When my wife went home with her ex-husband, I changed the locks — the fear that appeared on her face froze me

That night my wife returned from her former husband’s house, but she could no longer open our door. I stood in the living room, watching the camera screen and turning in my hand the copper compass-shaped pendant left by my father. There were two scratches on its surface — beside my initials. This little thing always reminded me where I was supposed to return. That evening, for the first time, I thought that a home might no longer be a direction.

Judith stood at the door and pulled the handle with both hands.

“Gary, open up. This is ridiculous.”

I picked up the phone and answered:

“You left on your own.”

“I left only for one night.”

“To Ryan’s house.”

Her face looked pale on the screen. Raindrops were in her hair, and a black suitcase lay by her feet. Three hours earlier, the same suitcase had stood in our bedroom, while Judith sprayed perfume in front of the mirror.

Ryan’s name first appeared in our home a month earlier. I was chopping onions in the kitchen when Judith said it as if she were reading the weather forecast:

“Ryan’s agency is helping with the product launch.”

The knife froze on the board.

“Which Ryan?”

She did not even look at me.

“My ex-husband. Don’t start.”

Tomato sauce was bubbling in the pot. The smell of garlic filled the air, but I heard only the metallic sound of the spoon.

“I haven’t started anything yet.”

“Then don’t look as if I committed a crime.”

After that, Ryan became a message with morning coffee, a quiet laugh on the sofa, and a name lit up after midnight. Judith put her phone down with the screen facing downward. When I asked why he was writing so late, she laughed.

“Are you becoming jealous, Gary?”

“I just want the truth.”

“Marriage needs air.”

I stayed silent. Sometimes a person disguises their own dignity as patience.

On Thursday, at half past nine in the evening, we were washing dishes. Her wedding ring glittered beneath the sink light.

“I’m going to Ryan’s lakeside house for the weekend,” she told me.

“We?”

“Me and the work team.”

“To Ryan’s house?”

Judith sighed.

“We’ll all be there. We’re adults.”

I turned off the water and slowly dried my hands.

“If you go, don’t come back.”

The smile stopped on her face for several seconds.

“Are you serious?”

“For the first time.”

In the morning she packed a suitcase. She accidentally struck the pendant hanging beside the door, and the little compass needle hit the wall. I still remember the sound.

“You’ll get over it by Sunday,” she told me and kissed me on the cheek.

The car left. I changed the lock, packed her things into boxes, and sent them to Maggie. I called a lawyer.

“I want a divorce,” I said.

Judith did not return on Sunday. On Saturday, after midnight, a voice message from her appeared on my phone.

“Gary, please, listen to me. You were right about Ryan. He recorded something. I didn’t know until morning came…”

…her voice could be heard trembling through the phone.

“He told me he only wanted to talk. He took me to the lake. I drank, but I did not lose consciousness. When I tried to leave, he showed me the recording. He said he would send it to everyone and say that I had gone there myself.”

Outside, Judith stood at the door. Through the window I saw how she wrapped her arms around her body.

“Why didn’t you tell me immediately?” I asked.

“I was afraid.”

“But you weren’t afraid before, when you went to his house against me?”

She was silent for a long time.

“I know I did wrong. But now I need help.”

For the first time there was real fear in her words, but together with it an old habit returned: Judith cried, and I was supposed to put aside my own pain and save her.

In the bedroom I looked at the empty hanger. Her coat had hung there before. I took the compass pendant in my hand and wrote to her:

“You made your choice. Now stay with its consequences.”

Then I blocked her number.

In the morning Maggie wrote to me that Judith was devastated. Then Clary blamed me: “Don’t destroy a marriage over one bad weekend.” No one mentioned the months that had brought me to this day.

On Monday I went to the lawyer. I signed the divorce papers and thought everything was over. But in the evening he told me only one sentence:

!!!  Part 4 — After seven years of marriage, my wife told me I had no rights over her body — her face suddenly changed at my response

“Evidence against Ryan already exists, although the recording is not the only problem…”

…I returned to the lawyer’s office again. It was Wednesday, six in the evening. Rain slid down the windows, and a black folder lay on the table. The lawyer David locked the door and turned on the computer.

Judith sat opposite me. She intertwined her fingers so tightly that her fingernails turned pale.

“Before you see this, I’ll tell you once again,” she said, “going to Ryan was my decision. I am not innocent.”

“I already know that.”

“But what he did afterward was not my choice.”

David played a video on the screen. The image showed the living room of the lakeside house. The camera angle was high, beside the fireplace. Judith sat on the sofa, and Ryan stood in front of her. The audio was quiet at first, then his voice was heard clearly.

“You came back to me yourself, Judith. Now don’t play the saint.”

“I told you I wanted to talk, not this.”

“If I show this part to your husband, what will he say?”

Ryan raised his phone toward the camera. Another recording was already visible there — edited, confusing, one in which Judith’s words had been cut off and worked against her.

Judith covered her mouth with her hand.

“Oh God…”

In the video Ryan moved closer.

“You will transfer one hundred thousand to me tomorrow morning. If not, I will send it to everyone. Your husband first.”

“I don’t have the money.”

“Then Gary’s life will cost you.”

I watched the screen, and two things fought inside me at once: anger at Judith, who had chosen to go there, and disgust at Ryan, who had turned her fear into a weapon.

David stopped the video.

“This file was found in Ryan’s cloud storage,” he said. “His former technical partner sent it to us. He also has bank-transfer statements and messages.”

Judith raised her head.

“Can you give this to the police?”

“We already have,” David answered.

At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

!!!  Nine Years Later, My Ex-Wife Summoned Me by Letter, but When the Door of Her House Opened, I Froze on the Spot

“Gary?” Ryan’s voice sounded. “Now you know what kind of wife you have. If you want all this to remain quiet, prepare the money tomorrow morning.”

“You recorded the threat yourself,” I said.

“Everyone understands evidence differently.”

The call ended. Silence fell over the room.

David went to the window and pulled back the curtain. Across the street stood a black car. Someone was sitting inside it and watching our office.

“He is here,” Judith said.

David called the police, but the car immediately drove away. A few seconds later my phone lit up again. This time the message was not from Ryan, but from my company director: “Gary, contact me urgently. We received a video in which your family matter is mentioned…”

Judith saw my face and asked quietly:

“Has he already spread it?”

I looked at the message. I still did not know what Ryan had prepared for me, but I knew one thing: his biggest lie had now reached my workplace…
