Part 4 — Seven Years Later We Found a Video of My Missing Husband, but Paul Lost Color When He Heard One of Lily’s Phrases

Under the photo there was only one sentence: “If you want to meet them alive, let Paul leave this house.”

The phone fell from my hand.

Lily picked it up from the floor.

“Mom, are these Jack and Caleb?”

I looked at the photo once more.

The boy standing on the left had a small scar behind his ear. Jack got it at the age of six, when he fell off a bicycle. The boy standing on the right had an old rope-like mark visible on his neck. Caleb had had a wound exactly there in childhood, when the boat’s rope accidentally tightened.

My children were alive.

I had spent seven years without them. For seven years I woke up every day with the belief that the lake had taken them from me.

Paul struck the door again.

“Anna, open! I know that you have the recording.”

Lily said quietly:

“We should call the police.”

“I already called,” said an unknown voice from the other side of the door.

It was Police Chief Morris. Two investigators were standing with him. Later I learned that they had been watching my house all night because they already had the message sent in the morning from Paul’s phone.

I opened the door.

Paul rushed in on the very first step.

“This recording means nothing,” he shouted. “Ryan was panicking. The lake took the children.”

“Then why does he mention your name?” I asked.

“Because he hated me? Because your husband was crazy?”

Chief Morris put his hand on his wrist.

“Paul Whitmore, you are under arrest for kidnapping, fraud, and attempting to destroy evidence of the crime that occurred seven years ago.”

For the first time Paul said nothing.

His eyes darted toward the computer.

Then the investigator turned on the second phone. The conversation he had on the shore in the morning had been recorded there.

!!!  Ich kehrte heim, nachdem meine Mutter mich am Telefon warnte, und als ich die Küche betrat, erstarrte mein Bruder

“I cannot bear one more day,” Paul’s own voice was heard saying.

Paul shook his head.

“I did not say that.”

“You did,” the investigator answered. “And you said many other things.”

Paul grabbed the chair. His knees gave way.

For the first time I heard his words from the outside. For seven years he had come to my house, pretended to worry about my children, and lit live candles at the lake. Now his own voice was betraying him.

“Where are the children?” I asked.

Paul pressed his lips together.

“You will never find them.”

“I have already found them.”

Morris took the phone from me and looked at the photo.

“We are determining the location of the picture. Ryan’s mention of Miranda in the second file was not a lie. Your sister worked secretly in a protection program before her death. She saved the boys and raised them under other names.”

I leaned against the wall.

Miranda. My sister, whom I thought I understood completely. She had remained silent for those five years because protecting the children required it.

That same evening we arrived at a small house on the other side of the town. An old woman opened the door for us. Two young men stood behind her.

The boy standing on the left looked at my face for a long time.

“Mom?” he said.

That one word was enough.

Jack ran toward me. Caleb lagged several steps behind, as if he was afraid that the dream would suddenly end. I hugged both of them and felt the firmness of their shoulders. They were no longer children, but they were my sons.

“I’m sorry,” I repeated. “I’m sorry that we could not find you for so long.”

Caleb laid his head on my shoulder.

“We were waiting for you.”

“Did you know that I was alive?”

“Dad told us that a mother never stops searching.”

!!!  Me obligaron a arrodillarme por un robo que no cometí, pero al ver a mi hija entrar al patio, mi esposo dejó de sonreír

Paul went to prison. The court confirmed his crime, but I did not smile at a single hearing. His punishment could not give me back seven years. It could not erase Lily’s childhood, which she spent with the question: why did Dad leave and why did he not return?

The truth about Ryan also gradually became clear. He knew that Paul would need time to follow the trail of the money. Therefore he asked Miranda to save the boys. He himself diverted Paul’s attention toward the boat and disappeared so that his family would remain alive.

Ryan was killed that night by Paul’s accomplices. His body was found north of the lake, in an abandoned warehouse.

This story turned out to be the hardest.

The boys were alive, but their father would not return to us.

Several weeks later we put the house in order again. I put Ryan’s books back on the shelf in his room. Under the bed I found Jack’s old toy boat. And Lily no longer let go of her childhood phone. It was switched off now, but for us it remained proof that sometimes the truth needs years before it finds its voice.

Three months later Jack opened a small fishing workshop. Caleb enrolled at the university and decided to become a psychologist. Lily came to me every week and put the kettle on the kitchen table in the same place where Ryan had been sitting in the video.

One evening she asked me:

“Mom, are you still afraid that everything was a dream?”

The first snow was falling outside the window.

“Sometimes,” I told her.

“Then touch my hand.”

I touched her hand.

Lily’s fingers were warm.

“Now do you know that I am here?”

“Now I know.”

Months later Paul sent me a letter. The lawyer told me that he wanted to repent and that perhaps someday I would be able to hear him.

!!!  Ich sagte der neuen Lehrerin, warum ich nie heiratete – doch als sie den Brief ihrer Mutter las, verlor sie jede Farbe

I read the letter.

Then I folded it and sent it back.

I wrote only one sentence: “Your remorse is no longer a part of my life.”

That night I put the copper compass on the shelf. The words scratched on the back were still visible: “The way home.”

For years I thought that this way had been lost in the lake.

But the way had never disappeared.

It was simply waiting to reach us.

The compass needle stopped quietly.

The house was full of voices again.

Missed the beginning?
