Nora’s Family Humiliated Me at Dinner, but When Her Father Asked Me One Question, His Smile Began to Disappear

When I entered the dining room of Nora’s parents, her father immediately jumped up and called the guard, as if not a stranger but a threat had entered the house.

“Take this man out of here,” Whit Alderman said. “Right now.”

Nora froze beside me. I had walked for two hours in freezing rain because several accidents had occurred on the road. A small brown stain was visible on the collar of my old wool coat—my seven-year-old daughter, Emma, had spilled hot chocolate on me that morning. I had not had time to change into good clothes.

Whit did not even ask my name or offer me his hand.

“Dad, this is Miles,” Nora said sternly. “My fiancé.”

“I don’t care who he is.”

His wife, Celia, slowly raised her wineglass and examined my worn shoes.

“Nora, darling, we were expecting a different kind of man.”

“What kind?” I asked.

Whit snickered.

“Someone who suits my daughter’s position. Not a tired single father who can barely afford to come to the city in a rental car.”

His words chilled me more than the rain. Five years ago, I lost my wife. Since then, I had prepared Emma’s breakfast in the morning, checked her homework in the evening, and worked at night. I was tired, but I was not poor.

“My wife died,” I said calmly. “I look tired because I am raising a child alone and also running my own business.”

Celia fell silent for a moment. Whit only straightened up more.

“Nora does not need to take on other people’s problems.”

I took Nora’s wrist. I felt her trembling.

“Let him finish,” I whispered.

Whit took this as submission. That was the first time he was wrong.

He informed us that Graham Lyle would also come to dinner. Nora’s former fiancé. The son of a wealthy family, a member of influential councils, and, as Whit said, “a person suitable for Nora’s world.”

The doorbell rang.

Graham entered holding expensive wine and with a smile as if everyone in this house had already taken a liking to him. He shook my hand too hard.

“So, this is Miles.”

“What do you do?” he asked me.

“I do consulting work.”

“For whom?”

“Mainly, for companies that are going through a difficult period.”

Whit laughed.

“So, unemployment with a business card.”

Everyone laughed except Nora.

I remained silent. They did not understand that I had spent sixteen years saving insolvent companies. Three weeks ago, my investment firm had acquired several large debts from the portfolio of a bankrupt bank. Among them was a debt of Nora’s company, Aldenbridge.

Nora did not know this. Neither did Whit.

Graham placed his leather bag beside the chair. A corner of a confidential debt spreadsheet could be seen from it. His name was written on the very first page.

At dinner, he explained finance to me, as if I were a child.

“Debt buyers are parasites,” he said. “They wait for good companies to make a mistake, and then take everything away.”

“Sometimes,” I replied, “the borrower hides the truth.”

Nora lightly touched my foot. She knew that tone. I spoke that way only when a person was building his own trap.

At last, Whit revealed the hidden reason.

“Graham’s family firm will refinance Aldenbridge’s debt,” he said.

Nora’s fork stopped on the plate.

“When did you decide?”

“After I began correcting the losses caused by your wrong decisions.”

Graham leaned forward.

“The help will come under one condition. I will return as chief executive officer.”

“No,” Nora said immediately.

Whit struck the table with his hand.

“You have no choice!”

Celia shook her head.

“Emotions in business always come at a high price.”

I put down my napkin.

“The banks have already called,” I said quietly.

Graham’s face changed.

“How do you know?”

I did not answer. I only looked toward the bag. Graham quickly reached for it, but Nora was faster and picked up the bag from the table. The zipper opened. I reached toward the folder hidden inside, but at that very moment Whit shouted…

Whit struck the table so hard that the candle flame trembled.

“No one touches my things in my house anymore!”

“Then don’t bring company secrets here,” I said.

Graham approached Nora.

“Give me the bag.”

“Why are you afraid?” Nora asked him.

Her fingers opened the folder. On the very first page, the debt number and Aldenbridge’s seal were visible. Then she saw the name of my firm.

Her breath caught.

“Miles… what does this mean?”

Whit snatched the papers from me.

“This is impossible.”

“What is impossible?” Nora turned around.

Graham lowered his voice.

“This debt is already in Lyle’s firm’s hands. If they demand payment, the company will lose control.”

Silence fell over the room. The clock mechanism could be heard clearly.

Whit looked at me.

“Who are you?”

My patience had been waiting for this question all evening.

I took out my phone. A message from a lawyer glowed on the screen: “The signature is ready. We only need your confirmation.”

Nora saw it.

“Answer him,” she told me.

Graham turned pale.

“Don’t you dare.”

I pressed the call button. On the other end, my partner’s voice was heard.

“Miles, the final document is ready. Shall we confirm?”

Everyone was looking at me. I was one word away from answering, but at that very moment Nora’s phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. She answered, and within a few seconds her face changed.

“Who are you?” she asked.

The man on the other end said only this: “If you want to find out why the debt file disappeared from the bank, come to the old clinic in the morning…”

Nora slowly lowered the phone. No one in the room remembered the wine, or dinner, or that only a few minutes earlier they had been laughing at my shoes.

“Who was it?” I asked.

“A former bank auditor. He says I must meet him at the old clinic in the morning.”

Whit darkened his face.

“It’s a trap.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But the biggest trap this evening was standing right here.”

Nora turned toward me.

“Tell me the truth, Miles.”

There was not anger in her voice, but pain. That was harder for me.

I brought the phone to my ear.

“Confirm it,” I told my partner.

A momentary silence fell on the other end.

“Are you sure? Aldenbridge is your personal connection.”

“Now it is my family. Confirm it.”

Whit collapsed into a chair.

“What are you confirming?”

I took an official document from the bag and placed it on the table. It bore my firm’s seal, the full debt number, and the date of the transfer of control.

“Three weeks ago, we acquired a portfolio of unpaid bank loans,” I said. “Aldenbridge’s debt was in that portfolio. Now this debt belongs to my company.”

Celia’s glass slipped from her hand. The sound of crystal scattered across the floor.

Graham stepped back.

“You are a liar.”

“Then call your lawyer.”

Graham took out his phone. He immediately made the call.

“Is this Miles Hart’s company?” he asked. “No, impossible… You do not know whom you are speaking to.”

His face grew paler every second.

Nora stared down at the document.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I did not want your trust because of my money.”

“And still you came here, knowing that my family would treat me this way?”

!!!  Part 4 — My mother-in-law searched my bag like a thief, my husband hit me twice, and then the smile disappeared from her face

“The only thing I knew was that I wanted to come to you. I did not know the rest.”

Whit took the document, and his hands trembled.

“You can destroy my company.”

“I can. But I will not, if you tell the truth and return control to Nora.”

Graham snickered, but the laughter caught in his throat.

“You did all this because of Nora? Do you think you are a hero now?”

“No. I simply am not going to save a woman from the man who is trying to trade in her name.”

At that moment Nora’s phone rang again. It was the same number.

“Answer it,” I said.

She answered.

“I am the auditor,” the man said. “The document is only half the truth. Aldenbridge’s debt did not enter this portfolio by accident. Someone deliberately supplied the bank with falsified accounts. And if by ten tomorrow morning you do not have the evidence I will show you, your company will face not only debt but also criminal charges.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“Who falsified the accounts?”

The man was silent for a long time before answering.

“I will have to tell you that face to face. And I advise you not to come alone. Especially do not trust the person who sat at this table today…”
