At midnight my sister asked me to darken my house and hide from my husband, and then a strange man’s hand erased her smile

My sister’s voice broke off at midnight as if someone had squeezed her throat, while at that same moment a strange man below my house said: “Then he knows.”

It was twelve minutes past midnight. Rain struck the windows, while the baby monitor beside the bed glowed green. Our four-year-old son, Noe, was with Caleb’s parents that weekend, so for the first time in several months I was sleeping peacefully.

When I picked up the phone and saw Mara on the screen, I immediately sat up. My sister worked for the Federal Investigative Service and at such a time called only when someone had died or death was already on its way.

“Eliza, turn everything off,” she whispered to me. “The phone too, and the lights. Go up to the attic, lock the door, and don’t tell Caleb anything.”

“Mara, what’s happening?”

“Do it now. Don’t ask me.”

There was such fear in her voice that I went barefoot from the bed. Caleb was lying beside me, with his back toward me. His breathing seemed even.

“I’m going to get some water,” I said when his shoulder moved.

He did not answer.

I turned off the hallway light, then the kitchen light and the small lamp in the living room, which Caleb always left on. My hands were trembling. The white cable of the phone charger caught on the door handle in loops and I almost fell.

“Are you on the line?” Mara asked me.

“Yes.”

“Don’t go near the window. Lock the attic door from the inside.”

I climbed the wooden stairs. Every step creaked. The attic smelled of dust, fiberglass, and old Christmas-tree ornaments. I slid the lock on the door and leaned against it with my back.

“I’ve locked it,” I whispered.

“Now don’t move.”

The line went dead.

Nothing happened for one minute. Then I heard Caleb’s voice below. He was no longer sleepy.

“The lights are off,” he said calmly.

Another man answered:

“Then he knows.”

I covered my mouth with my hand. I crawled to a narrow gap in the attic floor and looked down. Caleb stood in the hallway, in gray pajama pants, with my computer under his arm. Beside him stood an unknown man dressed in a black raincoat.

The stranger handed him a small leather bag. Caleb opened it. Inside were three passports.

One had my husband’s photograph. The second—Noe’s. The third—mine.

But none of them had our real names written in them.

My knees gave way. At that moment Caleb raised his head and looked toward the attic, as if he could even feel my breathing through the floor.

“We won’t need to check upstairs,” said the stranger.

“Why?” Caleb asked.

The stranger took a folded folder from the bag and placed it on the table.

“Because tonight everything changes.”

Caleb moved toward the stairs. I stepped back and pressed my hand against an old wooden box. On the box was a little house drawn by Noe with a red wax crayon, and in its corner he had written my name.

The attic-door lock moved slightly.

“Eliza,” Caleb said below. “I know you’re in there.”

A message from Mara suddenly lit up on my phone: “Don’t open until you hear the third knock.”

The first knock sounded on the door.

The second.

Caleb’s hand reached toward the lock, and I moved toward the folder and touched its edge with my fingers…

There was no third knock. A phone began ringing from below the stairs, and Caleb stopped.

“Who is this?” the stranger asked.

“I don’t know,” Caleb answered, but for the first time I noticed fear in his voice.

My phone lit up. Mara was calling me.

“Don’t answer,” I barely heard her whisper. “Take the folder and stand in the right corner.”

I bent down silently. Only one sheet was visible in the folder, and on it was a photograph of our family. Noe’s face had been crossed out in the photograph.

Below, the stranger said:

“If the child is already with them, we’ll have to leave in the morning.”

“The child is safe,” Caleb replied quickly. “He’s at my father’s house.”

Then I understood that taking Noe to his grandparents had not been accidental.

“Eliza, listen to me,” Mara told me. “Your husband is not who you thought he was. But don’t confront him yet. You are not alone in the house.”

The door handle slowly went down. I pressed the folder to my chest and hid behind the old box. Caleb’s calm voice sounded from outside:

“Darling, open the door. I’ll explain everything.”

Then the man standing behind him chuckled.

“Tell her that you’ll soon explain it to her son too…”

At that very moment Mara’s voice could no longer be heard on the phone. I heard only heavy breathing and, from far away, the sound of a car braking.

A thin strip of light appeared from under the attic door. Someone had broken the lock. I opened the sheet and read the very first line. It contained a name my husband had never mentioned…

It said: “Daniel Voss, born under the name Alexei Volkov.”

The sheet fell from my hand. Caleb’s real name was written not in Russian, but in a Georgian investigative record, and beside it I saw stamps from several countries and my sister’s signature.

The door lock completely gave way. The door opened and Caleb came in. Behind him stood the man who was holding a small black bag.

“Eliza, believe me,” Caleb said.

“Should I call you Daniel?”

His face changed immediately. It was as if the temperature in the room had dropped.

“Mara was with you,” he said.

“Mara isn’t here. But her paper is here.”

The strange man stepped forward.

“Give me the folder.”

“One more step and I’ll throw it out the window.”

The small attic window opened only halfway, but the roof of the house was below. Even so, they stepped back.

Caleb raised his hands.

“I didn’t want you to get involved. Nor did I want Noe put in danger.”

“Then why did you take his false passport?”

“Because the past is following me.”

“Who are you?”

He lowered his eyes.

“Twelve years ago I worked in transporting people. At first I thought I was helping people who had escaped. Then I found out that they were selling children. I tried to get out, but they found my family. My real family.”

“And because of that you created my family under a false name?”

“When I met you, I was no longer Daniel Voss. I was Caleb Morrison. I wanted to have a normal life at least once.”

“A normal life does not begin with false passports for a wife and a son.”

The stranger opened the bag and reached toward a gun. At that same moment sharp light burst in through the attic window. Several cars stopped in the yard.

“Federal service! Put the weapon down!”

Caleb looked at the man.

“You told me nobody knew.”

“I was lied to as well,” the stranger answered.

Heavy footsteps sounded on the stairs. Mara came up first; she had a small cut of blood on her face, but held a gun firmly in her hand.

“Eliza, get down on the floor!”

I lay down. Within a few seconds everything was covered by noise: commands, the clacking of metal handcuffs, and Caleb’s shouting.

“Noe isn’t with them!” I shouted. “They changed the address!”

Caleb froze.

“What are you saying?”

Mara took a second sheet from the folder.

“Your parents’ house is empty. The child was taken from there forty minutes ago.”

Caleb’s face became gray.

“Who took him?”

Mara looked at the sheet and raised in her hand the phone that I had thought was switched off all night.

“The person who controlled all your movements. But now there is only one problem…”

Its screen lit up. The incoming-call number was linked to Noe’s little bracelet.

Mara answered and listened for several seconds.

Then all color completely left her face.

“Eliza, your son says that you are sitting in the car…”
