Twenty Minutes After My Son’s Funeral, I Saw My Husband with His Lover, but When He Looked at Me Through the Camera, His Face Suddenly Changed

That night, when my five-year-old son was fighting to breathe on a hospital bed, my husband did not answer even my seventeenth call.

At eleven forty-seven at night, in the emergency department of the hospital, Doctor Matthews stopped pressing on his chest. The monotonous hum of the ventilation could be heard from the ceiling above. The monitor fell silent. The curtain ran across the glass door, as if a curtain could hide my son’s little body.

I had my hands stretched out in front of me. Eleven years of working as an emergency nurse had taught me how to save a body. But that night another nurse gently approached me and pulled me away from the bed.

“Meredith, please step back a little.”

“Try again,” I told him. “Please, one more time.”

The doctor lowered his eyes.

“We did everything.”

I noticed Lucas’s sock. It was blue, with yellow rockets, and had slipped halfway down from the heel. I had held exactly that heel in my palm when he was a baby.

“Straighten his sock,” I whispered. “He’ll get cold.”

The doctor’s lip trembled. He straightened the sock.

My phone lay beside the opened cookies. Seventeen calls were visible on the screen. Seventeen opportunities for Garrett to answer. Seventeen seconds during which he could have said: “I’m coming, Meredith.”

I did not call my mother again. I called my father.

William answered on the first call.

“Dad… Lucas is gone.”

On the other side, a chair scraped against the floor. Keys fell onto the table. My father inhaled only once.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital.”

“Don’t leave. I’m coming.”

He did not ask whether I was sure. He did not say that everything would be all right. Probably because both of us knew: nothing would be all right anymore.

Garrett appeared at two seventeen in the morning. His shirt was wrinkled beneath his expensive coat. He had a light pink stain at his wrist, and sweet, unfamiliar perfume followed behind him in the cold air.

“My phone died,” he said.

I looked at his fingers. He was still wearing his wedding ring.

“I called you seventeen times.”

“I know. When I connected it to the charger, I saw all the calls.”

“And still you didn’t come.”

Garrett ran two fingers over Lucas’s hair, then covered his face.

My father rose from the chair. He had worked as an investigator for thirty years and knew how a convenient lie sounded. This time he only took my coat from the hanger.

“Let’s go outside, child.”

I did not move away from Lucas’s hand until his fingers became cold.

The funeral took place on a gray Tuesday. Rain gathered on the church steps. Among the white roses, the coffin looked so small that its bearers could not meet its gaze.

I put Lucas’s worn toy elephant, Captain, into the coffin, but took it back before closing the lid. The little copper bell tied to his ear rang once.

Garrett gave a beautiful speech. He spoke about dinosaurs, fairy tales, and what a great honor it had been to be Lucas’s father.

I was looking at the wet legs of his trousers and remembering hundreds of evenings when Lucas stood by the stairs and waited for his father.

After the funeral Garrett kissed my forehead.

“I have to finish something at work.”

“Today?”

“It’s a complicated case.”

He went around the flowers as if the coffin there held the body of a stranger’s child instead of my son.

Twenty minutes later I followed his car. He stopped in front of the Peyton Hotel. I parked badly; one wheel climbed onto the curb.

Behind the glass, a blonde woman stood up. When she approached Garrett, she smiled. The woman put her hand on his chest and kissed him.

I immediately recognized the thin gold chain hanging around her neck. It was the anniversary gift from our marriage, which Garrett had told me he had left for repairs.

I raised my phone.

The woman turned toward the glass.

Garrett followed her gaze and looked directly into my camera. Then he slowly reached his hand toward the inside pocket of his coat…

Garrett did not come toward me. First he whispered something to the blonde, then picked up a small black folder from the table.

I entered the hotel. My hands were trembling, but my voice was calm.

“That is my necklace.”

The woman clutched her neck.

“Garrett gave it to me.”

“He told me it was being repaired.”

Garrett clenched his teeth.

“Now is not the time for this.”

“I buried my son today. When will it be time for you?”

The woman raised her head.

“He told me that you lived separately.”

“He lies to me, as he lies to everyone,” I told her.

My father was waiting for me outside. When he saw the folder, his face changed.

“Where did you find this?”

“He brought it out himself.”

William did not touch the papers.

“We’re going to the police.”

At that very moment Garrett took out his phone.

“If you do this, Meredith, you will lose everything. The house, the accounts, even Lucas’s insurance.”

“I have already lost Lucas.”

For the first time, his gaze became confused.

When we returned home, my father opened my laptop. He said that I must not contact Garrett for six days, until we spoke to one person.

At two in the morning, an unknown number called me.

“Mrs. Haley, I’m calling from the clinic archive. We found one record about your son that should not exist.”

“What record?”

The woman exhaled quietly.

“That day Lucas had a different medicine prescribed. But someone changed his chart…”

I entered the small room of the clinic archive at six in the morning. There was dust on the windowsill, and the old printer smelled of burned paper. Nino, the archive employee, locked the door.

“I found this record yesterday,” she told me. “There are two corrections in your son’s electronic chart.”

“Who changed it?”

Nino looked at the screen.

“With the password of the administrator of Garrett Haley’s company’s medical program.”

My father tapped his fingers on the table.

“What connection did the company have with the child’s treatment?”

Nino opened a white folder.

“Garrett had a private foundation that financed medicines for rare diseases. But several medicines were fake. The genuine drug prescribed for your son was replaced with an experimental mixture.”

I felt coldness in my throat.

“Did he give this medicine to Lucas?”

“According to the record, he brought the last dose home himself.”

My father put a second folder on the table.

“I have been working on this for six days. Garrett took millions from the company accounts, then bought fake medicines. After Lucas’s death, he was going to put all the blame on you.”

“On me?”

“He has already submitted a statement to the insurance company claiming that you could not complete the child’s treatment and that you had severe depression.”

I grabbed the chair.

“Why?”

This time the lawyer Nora answered. She stood at the door and held a small memory device in her hand.

“Because he needed Lucas’s insurance and your share in the company’s foundation. But that is not all.”

Nora turned on the device.

Garrett’s voice sounded in the room.

“Meredith must not come in that night. If the child does not survive, I will say that she changed the medicine herself. The calls mean nothing; I’ll leave the phone dead.”

My knees gave way.

A woman’s voice sounded in the recording. It was the blonde woman from the hotel.

“Will you at least leave me the necklace?”

Garrett chuckled.

“She won’t need it anymore. Soon she’ll have neither a house nor a name.”

Silence descended in the room.

“Where was this recorded?” I asked.

“In the hotel room,” Nora said. “Your father found the recorder there while you were talking to Garrett.”

For the first time my father looked directly at me.

“But now he knows that we have the recording.”

At that very moment my phone lit up. The message was from Garrett: “If you want to know who Lucas’s last doctor really was, come alone to the old warehouse.”

Nora took the phone from me and studied the screen for a long time.

“Meredith, this is a trap.”

I looked at Garrett’s address. Then I noticed one hidden symbol at the end of the message, which was used only in the company’s internal system.

“No,” I said quietly. “Garrett did not send this message.”

My father stood up.

“Then who is calling us to the warehouse?”

The phone lit up again, and this time only one sentence appeared: “Tell your father that there was a second camera in Lucas’s room too…”
