My Son Was Beaten at His Grandfather’s House, but When the Recording Was Played, the Smile Disappeared from His Wife’s Face

That night, in the hospital corridor, a policeman told me that my eight-year-old son had been found alone in the street, and for the first time I realized that this had not been an accident.

Kaio’s face was swollen. Blood had dried near his left ear, his lip was split, and a small white bandage was stuck to his forehead. The doctors were waiting for the results of the scan and choosing their words carefully.

“We suspect more than a concussion,” Doctor Marina told me at five in the evening. “We cannot yet tell you whether there is internal bleeding.”

“Will he survive?”

The doctor squeezed my shoulder.

“The most important thing now is that he does not fall asleep.”

Kaio lay on the bed and clung to my fingers with his right hand. I noticed a red mark on his wrist. It looked as if they had tied him with a rope. At that moment I felt a small object in my pocket—a blue plastic figure in a football uniform, which Kaio had hung on my bag that morning.

“Dad, this will protect you,” he had told me then with a laugh.

Now the figure was bloody.

“Kaio, who hurt you?” I whispered.

The boy opened his eyes slightly. His gaze escaped toward the ceiling, as if the answer he was afraid to say was hiding there.

“Grandfather…”

“Do not talk yet.”

“Dad, I tried to run away.”

My breath caught.

“Run away from where?”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“From the garage. Uncle Levan held my hands. Uncle Vinicius held my legs. And Grandfather… was hitting me on the floor.”

The corridor clock showed five twelve. At the same time, my wife, Priscila, was not answering her phone for the eighth time.

“What did Grandfather tell you?” I asked.

Kaio closed his eyes.

“He said you would not come. He said you were nobody to him.”

The doctor opened the door and I stopped talking. But those words remained in my head like a nail.

Priscila’s father, Arnaldo, had insulted me for years. He called me a useless man, someone from a foreign family, a person ashamed of his own past. In my youth I worked in private security abroad, although ten years ago I left everything. Now only Kaio’s school, football, and the house payments existed in my life.

But Arnaldo remembered one thing well: if anyone touched my son, I could no longer control myself.

At six in the evening I called my old friend Mauro. He worked in the preservation of digital evidence.

“Mauro, three adult men attacked my son.”

“Are you at the police station?”

“At the hospital. But I know they will start deleting the recordings now.”

“Do not touch anything. Send me the address.”

“I want the truth, not revenge.”

“Then do not waste ten minutes.”

Priscila appeared at seven fifteen in the evening. She was too neat for a woman who said she had been running around in panic all day. Her hair was perfectly brushed, and there was not even garage dust on her shoes.

“Father said Kaio simply fell,” she told me.

“Three men saw an eight-year-old child fall?”

Priscila looked at the policeman.

“Rafael, do not turn this into a war.”

“Your family started the war when they struck my son.”

“I do not know what Father did.”

“But you know he did something.”

She could not answer me.

Mauro came forty minutes later. He carried a black bag with a small copper lock shining on it. He placed a computer on the table and quietly told me:

“I found two cameras in front of the house. One is a neighbor’s doorbell device, and the other belongs to a service vehicle stopped on the road.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi hermano me presentó como el fracaso familiar en su boda, pero al verme, el padre de la novia dejó de sonreír

Priscila’s face changed.

“We cannot watch it now,” she said.

“Precisely now we must watch it,” I answered.

Mauro opened the file. The garage door appeared on the screen. Kaio was backing away. Levan was holding his arms, Vinicius his legs. Arnaldo was slowly approaching.

Mauro put his hand on the mouse, while Priscila lowered her head.

In the video Arnaldo’s mouth opened and his voice was heard. Then Mauro’s finger stopped on the screen, as if he had reached something even more terrible. He took a sealed folder from the bag and reached toward the first sheet…

Mauro’s hand stopped toward the folder, but first he played the video to the end. Only the machine’s intermittent signal could be heard in the room.

On the screen Arnaldo was bending over Kaio.

“Your father will not come,” he was saying. “You are nothing to him.”

“Please, Grandfather, enough…”

“Do not make a sound.”

Then that laugh was heard. Short, dry, and so cold that the skin on my neck prickled. Kaio’s body struck the floor. Priscila covered her mouth with her hand.

“Turn it off,” she said.

“No,” I answered. “We must listen to it to the end.”

In the video Levan asked Arnaldo:

“Is it enough now?”

“Not yet,” Arnaldo answered. “If his father comes, everyone will see his character.”

I rose from the chair.

“What does that mean?”

Mauro put a hand on me.

“Do not touch them yet. That is exactly what they were waiting for.”

The video ended. In the frozen frame, Kaio’s small shoe could be seen. His other foot was bare. It was the shoe the neighbor had found in the street.

Mauro opened the folder with the copper lock.

“Arnaldo was not merely trying to frighten the child. During the last three weeks he had been meeting with lawyers.”

He laid statements and emails on the table.

“What was he talking about?” I asked.

“Your mother.”

My mother, Helena Bitencourt Siqueira, died before Kaio’s birth. Her family owned logistics companies, commercial buildings, and shares in several enterprises. I almost never spoke about any of this at home. My mother had left the property under independent management and left shares to her son and future descendants.

“For Kaio?” I asked.

“In the future. Not now, not as free cash. But his share exists.”

Priscila slowly sat down.

“Rafael, this cannot be the reason.”

Mauro looked toward her.

“It may be the reason. Three weeks ago Arnaldo learned this information. Two days later he sent a letter to your family lawyer and requested that he be allowed to intervene in Kaio’s guardianship.”

“I knew nothing,” Priscila said.

“Then look at this.”

Mauro placed the third sheet in front of her. It was a photograph of Arnaldo and Priscila meeting, taken at the entrance of a legal office.

“This is from three weeks ago,” I said.

Priscila lowered her eyes.

“Father told me that we had to clarify the inheritance matter.”

“And why did you not tell me?”

“Because you always get angry when I talk about my family.”

“They beat a child in the garage. And now you are choosing your words?”

Mauro took several printed messages from a small folder.

“These were recovered from Arnaldo’s phone. The police have already taken the device, but the copies are protected.”

The first message began like this: “Priscila must take control of the child and legally remove Rafael.”

Before my eyes the room seemed to tilt.

“When did you learn about this?” I asked my wife.

“Two months ago.”

“For two months you knew that your father was planning a case against me?”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich folgte meiner weinenden Frau bis zu einer verborgenen Wohnung, doch als sie die Tür öffnete, erstarrte ihr Gesicht

“I did not think it would concern Kaio.”

“But you knew he was planning something.”

Priscila began to cry.

“He said you were hiding money from me. That you had another life. That we would never reach Kaio’s share while you were alive.”

Mauro opened another message. His face hardened.

“There is mention of another person here.”

On the screen it said: “If he does not get angry because of the child, let us use the sister’s plan.”

“Which sister?” I asked.

Priscila immediately fell silent.

“Rafael…”

“Tell me.”

“Your sister, Beatriz.”

I had not seen Beatriz for five years. She left the family after a dispute connected with the management of our mother’s property began. All I knew was that she lived in one of the small towns and was angry with me.

“What does Beatriz have to do with this?”

Priscila hid her face in her hands.

Mauro opened the last message. It said that Beatriz was ready to tell the police that I had abused people in the past as well and now posed a danger to my child.

“But why?” I asked.

Mauro answered me:

“Because they were promising her something too.”

At that moment the hospital security guard opened the door and held out an envelope to me.

“This was left for you. A woman brought it and said you must receive it personally.”

Only one word was written on the envelope: “Tomorrow.”

I looked at the sealed edge. Priscila stepped back, while Mauro quietly told me that it would be better to open it in front of a camera. Just then a call came to my phone from an unknown number, and when I answered, Beatriz’s voice sounded on the other side:

“Rafael, if you want Kaio to survive, come alone tomorrow morning…”

“Rafael, if you want Kaio to survive, come alone tomorrow morning…”

Beatriz’s voice was silent for several seconds.

“Where?” I asked.

“To the house where everything began.”

“No one will touch my son again.”

“Then listen to the end. Arnaldo is using Kaio’s signature and your guardianship rights. If you go to the police now, they will say that you are putting psychological pressure on the child.”

“You are helping them?”

“I have already helped them. Now I am trying to fix what I can.”

The call ended.

Mauro immediately called the hospital policeman. In the morning, at ten o’clock, an investigative team gathered at our home. I wanted to go alone, but the investigator told me:

“You will not go anywhere alone. Besides, we already have enough to prove the truth.”

We opened the envelope in a small hospital conference room. Inside were three sheets and a small memory card. Mauro opened the file.

Arnaldo’s voice was heard from the very first second.

“If Rafael gets angry, we will have the case ready. If he does not get angry, we will frighten the child so that he demands to stay with us.”

Then I heard Priscila’s voice.

“This will be very hard for Kaio.”

“It is hard only if you have a conscience,” Arnaldo answered. “You are the mother; you must choose who the child belongs to.”

I looked at Priscila.

“That is your voice.”

She lowered her head.

“I know.”

On the recording Priscila said that she had already prepared a statement claiming that I often threatened Kaio. Only one thing frightened her: if Kaio did not say that he did not want to be with his father, the plan would fail.

Then Arnaldo’s voice was heard.

“That is why he must believe that his father will not come.”

Silence fell over the room.

The investigator took the second sheet. It was a temporary guardianship request prepared by a lawyer, dated two days before Kaio was beaten. In the document I was described as an aggressive and unstable person. Beatriz was named as a witness.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann setzte seine Geliebte in unser Schlafzimmer, während ich im Garagenbett gegen den Krebs kämpfte – dann verstummte sein Lachen

“I did not write this,” Beatriz said, standing by the door.

Everyone turned toward her.

She was pale and held a folded paper in her hand.

“Arnaldo forced me to sign. He told me that if I refused, he would take my share of my mother’s property.”

“Why did you not come earlier?” I asked.

“I was afraid.”

“And my son was no longer afraid?”

Beatriz’s eyes filled with tears.

“Every day I was afraid that it would be too late.”

At that moment Arnaldo burst into the room with two lawyers.

“All of this is illegal,” he shouted. “I will not allow the police to interfere in my family matter.”

“Does beating a child’s head against the floor belong to your family matter?” the investigator asked.

Arnaldo’s face froze.

“The child fell.”

Mauro played the video. Arnaldo himself appeared on the screen, bent over Kaio’s head.

“You are nobody,” he was saying in the recording.

Arnaldo stepped back.

For the first time Priscila looked at her father.

“You told me you would only frighten him.”

“Be quiet.”

“You told me Rafael would go crazy.”

“I said be quiet!”

His lawyer raised a hand.

“My client cannot speak at this stage.”

The investigator laid the documents on the table.

“Arnaldo Siqueira, you are under arrest on suspicion of seriously injuring a child and premeditated coercion. Levan and Vinicius will also be sought.”

Kaio’s voice could be heard quietly on the recording:

“Dad will still come.”

That simple sentence turned out to be the hardest of all.

Arnaldo’s hands were tied. Priscila sat down on a chair and covered her face. Beatriz cried against the wall.

I thought the main thing was over. But that same evening the child protection service called me.

“Rafael, we are checking a strange visit connected with Kaio at the hospital.”

“What visit?”

“Someone tried to enter the child’s room in a doctor’s name. A security employee stopped her.”

“Who was it?”

The woman was silent for several seconds.

“Priscila’s sister. But she said she was bringing something important for Kaio.”

I looked at Beatriz, who was still standing in the room.

“What thing?”

On the other side the woman quietly told me:

“A copy of Kaio’s birth certificate and another document that your wife has already executed…”
