At My Wedding, They Started Mocking My Sick Wife, but When I Opened the Folder, My Son’s Smile Disappeared

At my son’s wedding, one hundred and forty-six guests were laughing until my wife’s face, weakened by chemotherapy, appeared on the screen and my son fell silent.

That evening, it was eight o’clock at the wine estate in the Oregon valley. Crystal ceiling lights glittered, white roses stood on the tables, and the guests held champagne glasses in their hands. Elena sat beside me and straightened the sleeve of her light-blue dress with her fingers. She had chosen the dress for three weeks because after the treatment her body changed every day.

Sophie took the microphone.

“Now we will show you the bride’s family documentary,” she said with a smile. “Some of the footage is especially funny.”

In the first minutes, everything seemed harmless. Ethan appeared on the screen as a child, wearing a pirate hat on his head. The guests laughed. Then he appeared at a school event, with braces on his teeth, and Elena chuckled quietly.

I squeezed her hand.

“See?” I whispered. “He is still that little boy.”

Elena did not answer me. She was watching the screen.

Then the footage changed.

I immediately recognized our kitchen. Elena, after chemotherapy, was standing in a yellow apron. Her hands were trembling violently. She opened the refrigerator twice, stared inside for a long time, and then quietly asked me where we kept the glasses.

My breath caught.

Ethan had filmed this video months earlier, when he stayed with us after the treatment. That night Elena became frightened by her own confusion and cried in the bedroom. She asked me not to tell anyone about it.

Ethan’s voice sounded from the screen:

“Mom, the glasses are above the coffee machine.”

Elena laughed weakly.

“Apparently, my brain quit its job.”

At first, only two guests laughed. Then Sophie’s recorded voice sounded:

“This is exactly where Ethan learned patience with married women.”

This time the entire hall burst out laughing.

Elena froze. Her left hand clutched my wrist, but her fingers were no longer moving. I looked at Ethan. He was sitting several steps away from us and watching the screen. Horror showed on his face.

For one moment I thought, He will stand up now.

But Sophie put a hand on his shoulder. Ethan first looked at her parents, then at the guests, and finally at his mother. Elena was looking straight at him. She said nothing. Neither reproach nor a request. She was simply waiting for her son to stand on her side at least once.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

At that moment I realized that families do not always fall apart in one big quarrel. Sometimes they crack for ten seconds, when a loved one is waiting for help and you choose silence.

I stood up.

The chair screeched sharply across the wooden floor. Several guests fell silent. I walked toward the technician’s table, where a small remote control lay on a black velvet cover.

“Turn it off,” I told the technician.

He looked first at Sophie, then at me.

“The bride told me to let it run to the end.”

“You used this footage without Elena’s consent. Turn it off.”

Sophie quickly came toward me.

“Daniel, it is just a joke.”

“Your joke is about my wife.”

“These are difficult years for everyone. You cannot get so angry about everything.”

Elena spoke for the first time. Her voice was calm, but everyone in the hall heard her.

“I am not laughing, Sophie.”

Sophie’s smile trembled for a moment. Then the music played again and the first shot of a new video appeared on the screen—Elena was coming out of the cancer center, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, while I was holding her by the elbow so she would not fall.

I leaned toward the technician and reached for the remote, but just then Ethan jumped up and came within one step of me.

“Dad, wait, I will explain to you…”

Behind him Sophie was raising the microphone again, while from the corner of the hall her father took some folder and came toward us…

At the sight of the folder, Sophie’s face changed. Ethan noticed it.

“What do you have there?” he asked her.

“Nothing that we should discuss this evening,” Richard replied.

I pressed the remote. The screen went black and the laughter disappeared all at once. The silence became heavy.

Sophie came over to me.

“I did not want to humiliate Elena.”

“Then why did you choose only the recordings where she could no longer recognize herself?” Elena asked.

Sophie looked at Ethan.

“He gave me access to all the family videos.”

“For the childhood footage,” Ethan said. “I did not give these for the wedding.”

“You yourself told me that she was part of our family.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“But that did not mean you would use my mother like this.”

Elena gripped my arm.

“Let’s go.”

Ethan caught up with us in the corridor.

“Dad, please, wait.”

“You should have stopped after the very first video.”

“I froze.”

“Why did you look at Sophie first and not at your mother?”

He could not find an answer.

Elena turned around.

“Did you think protecting me would ruin the wedding?”

He closed his eyes.

After we returned home, we did not speak for a long time in the car. Elena took off her earrings and put them in the small compartment for holding glasses. I knew what her silence meant: several weeks earlier, we had prepared a document to sign that would transfer a controlling share in our most valuable commercial building to Ethan.

!!!  On my daughter’s wedding day, my daughter chose to stay home, and a month later she looked at Rick and her smile disappeared

That night I did not sign it.

The next day Ethan called me eleven times. At last he told me that Sophie had been asking us for months to transfer the building. Then Richard called me and said that his daughter had a large debt and had put the video together herself.

But he had not yet said the worst…

The next day, around noon, I met Richard at a small café near the lake. Raindrops fell on the windowpanes, and on the table his restless fingers tapped a coffee spoon.

“Daniel, I must apologize to you first,” he said.

“You did not film those videos.”

“But they were made in my house. I found the project history in Sophie’s laptop. She did not have a professional editor. She assembled everything herself.”

He put his phone on the table and showed me a recording. The dates of the files were clearly visible. Elena’s footage had been added three weeks before the wedding. Two days after Ethan told Sophie that the transfer of the building would happen only if Elena felt at peace in their marriage.

Something broke inside my heart.

“So she did it deliberately?”

Richard lowered his head.

“She thought that because of your sick mother you would postpone the decision. She wanted to put pressure on Ethan. She said that if she did not receive the building, she would have to prove in front of everyone whose side he was on.”

That evening I went to our house. Ethan was standing in the living room. In his hand he held Elena’s small wooden jewelry box, which he had seen there since childhood.

“Dad, now I know everything,” he said.

“Did you know that Sophie was expecting money?”

“I knew that she often mentioned the building. But I thought she was simply talking about plans for the future.”

“My father owes six hundred thousand dollars,” Richard said from the doorway. “He borrowed it for the business. And you told her that you would receive a share of our building.”

Ethan lost color.

“I did not know about the debt.”

“But you knew that you were asking us to sign.”

“I thought it was your gift.”

Elena slowly rose from the armchair. In her hand was the small thing she had been turning over all evening—a hair clip made from a dark red ribbon, which Ethan had worn in kindergarten and which Elena had kept to this day.

“Son, a gift is love,” she said. “Transferring ownership, however, is trust. You lost trust that night when you kept silent during my humiliation.”

Ethan began to cry.

!!!  I saw my own husband and my friend together at my country house, but Vanessa's smile vanished the moment she heard me arrive.

“Mom, I was afraid.”

“I am afraid every day too,” Elena replied. “But because of fear, I do not sell the person standing beside you.”

No one moved in the room. Then Ethan’s phone rang. Sophie’s name appeared on the screen. He answered the call and turned on the speaker.

“Where are you?” Sophie’s voice sounded. “Did Richard ruin everything for you?”

“Sophie, did you deliberately add these videos?”

“Do not start drama. If you back out now, I will tell everyone that your family really does not care about our future.”

“You used my mother.”

“I only showed how difficult it is to live with you.”

Ethan ended the call. For the first time he saw his wife the way we saw her.

Richard took out a second sheet of paper.

“This is a list of her business debts. And one more thing: tomorrow morning the creditor will contact the owner of the building, because Sophie has already told him that she will soon receive your share.”

I looked at Elena. The document was still in my pocket.

That night we decided that instead of signing, we would go to a lawyer. But in the morning, before we could leave for the office, the telephone rang. An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

“Mr. Mercer,” an unfamiliar woman said, “a claim has already been filed against your son’s wife, and you should know that she is relying not only on your building. She has another document issued in the name of your family…”
