Part 4 — My Husband Stood Triumphantly Beside His Mistress, but When I Entered the Hall, the Smile Disappeared from His Face

The moment I looked at the photograph, I understood that this was no longer merely a threat.

The picture showed my childhood home, but a medallion was hanging on the door—the one I was holding in my hand.

“This is impossible,” I said.

Father took the phone from me. For the first time I saw his fingers trembling.

“This photograph was taken now,” Luca said. “The paint on the door is fresh.”

Ryan stepped back.

“I did not send anyone to this house.”

“They were sent in your name,” Luca replied. “And that is precisely why you must come with us.”

“Where?”

“To a secure place.”

Ryan shook his head.

“I am not going anywhere.”

Father looked at him calmly.

“For the first time in your life, you are no longer the one who decides.”

Outside, police cars were already standing. The guests were leaving in groups; some were talking on the phone, some were stealing glances toward us. A few hours earlier Ryan had been a successful businessman to them. Now everyone pronounced his name in a whisper.

Vanessa was standing by the door.

“Ryan,” she told him, “I will call a lawyer.”

“My lawyer.”

“No. Mine.”

It was as if Ryan had been slapped in the face.

“You are leaving me too?”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“You never had anyone who stood beside you. You only had people who stood in your shadow.”

Then she left.

I was not happy about her leaving. Victory that night was neither applause nor someone else’s humiliation. Victory was that no one asked me anymore to protect someone else’s lie.

The investigators took Ryan to a separate room. He called his lawyer several times, but received no answer. Finally the lawyer called him himself.

“Tell me that you will fix this,” Ryan said.

I could hear his voice from the other side of the hall.

“Mr. Caldwell, I can no longer continue with your case.”

“What do you mean, you can no longer continue?”

“It means that I signed a refusal of representation for you. You hid the accounts and court documents from me.”

“I paid you!”

“And you paid me to be a man, not to get your lies out of prison.”

The call ended.

Ryan stood silently for several seconds. Then Luca turned on the recorder once more.

“She is too weak to do anything.”

Ryan heard his own voice.

This time he did not get angry. He simply sat down.

He hid his face in his hands.

“I did not say it like that,” he whispered.

“You did,” I answered.

“You took it out of context.”

“No. You tore yourself out of everything that resembled humanity.”

The next morning I went home, where I had lived with Ryan for four years. His monogrammed suitcase stood in the hallway. In the bedroom, half of the wardrobe was empty. On my table, only one thing remained—the small black-enamel medallion that had accidentally fallen from me that evening.

I found it on the floor.

The lock was open. Inside, the golden compass was still pointing north.

That same day Ryan learned from the news that his position had been suspended, his accounts frozen, and a financial investigation had begun against him. The court issued a temporary restraining order that prohibited him from approaching me or my father.

He had created all of this himself.

I only opened the door and showed everyone what stood behind it.

Three weeks later, it was my first working day in the Bellini Foundation building. The building was made of old brick, and in the morning there was a smell of coffee and paper. My surname was written on the wall there, but for the first time in my life I did not feel this surname as a burden.

Luca brought me the documents.

“You can sell everything and go far away,” he told me.

“I do not want to run away.”

“Then what will you do?”

I looked at the city from the window.

“With that money I will create legal assistance for women. For those who can leave, but do not know how.”

Luca smiled at me.

“Your father will like it.”

“Father will like that I finally made my own decision.”

Father came to my office that evening. He was holding a small box.

“Another medallion?” I asked.

“No. Its key.”

There was a small copper key in the box. He explained to me that it opened a room hidden in the wall of my childhood home. The family history, all important records, and my mother’s letters were kept there.

“Why did you not show me this earlier?” I asked.

“Because I thought you still wanted to protect your old life.”

“I do not want to anymore.”

“I know.”

Two months later, the first snow came. My little nephew, Niko, and I were standing in the foundation’s yard. He was holding pencils and drawing a house on paper.

“Where is this?” I asked.

“Our new house.”

“Why does the door have two locks?”

Niko shrugged.

“One is so bad people cannot come in. The other is so good people can always come in.”

His answer touched my heart so deeply that I smiled.

That night I received a letter from Ryan. Not through a lawyer, but handwritten.

“Isabella, I know you do not intend to return to me. But I want you to listen to me at least once. I cannot come to terms with losing you.”

At the end of the letter it said: “Could we simply have coffee?”

I looked at the paper for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“Ryan, you did not notice losing me when I stood beside you. Now I have no reason to look back. I wish you to find peace with yourself, but I will no longer be on this road.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Me humillaron durante una inspección nocturna y cerraron todas las salidas, pero cuando sonreí, Garrett dejó de respirar

I put the paper into an envelope and sent it to the lawyer.

Father was standing by the window.

“Was it difficult?” he asked me.

“No.”

“Really?”

I closed my fingers around the medallion. The black enamel was warm, while the golden compass reflected the light.

“Leaving him was difficult. Refusing to return was peace.”

That night I returned home alone. Instead of the old apartment, I had a small, bright house by the river. In the kitchen, the kettle was giving off steam. Niko’s drawing lay on the desk. And the small copper key was hanging on the door.

I placed the medallion beside the key.

For years I thought it showed me north.

Now I understood that it was not showing me the way at all.

It was simply reminding me that the way was mine.

And this time, for the first time, I chose the direction myself.

Missed the beginning?
