. The sound of tearing paper rang unusually loudly through the room. I took out two sheets.
The first was the genetic conclusion.
The doctor took a deep breath.
“According to the result, Daniel is not the biological father of the baby.”
Daniel lowered his eyes but did not move.
“I already knew that,” he said in a hoarse voice. “I felt something.”
Rebecca’s face became wax-colored.
Vance jumped up.
“This is a mistake!”
“No,” the doctor took the second sheet. “The second sample confirms that the baby’s biological father is Vance.”
Rebecca covered her face with her hands. Daniel closed his eyes. And I felt such calm, as if I had been in water all night and had finally come to the surface.
Vance turned toward me.
“Valerie, listen to me. Everything is not as it seems.”
“Then say how it is.”
“This baby… was an accident.”
Rebecca raised her head.
“An accident? You told me that you wanted a new life with me!”
“Now be quiet!”
“No, you be quiet!” I answered. “You told both of them that I would give you money. You told Daniel that he was the father. And you made Mother and Father decide to take my apartment from me.”
Vance’s lips moved.
“I was going to return the money.”
Mirian placed another document on the table.
“Your signature on this loan application was forged. The examination confirmed this. Also, the bank transfers of ‘Horizon Vitali’ went directly to Vance’s personal account.”
Vance looked at the sheet.
“That is impossible.”
“You thought it was impossible only while Valerie did not notice,” Daniel said.
I looked at Vance.
“How long had you been planning this?”
He could not answer me.
Rebecca burst into tears.
“You told me that we would live together after the divorce.”
“He was only using your money,” I told Rebecca.
She looked at me and for the first time saw that nothing remained in me of that obedient sister.
Mirian handed me one more sheet.
“Here is the court’s temporary order. Vance, Rebecca, and their company are forbidden to dispose of your property. Also, all your accounts are protected until the investigation is completed.”
Vance took a step forward.
“You did this?”
“No,” I said. “You did it when you thought I would not find out.”
At that moment my phone rang. An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen. I answered.
“Mrs. Valerie,” a man told me in an official voice, “I am a representative of the investigative service. We have received new information in your case. The matter concerns not only forged loans and transfers of money.”
“What else is there?”
Several seconds of silence fell on the other side of the line.
“We received a video recording from the night when your signature was first used. The recording shows that Vance was not alone in the room.”
Vance quickly raised his head.
“Who was he with?” I asked.
The man answered me in a low voice:
“That is exactly the part I ask you to listen to in person. Because in the recording, a member of your family says that if you resisted, an accident should be arranged for you…”
