My Husband Stood Triumphantly Beside His Mistress, but When I Entered the Hall, the Smile Disappeared from His Face

At the very moment when Ryan kissed his mistress in front of four hundred influential guests, I was standing in the hotel elevator and preparing for the final blow.

In the banquet hall of Manhattan’s most expensive hotel, crystal chandeliers were shining, while the cameras were directed at Ryan Caldwell and Vanessa Mercer. Vanessa was wearing a scarlet dress, and Ryan had the kind of smile as if the whole city had become his property.

“To new beginnings!” he announced and raised his glass.

The guests applauded.

Then he pulled Vanessa toward him by the waist and kissed her.

Not quietly. Not secretly. In front of everyone.

I knew he would do it. But I still felt such coldness in my chest, as if winter had entered my body. Eleven weeks earlier, my marriage to Ryan had already ended. The divorce decree had come into force, while Ryan had no idea that the signed papers he had signed without looking were precisely what it meant.

He thought I was hiding at home, had drawn the curtains, and was crying because of his betrayal.

Ryan had always loved that Isabella who silently endured everything.

But tonight I was a different woman.

In my room, at seven in the evening, I put on a platinum-colored silk dress. The city lights were visible from the window. On the dressing table lay the only thing I had never left far from home—a small black-enamel medallion, inside which was a golden compass drawn by my father’s hand.

He gave it to me when I was twelve.

“When you lose your way, do not look for north, Isabella,” he told me then. “Remember who you are.”

Ryan had never noticed this medallion. He was interested only in expensive things, not their meaning.

There were three quick knocks and one slow knock on the door.

I stopped.

“Come in, Mateo.”

Mateo entered the room. Gray hair had begun to appear at his temples, but his gaze was still as calm as I remembered it from childhood.

“The car is ready,” he told me.

“Is Father already downstairs?”

After a short pause, Mateo nodded.

“He did not come alone. Luca DeSantis is with him too.”

My heart clenched hard once.

Everyone in Manhattan knew the name Luca DeSantis. Newspapers called him a billionaire investor. Bankers called him a man who could complete impossible deals. Beside my father, he was always something else: the family’s loyal protector and a man who never entered a room by accident.

“Will everything end today?” I asked.

“No,” Mateo answered me. “Today everyone will see how it began.”

A black car was waiting in front of the hotel. Father was sitting in the back seat. Vittorio Bellini was already elderly, but when sitting beside him, rooms seemed to become narrower.

“Are you ready?” he asked me.

“I have been ready for eleven weeks.”

He looked at the medallion and smiled at me for the first time that evening.

“Then do not allow anyone to turn you back into a little girl again.”

When we entered the hall, Ryan was kissing Vanessa at that very moment. The applause suddenly stopped. First one conversation fell silent, then another. Within a few seconds, a heavy silence fell over the entire hall.

Luca stepped forward.

Ryan slowly turned around. First he saw Luca, then my father, and finally—me.

Vanessa immediately moved away.

“Isabella?” Ryan murmured.

I heard his voice for the first time as it truly was—frightened and empty.

I walked toward him.

“Don’t trouble yourself, Ryan. Today I will no longer give you a private conversation.”

“This is not what you think.”

“We have four hundred witnesses. I think it is exactly what everyone saw.”

He held out his hand to me, as if I still represented his property.

I took a folded document out of my bag.

The clicking of cameras sounded in the hall. Ryan’s gaze fell on the paper, while Luca signaled with his eyes to the lawyers standing behind him.

Ryan slowly reached his hand toward the document, but before his fingers touched the sheet, the hall door opened and two people carrying black folders entered…

Ryan’s fingers touched the document, but he immediately pulled back, as if the paper could burn him.

“What is this?” he asked.

I unfolded the divorce decree.

“The end of our marriage.”

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

“You told me you still had a wife,” she said to Ryan.

“Shut up, Vanessa.”

“It ended eleven weeks ago,” I continued. “Everything was delivered to your lawyer. And you signed that authorization without even reading it.”

Ryan snatched the document from me. His eyes quickly ran over the first page, then the signature, and finally the seal.

“This is impossible. My consent was required for the divorce.”

“Your lawyer’s consent was enough, because you yourself gave him that authority.”

Someone whispered quietly in the hall. Behind me, the medallion touched the fabric of my dress and lightly tapped against it with every movement. That little sound calmed me.

Ryan leaned toward me.

“Let’s go home. Now.”

“I no longer live in your house.”

“It is our house.”

“No. It was part of the marital property. The lawyers will deliver your things tomorrow.”

Anger appeared in his eyes.

“You planned this in advance.”

“No, Ryan. I simply stopped covering up your mistakes a long time ago.”

At that moment Luca DeSantis approached the stage. The heel of his shoe sounded sharply on the marble floor. Every director turned his head toward him.

“Ryan,” he said, “this afternoon the company’s board of directors called an emergency meeting.”

Ryan laughed, but no sound followed the laughter.

“What does this have to do with anything?”

“It has to do with the fact that the board members discovered discrepancies in the financial reports.”

“My accounts have been fully audited.”

“The old accounts,” Luca corrected him. “Not the transfers made during the last eight months.”

Ryan turned toward me.

“You did this.”

“I only did what you never did—I read the documents to the end.”

At that moment my father took one step forward. There was neither anger nor threat in his voice, but the hall became so silent as if everyone already knew that his words would be heavy.

“You loved my daughter only as long as her power was invisible to you.”

Ryan looked at him for the first time as if he were seeing a stranger he had known for a long time.

“Who are you in all this, anyway?”

My father did not answer. Luca did.

“Vittorio Bellini is the founder and principal owner of the Bellini Industrial Group. He owns the investment fund that financed your company’s first expansion.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“No. This cannot be.”

Vanessa looked at me in confusion.

“Isabella, you told me your father was simply an old businessman.”

“I told you nothing, Vanessa. You invented my life yourself based on what Ryan showed you.”

The lawyers with the black folders reached the stage. One of them whispered something into Luca’s ear. Luca nodded and looked at Ryan.

“There is one more thing you need to know. This evening the board is not only considering your position. It is also considering ownership of the shares that allowed your company to survive until now.”

“They are mine,” Ryan said.

“That is what you thought,” Luca replied.

I took the black-enamel medallion out of my bag and closed my fingers around it. On its back was a small lock that only Father and I knew about.

“Ryan,” I said calmly, “you always asked me why people stood up when they saw my father.”

“I never asked you that.”

“That was precisely your problem.”

Father looked at Luca.

“It is time for him to learn everything.”

Luca signaled to one of the lawyers. He opened the folder, but had not yet touched the document.

At that moment my phone exhaled. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Mrs. Bellini?” said a man’s tense voice. “If you do not stop right now, your former husband will not remain alive…”

Heavy breathing sounded on the other end of the call, and then the line went dead.

For several seconds after the call ended, I could not move. Music was still playing in the hall, but the sound came from far away, as if I were standing under water.

Father noticed me immediately.

“Who was it?”

“He threatened me. He said Ryan might not remain alive.”

Ryan heard everything. The anger disappeared from his face, and real fear appeared in its place.

“I did not give anyone any orders,” he said.

“I have not accused anyone yet,” I answered.

Luca signaled to security to lock the doors. Several guests moved aside. Vanessa was trembling and gripped the strap of her scarlet dress with her fingers so tightly that her nails turned white.

“Open the document,” Father said.

The lawyer placed the black folder on the table and took out three sheets. The first was my marriage agreement. The second was the record of share ownership. The third document had a red seal.

“A family trust created in the name of Isabella Bellini,” the lawyer read. “Its owner is the entire package with which Caldwell’s company has operated for the last ten years.”

Ryan shook his head.

“My father gave me these shares.”

“No,” Father said. “I gave them to my daughter. You had the right to manage them only because you were her husband.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the hall.

Ryan came toward me.

“You knew?”

“I learned everything several years ago.”

“And you still stayed with me?”

“Because I believed that one day you would at least ask who I was. But you only asked how much you would receive.”

Luca raised the second sheet.

“Here are the audit results. Ryan used the company’s money to cover his own debts, and then moved these funds through fake consulting contracts. Part of the money was spent on Vanessa’s apartment and jewelry.”

Vanessa looked at Ryan.

“You told me all of this was your money.”

“You took it too, didn’t you?” he shouted at her.

“I did not know it was stolen!”

The lawyer placed the third sheet in front of me. It stated that the right to manage the company was immediately transferred to me until the investigation was completed.

Ryan’s hands trembled.

“You took my company away from me.”

“No. I took back what never belonged to you.”

Father nodded to Luca. He turned on a small recorder. Ryan’s own voice rang through the hall—several months old, but clear.

“Isabella will not check anything. If I put the document in front of her, she will sign it. She thinks I control everything.”

Then Vanessa’s voice sounded.

“And if she finds out?”

Ryan’s answer rang through the hall like a knife.

“She is too weak to do anything.”

The recording stopped.

Ryan froze. For the first time, he heard his own words as others heard them.

Vanessa hid her face in her hands. One of the directors lowered his head. My father only looked at me.

“Now do you know why I did not warn him?” I asked Ryan. “Because his greatest punishment was always his own certainty.”

Luca’s phone rang. He listened, then shifted his gaze toward me.

“The police found a car that had been watching your house for three days. They found documents and a weapon in the car.”

Ryan stepped back.

“I know nothing about this.”

At that moment two investigators appeared at the entrance to the hall. They were holding a court authorization.

But they did not go toward Ryan.

They reached me, and one of them quietly said:

“Mrs. Bellini, an old case connected to your father has been reopened. Someone has stated that you arranged this entire plan for revenge.”

For the first time, Father’s face changed.

“Who filed the complaint?” I asked.

The investigator looked at Ryan.

“A person who claims that he himself is Vittorio Bellini’s true heir…”

And precisely then I received a new message on my phone. It contained only one photograph—the door of my childhood home, with the same black medallion that I was holding in my hand…
