Part 4 — At midnight my sister asked me to darken my house and hide from my husband, and then a strange man’s hand erased her smile

Mara turned on the phone’s speaker.

From the other side came Noe’s small voice, trembling like a shiver.

“Mom, why aren’t you talking?”

My heart jumped into my throat.

“Noe, darling, I’m here. Where are you?”

The child smiled, although his voice was still frightened.

“In the car. You are sitting beside me, but you aren’t saying anything.”

Caleb, bound in handcuffs, raised his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Mara asked quickly:

“Noe, what do you see through the window?”

“A big red letter. And there is an old water tower.”

Mara looked at the agent who was in the room.

“To the south of the city there is only one abandoned warehouse with such a tower.”

“Go,” I told them. “Right now.”

Caleb rushed forward, but two agents pushed him back.

“I must go with my son!”

“You are going nowhere from this house,” Mara told him.

“Mara, please.”

“For twelve years I have been asking you to tell the truth.”

There was no anger left in her voice. Only exhaustion.

Caleb heard his own words from the recording that Mara played on the phone for the first time.

“The child is safe. He’s at my father’s house.”

His own voice sounded in the attic.

Caleb froze.

Then a second recording followed.

“Eliza won’t understand anything. We’ll take her only when the money has been transferred.”

This was already the strange man’s voice.

Caleb closed his eyes.

“I didn’t say that.”

“But listen,” I told him.

Caleb’s voice sounded again in the recording.

“If necessary, we’ll use Noe. Because of the child, Eliza will sign anything.”

Silence fell over the room.

I looked at him and understood that all these years it had not only been my husband, but also the father of my child, who had been called the wrong person.

“Did you know that Noe was a weapon for them?”

“No. I only agreed to transfer the money.”

“You opened the door through which they came in.”

Caleb sat down. His shoulders collapsed.

Mara took the key record from the kitchen table.

“Daniel Voss, that is, Caleb Morrison, has worked for years in a network transporting people through false families. Money has been found in your accounts. Travel plans are on your computer. And the passports are only the final confirming evidence.”

The strange man became angry.

“You promised us that the woman would sign.”

Caleb answered quietly:

“I was no longer going to.”

“But you still brought her home.”

These words affected him more strongly than the handcuffs.

At that time the agents called from the warehouse. They had found Noe. He had been hiding in the back of an old truck and was holding his little plastic dinosaur.

I hugged him at the hospital.

“I was afraid that you weren’t real anymore either,” he told me.

“I am real,” I answered. “And no one will take us away anymore.”

In the following hours the phone did not stop ringing. Caleb’s lawyer told me that his defense was impossible.

“He confirmed everything,” the woman said. “And you must testify against him.”

“Will I save him?”

“No, Mrs. Morrison. Now you will save only the truth.”

Caleb tried several times to speak with me.

“Eliza, I made a foolish mistake.”

“It wasn’t a mistake. It was a life chosen for years.”

“I loved you.”

“Maybe. But love that hides the truth cannot protect a home.”

Several weeks before the trial, investigators sealed his home office. There I found our wedding photograph, taken down from the wall and lying on the floor. In the photograph we were laughing. That day I had truly been happy.

I picked up the photograph, blew the dust off it, and did not return it to Noe’s room.

Caleb’s empty study was heavier than the news of his arrest. Only one thing remained on the shelves: Noe’s red wax crayon, with which he had drawn a little house on the attic box.

!!!  Nine Years Later, My Ex-Wife Summoned Me by Letter, but When the Door of Her House Opened, I Froze on the Spot

I took the crayon in my hand.

Its tip was broken off.

Three months later Noe and I moved to Richmond. I rented a small apartment on the second floor of a brick house. In the mornings I worked in the court archives, and in the evenings I prepared Noe for kindergarten.

Every night I locked the door twice.

Then I checked it a third time as well.

Noe began drawing again. This time there were no cars in his drawings. He drew a house, two windows, and a door that had no lock on the outside.

“Who lives here?” I asked once.

“We do,” he answered. “Whoever wants to come in has to knock.”

The first snow came at the end of December. I heated hot milk in the kitchen, while Noe stood at the window and counted the flakes.

That evening I received a letter from Caleb.

“I have changed. Meet me just once. Let’s explain everything to Noe.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Then Mara called me.

“Are you waiting for an answer?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I went to the window. Snow was silently covering the stairs in the yard.

“Noe’s peace is more precious now than his repentance.”

I folded the letter and put it in the drawer where old keys were no longer kept.

The next morning Noe called me.

“Mom, look, I finished the house.”

In his drawing there was a small red door. Above the door my name was written.

I sat beside him and put the red wax crayon on the table.

“It’s beautiful,” I told him.

“Now no one can frighten us here?”

“No one.”

I did not bring the attic box to the new apartment. But I brought the crayon with which Noe once drew his first real home in a house full of lies.

That night I locked the door, closed the window, and for the first time in a long while left the light on everywhere.

!!!  Fui a una galería para que el novio de mi hermana me enseñara a disparar, pero al escuchar mi nombre dejó de sonreír

I no longer needed darkness.
