My Mother Did Not Invite Me to Her Birthday with My Child, but Her Face Lost Color When She Read My Reply

I received my mother’s message when three-month-old Maisie was sleeping peacefully in the back seat and I had already been driving toward Portland for four hours.

“Do not come to my birthday. We need to get away from your child for a while.”

There was no apology, no explanation, not a single soft word afterward. The sentence remaining on the screen looked like cold metal.

I pulled the car over to the side of the road. Beyond the window, trucks rumbled past, and the wind shook the empty winter tree. I heard Maisie’s quiet babbling from the back seat. She pursed her lips into a small letter and fell asleep again.

If she had written not “your child” but simply “your baby,” it probably still would have hurt me. But Mother wrote “we need to get away from your child,” as if my girl were noise that had entered the family.

The phone trembled in my hand.

Should I call Mother? Cry? Ask what we had done wrong?

For the first time then, I did none of them. I only wrote: “I understand. I wish you a happy birthday.”

Then I turned the car around.

I still had four hours of road ahead of me. Maisie was breathing in the back seat, while I gripped the steering wheel so tightly that the marks of my nails remained on my fingers. I remembered everything I had done for them. Three thousand dollars for Kylie when her supposedly great business venture ended before it even began. Brynn’s wedding flowers and photographer. Five thousand dollars for my parents’ roof.

I was the one who always fixed things.

The good daughter.

The reliable person.

But as soon as I gave birth to my own child and was left alone, something changed in their eyes. Her father, Derek, said several weeks before the birth that fatherhood was not for him and disappeared. And Mother once told me directly:

“You chose this situation yourself, Jenna.”

When I returned home that evening, Vanessa called me. I was standing in the kitchen, cold coffee untouched on the table, while Maisie moved her fingers in the basket.

“Why does your voice sound like that?” Vanessa asked me.

“Mother told me not to come to her birthday.”

“Only you? Or Maisie too?”

I barely swallowed the crying stuck in my throat.

“Both of us. She said we need to get away from the child.”

Silence fell for several seconds.

“Jenna, they are not accepting your child less; they are punishing you because you are a single mother.”

“I know,” I said, although admitting it cut even deeper into my heart.

For the first time, I spent my mother’s birthday without them. I sent neither a gift nor a card, and I did not call. All day I was with Maisie in the park. We were watching leaves fall from the bare branches when Mother finally called me. The call rang only twice and stopped.

The next day Vanessa called me.

“Do not be afraid, but Lauren has arranged something for you.”

“If she is asking me for money, I have nothing left.”

“On the contrary. She invited us to Montana for Thanksgiving, to a private house. She is paying for the flight too. And children are welcome.”

At these last words I looked at Maisie. Just then a new message from my mother appeared on the phone: “I hope you finally understand now that I cannot drag you everywhere.”

Maisie stretched her little hand into the air. For the first time in a long while, I felt such peace, as if someone had lifted a heavy stone from my chest.

During Thanksgiving week we went to Montana. At the wooden house standing by the snow-covered lake, Lauren opened the door for us herself.

“May I hold Maisie?” she asked, and without waiting for an answer, she smiled at the child.

No one complained about her crying. No one told me to take her into another room for a while. Chef Rosa set my food aside separately because she saw that I was feeding the child during dinner.

On Thanksgiving we sat at a long wooden table. When my turn came, Maisie was pressed against my chest.

“I am grateful for the people who become family when your own family turns its back on you.”

Vanessa squeezed my hand. Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

In the morning I photographed the lake’s pink reflection and wrote only one word: “Grateful.”

Two days later, my phone exploded with calls and messages.

Mother: “Why didn’t you tell us you were going to Montana?”

Brynn: “Some people have money for luxury, but not for family.”

Kylie: “Are you becoming better than us now?”

Finally Mother wrote to me: “A house like that costs thousands per night. If you have that much money, help us with the property tax.”

Maisie was lying on the floor and playing with a toy elephant. I was reading my mother’s new message and slowly moved my fingers to the keyboard. This time the answer should not be only angry. I knew exactly that one sentence would hurt them much more than a thousand explanations…

…I wrote: “You did not ask where I was. You are only interested in what I can pay for.”

The reply came in one minute.

“How dare you?” Mother called me. “We are your family!”

“Were you family when you did not want my child to come too?”

“You turn everything into drama.”

“No. I am simply no longer softening what you said, for the first time.”

Father took the phone from her.

“Come tomorrow. We will talk in person.”

!!!  Después de cuatro hijas, mi marido sostuvo por fin a su hijo, pero al verle la cara dejó de sonreír y retrocedió

“I will take the child too.”

Silence fell.

“No, Jenna,” Mother said. “The conversation will be between adults.”

I smiled, although my eyes were burning.

“Then there will be no conversation.”

I ended the call.

I told Vanessa everything. She stared at me for a long time, then took a small silver recorder from her bag.

“Lauren’s lawyer told me to save all the messages. And the bank statements too.”

“Why?”

Vanessa did not answer. She only reread my mother’s last message.

“Because there is more than money hidden here.”

That night I opened my old bank accounts. Five thousand dollars for the roof. Three thousand for Kylie. The money for Brynn’s wedding. The transfers appeared one after another.

Then I found one unfamiliar payment. In my name. Without my consent.

The purpose said: “Property tax.”

And the amount had been deducted twice.

In the morning I agreed to meet Mother. I knew that not only reproaches awaited me there. They were hiding something from me, and for the first time I held the evidence in my hands.

When I opened the door of their house, Kylie was standing behind Mother. A folder was in his hand.

“Sit down, Jenna,” he said.

He put the folder on the table and opened the clasp…

…when he took the very first sheet from the folder, I immediately recognized my signature. Only one thing was strange: I had never signed this document.

A heavy smell stood in the room, as if dampness had remained trapped in the walls after the rain. Vanessa was holding Maisie, while I stood at the kitchen table. Mother stood by the window and worried the edge of the curtain with her fingers.

“What is this?” I asked.

Kylie looked away.

“We received a notice from the bank. There is a loan in your name.”

“I did not take out a loan.”

“That is exactly why we called you here,” Father said.

Vanessa placed the phone on the table.

“The lawyer has already checked. The signature used on the loan application is forged. And the money went to Kylie’s account.”

Mother turned around quickly.

“This is a family matter. Kylie intended to repay it.”

“Three years ago?” I asked. “Are you talking about the money I gave for his business?”

Kylie tightened his jaw.

“The business failed.”

“But you took on new debt in my name.”

This time no one said a word.

Vanessa spread out the second sheet. It was my bank statement, showing that I had already paid the property tax six months earlier. From the five thousand dollars I had transferred to my parents for the roof, part of the money had gone toward the tax. And the rest had once again ended up in Kylie’s account.

“You told me the tax was still due,” I said.

Mother’s face turned pale.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann strich mich am Flughafen aus dem Familienurlaub, doch als ich zur Schalterhalle zurückkam, verschwand sein selbstsicheres Lächeln

“You owe us your help.”

“No. You used my trust.”

Vanessa switched on the recorder. My mother’s voice filled the room, recorded two days earlier, when she had called Brynn.

“If Jenna is left alone and we do not invite her to the birthday, she will feel guilty again. In the end she will offer us money herself. And the child gets in our way.”

Maisie stirred in her arms. Her little fingers clung to Vanessa’s sweater.

Mother struck the chair with her hand.

“That was a private conversation!”

“And that conversation showed exactly what you thought of me,” I said.

Father sat down. For the first time I saw his shoulders relax.

“Jenna, we are simply going through a difficult period.”

“You may be going through a difficult period. You had no right to take money in my name.”

Kylie stood up.

“Are you going to the police against your own brother?”

“I am not going against you,” I answered. “You went there yourselves.”

That same evening, the lawyer sent all the documents to the bank and the police. I thought I already knew the most painful truth, but when I returned home, I found a call from an unknown number.

“Mrs. Jenna,” a man said, “we found another document in your case. It is directly connected to your birth father.”

The words “birth father” froze in the air. For years Mother had insisted that my real father was the man who had raised me since childhood.

“What document is it?” I asked.

The man was silent for several seconds.

“A document that shows your family planned all of this much earlier than you think…”
