Part 4 — When my wife went home with her ex-husband, I changed the locks — the fear that appeared on her face froze me

…At that same moment I called the director. It was seven in the evening, and in the office corridors only the quiet sound of the cleaning machine could be heard.

“We received a video,” he told me. “Your name and Judith’s face are visible. Do you want to explain anything to us?”

“I want everything to be officially recorded. I will delete nothing and hide nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

David sent me the complete recording, the original file’s data, and all of Ryan’s messages that same night. The next morning we went to the police. Judith sat beside me, and in her hand she still held the same black bag with which she had gone to the lakeside house.

Investigator Mari wrote down every detail.

“Did you know you were being recorded?” she asked Judith.

“No.”

“But you went there voluntarily.”

Judith lowered her head.

“Yes.”

I looked toward her. It was the first time she had told the truth without adding a second sentence to defend herself.

Ryan was arrested from his office that same day. When the police seized his phone, it already contained a prepared list of recipients: my supervisor, Judith’s family, our mutual friends, and two coworkers with whom I had worked for years.

He thought that with blackmail he would make everyone kneel.

But he had kept his own words against himself.

Before the first hearing, Investigator Mariam played the recording for Ryan. There were only four of us in the small room: me, Judith, Ryan, and his lawyer.

“If I show this part to your husband, what will he say?” Ryan’s old voice was heard.

Ryan raised his head.

“This is taken out of context.”

The lawyer looked at him.

“You yourself say that you should be transferred the money.”

“I was just talking.”

Mariam rewound the recording.

“‘You will transfer one hundred thousand to me tomorrow morning.’ Was this a conversation or a demand?”

Ryan fell silent.

Tears were running from Judith’s eyes, but she no longer hid behind them. And I felt a strange calm. Not victory. Simply the feeling that no one in the room was any longer saying that I had invented everything.

Ryan’s lawyer finally closed the folder.

“My client intends to cooperate,” he said.

“Yesterday you said the video was fake,” I reminded him.

The lawyer looked away.

Ryan lost control for the first time.

“Gary, this should not end like this.”

“I did not start this.”

“You will lose everything too.”

“I have already lost what was no longer mine.”

Judith tensed. I knew that those words also concerned her.

The divorce process lasted several months. A case was opened against Ryan for blackmail and the illegal use of a private recording. He was sentenced in court, but I did not stay in the courtroom long that day. I did not want his downfall to become the main event of my life.

Judith left the house. Our joint accounts were divided. Among her things only one thing remained — the small wooden board attached to the kitchen wall, where years earlier we had marked the dates of our travels.

I took that down too.

In the first weeks the calls did not stop. Judith’s mother spoke to me calmly. Maggie asked whether I was eating. Clary came once and stood at the door for a long time.

“I thought you were being too harsh,” she told me.

“What do you think now?”

“I think you only locked the door after she had already left the house.”

I answered nothing.

Once Judith’s lawyer called me.

“She wants to speak with you in person.”

“No.”

“Maybe it is the last opportunity.”

“She had the last opportunity when she carried the suitcase through the door.”

That evening I entered the house alone. The bedroom was almost empty. On the top shelf of the wardrobe she had left one photograph — our wedding day. I did not take the photograph. I only looked at it and left it there again.

The next morning the empty room looked different to me. Earlier that emptiness had hurt me, but now it resembled a place to breathe.

Three months passed.

I took on a new project at work and rented a small apartment on the other side of the city. From the window I could see the tram line in the morning. Every morning I brewed coffee, no longer burned the bread, and walked ten minutes to work.

Maggie’s little daughter, Liza, came to me on Sundays. One cold morning she was drawing on the floor with colored pencils.

“What is this?” I asked.

“A house,” she answered.

“Why does it have two doors?”

Liza lowered her head.

“One is for old people. The other is for those who should return home.”

The child’s words struck me as no testimony in court had been able to.

The first snow came in December. I stood on the balcony and watched the white layer cover the noise of the street.

At that moment I received a message from Judith.

“I no longer ask you to forget everything. Only give me one chance to explain what I was like then.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“You have already given me your explanation. Now I choose how to live.”

And I blocked the number again.

In the evening I attached Liza’s drawing to the refrigerator. Then I put the keys on the table. In my hand I still held the little copper compass, left by my father, with two scratches and a worn needle.

I thought for a long time about why I had kept it for so long.

Then I understood.

The compass does not tell me the way.

It only reminds me that returning does not always mean going back.

And for the first time, after many years, the needle stood still peacefully.

Missed the beginning?
